Subject: Scripture Memorization
From: Stephen Simpson

Greetings,

I have been trying to put together some information on the topic of 'the
things which keep us from actually memorizing scripture'. Most people I
have talked to about scripture memorization have agreed that it is an
interesting, profitable and important thing to do. But most people do
not actually do much of it when you get right down to it. I myself have
a releativly poor track record. Consistency is very difficult for some
reason.

Here are some questions to consider:

1) What keeps/distracts you from meeting your scripture memory goals?
2) How have you overcome?
3) Why do people in general resist developing the habit of memorizing?
4) How can we overcome objections and encourage others to memorize?

1. Memorization involves a great deal of time. The unaltered truth is, it
is boring to continue repeating the same words over and over, but that is
what must be done in order to accomplish our goal. Also, there is little
or
no recognition for a job well done. It is hard work.

2. I haven't overcome - It is a continuous struggle to do what is right
just because it is right!

3. Let's relate this to being in school. Most of us found memorization
and
study difficult. However, there were natural built in incentives. If we
didn't learn certain things, we were considered "dumb" and put down by
classmates. We faced the prospect of bad grades, in turn bringing the
disapproval of teachers and parents, and usually some kind of disciplinary
measures. As adults, we still have the problem of memorization being
unpleasant, but we have no outward incentive to keep at it, and usually no
encouragement from those around us unless we happen to be in some type of
classroom situation.

4. By doing just what we are doing with this Bible Memory List. I am a
part of the James Memory Group. I started a little late, and I have not
kept up, but the encouraging notes from Lorry, the discussions, and the
reminders to keep at it, are just what I need to get me going again. I
know
I am way behind, but that isn't what really matters. Progress is what I am
aiming for, and I can say that I know more scripture now than I did when I
started, so I consider that to be progress, even if it is coming slowly

Linda.

Thanks for the email. I have just gotten back to memorizing (I too have a
hard time keeping consistent). I decided to make it one of my weekly goals
with my accountability partner. I have memorized Ephesians 1:3-8 in the
last three weeks. It has been hard to retain, but I am realizing more and
more that until a passage really means something to you personally, it is
harder to just memorize verses for the sake of memorizing. Thanks for the
questions to ponder. I hope I can stay on track this time. I use a
tickler
file to keep my verses organized for review.

In support of the truth you speak of Stephen, I did a Poll for 3 weeks at
www.memlok.com about a year ago.

People answered the question, how many verses can you say with reference,
1-10, 11-20, 21-50, 51+

75% of those choosing to reply said less than 10. About 1000 answered.

This was from people looking for memory help.

Very good point! Especially today, we have to make very hard choices with
our time. Some time for memorization and review IS one of the higher
priorities. We just have to make that choice to take some time. How much
time is the only question that needs consideration. :)

Drake Mariani writes regarding people being able to say memory verses that
"75% of those choosing to reply said less than 10. About 1000 answered."
I
find this so true even in the churches. I go about encouraging churches to
teach their members to memorize. You would be surprized, perhaps, to know,
that many Christians can't recite the Lord's Prayer of the Twenty Third
Psalm. Even the Sunday School teachers many times haven't memorized key
scriptures. I think it is necessary for us as christians to memorize
scripture so we can be good teachers ourselves. If we encourage others to
memorize scripture, they will be good teachers too. It is not wasted time
because God always uses his word when we know it.

I would like the "Do not worry" scripture references, please.

I also memorize just before going to bed. Then I turn out the light and
try
to recite back until I fall asleep. Many times, though, I find myself
stumped and must turn the light back on and check the scripture again.
That's usually enough to help me remember the troubling spot. Just have
two
more paragraphs before completing James. It also helps to review in the
morning after having memorized at night.

Has anyone found a memorization program for the Palm Pilot that you know
of?

I find I must consciously (willfully) make it a point to memorize and
review
Scripture on a consistent and systematic basis. This means I set goals on
what I will memorize, then organize and plan it. Now I'm busy with a
full-time job, family commitments (4 children and assistant Scout leader),
as well as Sunday school teacher and other volunteer ministry work during
the week. But I still find time to memorize Scripture, especially during
"filler time" or what someone else has called "wasted time." I carry with
me
a set of 3x5 index cards where I have written out or computer printed
specific Scripture passages. On the reverse side I have a key word and
Scripture reference that will "trigger" my recall. At the bottom of the
printed side I write down every day (month-day) I recall the Scripture
reference.

> 3) Why do people in general resist developing the habit of memorizing?
>

Its hard work with little perceived reward. Our American society is so
dominated by media images and symbols that memorization is minimized to the
extreme. Statistics show only 11-18% of Christians read the Bible on a
daily
basis. Far fewer Christians today - probably fewer than 5% - are interested
in Scripture memory, and even fewer get around to actually doing it. I did
some research into Scripture memorization in past Church history and found
some amazing things. In the 1800s, a good portion of African-American
preachers memorized large sections of Scripture from which they would
preach
to their mostly illiterate flocks. Zwingli, a famous reformer who also
worked full-time as a pastor, acquired the newly-printed Greek New
Testament
and memorized all of Paul's epistles. People of the past were far more
receptive to viewing Scripture memory as a very positive pursuit.

> 4) How can we overcome objections and encourage others to memorize?
>

Perhaps first by showing people have successfully memorized in the past,
especially ordinary people. Second, we can teach people how to focus longer
than a 20-30 second span - the average length of a commercial. Along with
that we can teach people to deliberately "turn off" from the media even for
a brief period of time to focus on personal goals. Also, I would start
simple and build up. Psalm 117 is only 2 verses, but it counts as
"memorizing a Psalm." I would also encourage people to first get the "gist"
of a verse or passage and not necessarily strive word-for-word. The
understanding is more important, and the word-for-word will eventually come
with continued practice.Personally I am convinced that everyone, even
children, has the capacity for memorizing Scriptures.

Subject: Input requested on new software!
From: "Stephen Simpson"

Greetings,

I am now putting the finishing touches on a computer program to assist
people to memorize scripture. In 1997 I put a DOS program on my web site
and
since then it has been downloaded about 12,000 times. However it is time to
do an update to Windows. I have been working on the update now for 2
years.

In short, it is a combination teaching/drilling tool. I figure that it will
be first made available in the early summer.

One of its features uses Microsoft's Agent Technology (text to speech) to
read the verses to you. The idea is that it will read a phrase, leave a
pause and read the phrase again leaving another pause. You repeat the
verse
during the pause. This dialog could be recorded on a tape and played back
in the car. I find it effective.

The program also has a series of drills / games which help you learn the
verse and evaluate your progress. The evaluation helps the comptuer decide
which verses most need review and which do not need review.

Of course it also prints verse cards in a couple of sizes.

The program has many other options, but I am only trying to give an
overview
to say that I am trying to create a software package that lives up to the
name 'Scripture Memory System'

I guess that the target age group is adults and young adults, but I am
trying to make it usable by younger children as well.

It is a teaching tool because it includes several tutorials on
memorization,
(how and why) as well as as many scripture memory tips as I could put
together, etc.

The program will be freeware.

At this point I would like to make a general request of anyone who is
interested. I have a few questions:

1) What features/games/functions would you like to see in a computer
program, if you were to use it?

2) I am also looking for lists of verses which could be included in the
help
files of the program to help new memorizers get started. Contributions of
any verse lists or groups of verses by topic would be of great help.

One of the clubs you looked at is probably the one I started a year ago in

The only message posted is my scripture memorization log, which I have been
faithful to keep up since the Lord told me a year ago that He desired that
I
should make a lifetime commitment to Scripture memorization. I thank God
that, by His grace, I have been able to be faithful in this area where I
never had been able to before. Depending on His strength and motivation, I
intend to continue until the day I die or am rapture, and possibly even
beyond that! The name of my club is:

I have been hoping for a whole year now that someone with better ideas and
creativity than I have would join a give some real input. I'll probably
join yours, but I'm still going to keep mine as well. I use it as kind of
a
log of my assignments and achievements.

I just finished Romans 7 and am starting on either Ephesians 1 or
Colossians
1 (probably Ephesians 1) - they're both precious passages which I love.

God bless you!

Subject: Introducing Myself
From: "biblet"

My name is Todd Beach. I know that Stephen Simpson has brought up my name
in past emails,
so I won't give you the long introduction.

I am married with 3 kids and live in Tuscaloosa, AL, USA. My wife and I
homeschool our 2 oldest
kids. We moved to the South from Pittsburgh, PA 3 years ago. I work as an
engineer/software
devloper for a manufacturing firm.

I, like Stephen, have spent the last two years developing Bible
memorization software in my spare
time. It is called Bible Memory 2000. If you want a description, go to:

http://home.istar.ca/~ssimpson/smlinks.htm#Software

The full version of the software allows you to look up and search Bible
passages from the NIV,
KJV and ASV. When you play the Bible memorization games, your progress is
monitored by a
Report Card feature. Here is the interesting part - you can upload your
Report Card information to
the web. The advantage is two-fold:

1. You can compete against others in your country, state or province.
2. You can choose email accountability partners who will receive an email
link to a web page where your accountability information is displayed.

I have read some of the prior list messages and a common theme is that
Bible memorization is
sometimes boring. Perhaps my software can help spice up your memorization
process.

The software is not an end-all-be-all cure for Bible memorization. I

From: "James Kephart"

Dear Steve,
You asked us some questions on April 3. Sorry I am so slow, but I
will give you my input. By the way, this memorization club is great and I
appreciate you running it. In fact I appreciate the hard work you do in
this
area. Your work is right on, and I refer everyone to your site. For what
it is worth, here is my input, rambling and there is more I could say, but
use what you can.
Blessings!
James L. Kephart

> 1) What keeps/distracts you from meeting your scripture memory goals?
Being busy all the time is what keeps me from my goals. I have
been a scripture memorizer since 1952, however and I have learned to keep
my
memorization work with me, so that I can do the work in the car, and at
times when I have to wait. I did all of Navigators stuff at the start. I
believe that we will be stronger and resist sin if we put scripture in our
hearts, so I have a good motive to keep memorizing. After all, Jesus used
scripture when tempted and Psa 119 says "Thy word have I hid in my heart
that I might not sin against thee.

> 2) How have you overcome?
I overcome by keeping my work with me. I overcome by taking a
partner and spending only 30 min to an hr a week with them memorizing.
That
is enough to keep us both on target. I overcome by going over my memory
work as I go to sleep. This puts me to be with God's word in my heart.
Really blesses me.

> 3) Why do people in general resist developing the habit of memorizing?
People are lazy. Me included. We don't want to put out effort. We
want life to be easy. Some people talk themselves into thinking that they
can't do it. If I get 30 min with them, I can show them how. Right now I
have a group of senior citizens who are loving to memorize. They thought
they couldn't do it, but they can and they have joy. I like to teach
people
to memorize by topic. Our Three Thirty Club is topical. For instance when
they learn our 11th Meditation they have learned about what the Bible says
about worry and have the verses all together. The First Meditation covers
the Creation and the Fall of Man. In college we memorized chapters of the
Bible. My O.T. professor required it. That isn't bad, but I like topical
better and I think it keeps peoples interest better.

> 4) How can we overcome objections and encourage others to memorize?
It is really difficult if you are a pastor to get people to
memorize. Many just refuse. But when I am teaching Sunday School or Bible
Study, I require it. We take 10 minutes at the beginning and learn a
verse.
I do it by having them read it aloud five times, then I ask who would like
to be the first to repeat it. When they do it perfect we clap and marvel
at
our good memorys that God gave us. Give me 10 minutes and a class of 10
people, and all will say the verse in that length of time. I also preach a
lot about scripture memorization. I explain that the biggest problem we
Christians have is falling into sin, the snares of the Devil. I explain
that scripture in our hearts will keep us from falling. I stress the
blessings of having God's word in our hearts. Blessings such as peace of
mind etc. I also stress that God's word does not go out void, and that if
we learn it, God is going to use it to help or bless someone else. I am a
better preacher because I can quote a lot of scripture. You will be a
better witness if you can quote scripture. The cults prey upon people who
don't know God's word. Just like Satan will prey on us if we don't know
it.
I stress how marvelous the human mind is. It never runs out of memory like
our computors. But in our fast food society, filled with fast food
churches
and fast food christians, their first reaction is "I don't like to
memorize." It takes a selling job most of the time. But Christians
should
be experts on the scripture. We can't be experts on everything, but we can
be experts on the scripture. Scripture has power to change lives. It is
sharper than a two edged sword. We must do all we can to make our people
experts.

Dear Jim,

I came across this memorization site a few months ago and I am very
interested. But since then the only thing that I have done is to read this
exchange of messages. When I read your letter I was encouraged by what you
shared. Thank you for your insights and encouragement.

Hi, John! I'm not running the group, but have been on this list a long
time. Scripture memory has done so much for my life and ministry, and I've
worked at encouraging others in this area for many years. And have been
praying more might be done on the Internet. Well, it's obvious God has been
answering that prayer! LOL

We are missionaries in Irian Jaya, Indonesia. Pray for us, and the
ministry to jungle tribes here as you are reminded of this area. (Or if you
happen to be interested, we'll send you regular email news and prayer
requests.)

God bless!

Thank you in the name of Jesus.
Yes I would love to hear of the wonderful work our Lord and Savior is doing
through your obedient efforts.
Do you have a good disciplined approach to scripture memorization?
I am new to bible memorization and quite honestly I am having a hard time
developing a productive start or should I say I don't know where to start.
I love God's Word and am faithful to daily bible study.
My heart's desire is to fill my mind and heart so full of His Word that I
can be of great service to our coming King.
I witness daily and want to be more effective in that witness.
I believe the more of God's Word that we bury in our hearts the brighter
the
light of our witness.
May the peace of Jesus live in your home and may his healing power be
evidenced in your ministry.
I will pray that many are saved through the blood He has applied to your
ministry.

Greetings in the Name above all other names Jesus.
He's alive and the tomb is still empty and my heart is full of His
presence!!!
I am new to bible memorization also.
I am very excited because I can receive encouragement and motivation
through
God's children like you.
His Spirit is so wonderful and works in so many ways.
I believe I will start my memorization efforts with love.
I am going to look up every verse in the New Testament that has the word
love, make a list and get started.
May God's peace and good health live abundantly in your life.

Do one verse at a time. When you are learning chapters or large portions
it
is better to learn one verse at a time before you start stringing things
together. Some people make the mistake of doing the first verse, then the
second then stringing them together, then going on to the third etc. The
trouble is that when they get to the end, they know the first few verses a
lot better than the last. It is better to get them all one at a time
first.
In fact, do them one at a time about 3 times before you start stringing. I
just finished the 11th Meditation on worry and anxiety from the Three
Thirty
Club http://www.threethirtyclub.com. It took me about 3 weeks in my spare
time. But I have it word perfect. I use it after my prayer as I am going
to sleep. Puts me to sleep in a very peaceful way.

To Kimberly in Oklahoma....
If you memorize scripture you will be greatly blessed. You will need all
of
God's help you can get with your children. (I had five) God's word does
not
go out void. If you store it in your heart it will be there to use as
needed. I also believe he will send people who need that word to you
especially if you have it. Our time memorizing is not wasted. God will
not
put what we do on a shelf.
Blessings!

Hi Roger,

I thank God that through this list I have come to know you and your
ministry. Yo know it is not an easy task to make people know their
true God and ministry. You know it is not an easy task to make people
know their true God and change from their wicked ways. But we manage
all things through Christ who strengthens us. You might be passing
through very difficult situations, but I pray that you have a favour
from God in your ministry.

Father God, I know your are wonderfull and great. Through your word
you made earth and heaven and all what is contained. You always hear
what your people ask and give. Thanks because you are a giver.
I pray that you help and give double anointing all those who are engaged
in spreading your word. Protect them from all the dangers that might
come across. Make them true light to the world. Bless them Lord and
make them rejoice because their names are writen in the book of life.
In the precious name of Jesus Christ I pray. Amen.

You hit the nail on the head when you said "This has renewed my
resolve and I am once again attempting to hides
God's precious word in my heart that I might not sin against Him..." That
is
why we must get the word in our young people as well. Sin hurts so many
lives. We need to be prepared to withstand the fiery darts of the Devil.
Always have your memorization on your person. You will find there are
times
in every day you can go over your work.

Dear Stephen,
I have just been reading all the dialogue between all the members of
this site, thinking that I really battle to memorize anything.
Then after reading your article on how to meditate on the Scriptuers and
asking the Lord Jesus to help I recieved a desire to memorize Isaiah 53
then it came quite easily. I started off by visuallizing and drawing
what I saw in each sentence. What a blessing because revelation about
the strength of the arm of the Lord became established in my soul. So
thankyou for what your are doing, and I can quote the first 4 verses and
I am focused on the cross the power of God. I also carry a card with the
verses on, around with me.

May God give peace to you, my Christian brothers, and love, with faith
from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. God's grace and blessing
be upon all who love our Lord Jesus Christ.
Love, Betty Foote.

To Betty Foote.....
Congratulations on your success in starting to memorize. One thing I can
tell you, is don't get uptight about it. If you will relax, it will come.
Just take a verse at a time, memorize it then move on to the next verse.
Don't worry if a day later you don't seem to remember the first verse. Get
all the chapter or section done one verse at a time before you start trying
to string the verses together. Then start over, again one verse at a time.
You will find that the second time around, the verses come much easier. By
the third time around, you will know your individual verses good enough to
start stringing them together. Many people make the mistake of doing one
verse, then two, then stringing those two and then trying for three,
stringing them. By the time they get to the end, they know the first three
verses well and the rest not so good. This you don't want. You want to
know all the passage. I hope this makes sense to you. I have personally
coached many people, and this has been the best way for large passages.
Also, if you can get someone to meet with you about 30 minutes a week to
coach you, it is very beneficial.
Blessings! Keep up the good work. God will use what memorize do to do
great things because his word doesn't go out void.

My name is Val, and I just read your comment on doing one verse at a time.
I have been memorizing and teaching memorization for many years, but I
usually do it topical, etc. I am trying to memorize Ephesians 1, and like
you said, because I have strung them together, I know the first few verses
a
whole lot better than the last few. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't
get these to come together. Now I know why. Thanks for the tip. I am a
lot slower than I used to be, but I am still trying to stick to it.

Thanks again.

I found I needed Philippians 4 verse 7 and 8 a few months ago. It has =
been so helpful to friends since as well. I can now bring it to memory =
very easily and I did it this way.
I read it several times. Then I wrote it out. I then looked at each word =
and wrote down what I thought it meant, then I looked in the dictionary =
to see what meaning the dictionary gave the word, and when I had done =
all of that my recall of those two verses was embedded in my memory and =
I have been able to help several folk with them.

I believe first we need to know who we are In Christ so I look up
everything
on "in Him" "in Whom" "of Whom" etc. & make a list of the key words , for
example: "In Him" I am; loved Jn. 3:16... Blessed Eph.1:3,10... wise
2Tim.1:7... Called 1Cor.1:2... Chosen Jn.15:16... Complete
Col.2:10...Confident 1Jn.2:28 Phil.1:5 1Jn.5:14...Free
Rom.8:2...Sanctified
1Cor.1:2...Anointed 2Cor.1:21 1Jn. 2:27... Triumphant 2Cor.2:14 Accepted
Eph.
1:6 Forgiven Eph.1:7... & so on & so on. Then when I have memorized
these
key words I go back & memorize the whole scripture(s)n of that subject.

Then we need to change our thought process, so
I look up scriptures on the mind, thoughts, memory, words & so on!

James:

Your example makes sense, but could you spell it out a little more; say we
have a Psalm that's five verses, or some example. I'm fairly good at
memorizing, but I do tend to know the first parts of what I'm memorizing
much better than the rest of it.

Also, do you recommend peg words and link associations and such (say, for
verse numbers)? Do you even recommend memorizing verse numbers for a whole
chapter or something?  (e.g., peg words like 1=tie; 2=Noah; 3=ma; 4=rye;
etc...)

Thanks,
-- Brian

My name is Ron and I like to record my voice speaking whole books of
scripture on cassette and listen at any time. This really helps me
tremendously to memorize big chunks of scripture. I am working on the book
of Hebrews now and am up to chapter 6 verse 10 in memorization. I would
encourage you as well to have someone record a book of the bible for you on
cassette (In your preferred version of course). This way you can listen at
any time and put it all to spiritual memory. Hope you continue to do well.

The Lord gave me 2 verses that I really need on fear: I John 4:18-19
