From: "James Long"

Greetings to Kate and all the new readers on the list. I tend to not read
the mail from this list every day, but rather in periodic "binge" sessions.
RnRetired (former nurse maybe? ) mentioned the missing passion from
today's Christians. I must say that I have been both a victim and a witness
to this phenomenon. I think that I hold a little insight on this matter,
but
I would like others to give feedback on this subject as well.

As a few of you know I work with university students from evangelism
through
training in ministry. My experience, and that of my fellow laborers, is
that
people with no church background tend to come to Jesus with a greater
passion and then grow spiritually (in terms of application not information)
much faster than their counterparts who have a heavy background in
Christianity. It seems that those with no background can look at verses
like
Rev. 3:20 and see the relational aspect of knowing Jesus. There is greater
understanding that the Christian life is the process of getting to know
Jesus better and walking with Him as He makes us more like Himself. Those
who are steeped in religiosity often really struggle with relating to Jesus
on a personal, intimate level. Their focus tend to be on what to do
(activities, morality, ethics) or gaining more information.

To tie this with what RnRetired said, the passion seems greater for those
who come to Jesus with no heavy background, and the cause seems to be a
clearer understand of relating to Jesus face to face. To draw an analogy to
marriage, the activities involved in marriage do not make a marriage, and
knowing facts about another person does not produce intimacy. It is
possible
to "go through the motions" of marriage, and just be coexisting with
another
person. A great marriage is one where there is great loyalty out of love
between the two participants. It is this great loyalty out of love that I
often see missing in Christians I run into every day.

Much of my early Christian years were spent struggling to "do the right
things" as a Christian.
I felt great obligation to be at church three times a week, do a daily
devotion, stand up to peer pressure, etc. When I hit college, I promptly
ditched my "code of ethics" because of the weight of the burden and I
walked
away from all things spiritual. It was a year or so later that I discovered
that what Jesus really wanted was a love relationship and personal
intimacy,
not activities. To me a relationship sounded great...

Hosea 6:6 (NASB)
For I delight in loyalty rather than sacrifice,
And in the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

Since this time I have been receiving training is introducing other to
Jesus
and helping them mature to the point where they can help others. I share
this just to give perspective on my background.

This brings me to a natural conclusion that I have shared here before: If
you do scripture memory for any reason other than to know Jesus better and
to be more intimate with Him and have better understanding of who He is,
you
are missing so much of what Scripture Memory can be, and missing a great
and
wonderful benefit of the Christian walk.

Well, I never intended to preach a sermon, or write a treatise on loving
Jesus, but alas I have spoken too much and am late for work. Any thought on
this from others?

James

Hello, my name is Kate , and I'm 15 years old. I'm currently doing a
Topical
Memorization Plan for studying scripture, but I hope to move to memorizing
large parts of Scripture. My faith means so much to me, and it's nice to
know
that I can go into my public high school with my Bible, not only in my
backpack but in my head. I hope that memorizing scripture will help me
share
my faith with my friends and make an impact in my school. For those of you
who
actually care (haha a little Bible memorization humor....haha... oh forgive
me
I'm young ;-), I currently memerize the New Living Translation. I hope to
become good friends with all of you!

Hello everyone. My name is Don Myers. I have played with scripture
memorization on my own a bit but struggle with a good methodolgy to
really make progress. I have been a chrisitan for many years and have
felt this to be a missing element in my growth. I am excited to be a
part of this group and hope to share and gain together in this exciting
challenge of placing the word deeply in my heart.

I thought about the post of desiring to memorize the New Testament.
What a great goal. I will do my best on that. But more important I
commit as the spirt leads to be contributing daily member.

Thanks to the list organizer for pulling this together. A wonderful
fresh breath of christian growth.

Thanks and looking forward to sharing with everyone.

In Christ,

Don Myers

Subject: Passion
From:

It is funny you should mention on this topic of passion, James,
because it is a topic that has been on my mind for quite awhile. When I
first become serious about Christianity, two, three years ago, I was so
worried about ethics and devotions and prayer and witnessing, I forgot
about
Jesus! Sometimes I still get caught up in worry about my friend's
salvation,
and Bible Club, and youth group, etc, etc, I forget about the love of God.
What a shame, because the yoke is light and joy is abundant. Mike
Yaconelli,
a great author, writes a lot about this topic, getting caught up in worry.
His latest book, "Dangerous Wonder", is all about Childlike faith, and it
talks about forgetting about legalism, crazy rules, and getting to know
Jesus. I would reccomend it to anyone looking for passion.

Praise the LORD,

Am I glad to find Christian with similar interest. I was about to give up
with Bible memory. I did not find any support from fellow Christians around
me. Though, we ask the children at Sunday School to remember their verses,
but as adults we do not do it. We should be examples for the children, but
we leave it behind us.

How do I retain the WORDS? The more I remember, the more time I need to

Subject: Memorizing with Children
From: Stephen Simpson

Greetings,

We have been trying something for a few weeks now that has been working
very
well. I got two small photo alblums which hold 36 pictures (3x6inch)
and
cut out some pieces of paper and wrote a selection of Bible passasges on

them. Each week or so I add another verse. I made two of these verse
books
becuase I have two children. They are 4 and 6 years old. Next I, got
two
little flashlights and a couple of sticks about 3 feet long. Each night
I
take one child and my wife takes the other one and we turn off the
lights,
climb under the covers of their beds, prop up the stick to make a tent
and
turn on the flashlights to look at our verses. They think it is great
fun
and are paying attention. Most important, they are focused long enough
to
actually memorize the verses.

Be creative, make it fun ...

We've started carrying around little "scripture cards" (actually selections
I've printed out on pieces of paper and cut up into pocket-sized pieces).
The children and I review them at the beginning of the day and,
theoretically at least, during the day when we have odd free moments. I
usually look at mine when I change diapers , It's amazing, even for
tired "older" minds how much you can absorb.

Of course, I am eating the children's dust. It's amazing how fast they can
memorize!

Blessings to all,
Vicki

Lawrence, I am glad to hear you are deciding to hang in with Scripture
Memory. I am sure it will be rewarding. I have a couple of thoughts, but no
certain fixes for your questions:

1. When at work I have had success with reviewing my latest verse when I
take a restroom break. I drink a lot of water in the summer, so my
scripture
memory improves in the summer.

2. As you memorize verses, try visualizing applications for the verses.
These mental hooks are real beneficial. Jerry Lucas is a big proponent of
visualizing funny images to remember key words, but I have been trying to
visualize application and real life experiences. The application seems more
appropriate... as that is what one goal of memory should be.

Best wishes,

James Long

That's such a true statement Joel. One thing that we need to remember is
what Paul told Timothy in 1 Tim 4:8 - Physical training is only of some
value while Godliness is of great value. In context this verse seems to be
applying to the physical disciplines (fasting could be considered one of
these as could memory). It is important that these things we do be
spiritual
activities not just physical acts of discipline. All things spiritual take
place in the context of a relationship with Jesus... not just an act of
will
on our part.

James Long

Praise the LORD,

Am I glad to find Christian with similar interest. I was about to give up
with Bible memory. I did not find any support from fellow Christians around
me. Though, we ask the children at Sunday School to remember their verses,
but as adults we do not do it. We should be examples for the children, but
we leave it behind us.

How do I retain the WORDS? The more I remember, the more time I need to
keep it in mind. What do you do when you are at work, and being kept busy -
help.

BTW, I am 45 years old and living in Singapore.

God bless
Lawrence

Subject: Re: Newbie Introduction
From:

James: Yes, I am a retired R.N. - retired as of September 1998. Hardly
used
to that yet, but have been so busy I don't really know I'm retired! I am
loving being more involved in my church than I had been able to while I was
a
Nurse Manager on a busy Oncology Unit with 24-hr. responsibility. I miss
my
patients, but not the turmoil of the "new" health care environment with the
budget seeming to be the most important thing.

In reply to your insightful note - I have truly been involved in learning
more about the passionate state of the soul. Years ago I took as my life
motto Philippians 3:10 - "That I may know Him, - " and have spent most of
the
time inbetween trying to do that. I am just now discovering that maybe I
was
"trying" too much, and it's just as you said - just loving Him is how it's
accomplished.

In my Bible reading this week I meditated on two facts: Christ is the
mirror
reflecting His Father, and I am to be a mirror reflecting Christ. That is
amazing to me - that I CAN reflect Him! The second fact is that to be more
like Him I need "to put Him on" - like clothing. That may not be so much a
new thought to you, but all of a sudden those two thoughts came together
for
me in a new way - as I struggled with the fact that as much as I want to
know
Him - God is unknowable - but yet He lets us know so much of Him. I
started
making a list of all the things that I know about Him, and thought about
the
circumstances in my life which lead me to the knowing and I was just
overwhelmed that God can and does allow us to KNOW HIM! To me this has
been
the "beginning of the pursuit of passion", and I just have to pray, "Lord,
clothe me with Yourself!" It seems that all my Bible Study these days
leads
me in that direction, and I am just so thankful that this little bit of
insight has come my way.

Isn't God just so very, very gracious, sweet, and loving, and providing?

To relate this to Scripture memory - I seem to be so much more desirous to
memorize now, and it seems to come so much more easy.

God bless you in your very responsible work.

One way that I have been considering memorizing is to group together
scripture that has the same meaning. I have a book that I use to read
every day and the scripture all ties in together.
You can search the bible for the verses and then write them in a journal to
carry with you to doctor's visits, etc.

If anyone has any more suggestions let me know.

From: "James Long"

Tricia, I highly recommend the Topical Memory System mentioned in another
post I just made. For others not familiar with this tool I will give a
brief
description (this is based on the old TMS, the TMS currently sold by the
Navigators is slightly different, but still quite good):

The TMS is arranged with six main headings. The main topics are as follows:
The Wheel, the Gospel, Promised Blessings, the Challenge, Resources, and
Expected Fruit. Each main topic has six sub topics, and each sub topic has
three verses. This makes the whole system 6x6x3=108 verses. It sounds like
a
lot, but the topical structure makes it reviewable, systematic, and able to
be passed on to others. Since life is topical, it is a great resource,
since
one memorizes the topics with the verses. After memorizing the entire
system
a person can instantly quote three verses on most any topic.

I have the old TMS in MS Word format (and possibly Adobe Acrobat if
needed).
If anyone is interested just e-mail me direct and let me know.

Hi Trish:

My name is Lloyd and I live in Nanaimo, B.C., Canada. There are a couple
of
formats that I have learned to help me communicate the gospel. One is
Evangelism Explosion and the other is from the Navigators. In their 2:7
Course 3 the bridge illustration is used and the following verses are used:

All have sinned -Romans 3:23; Isaiah 53:6
The penalty for sin -Romans 6:23; Hebrews 9:27
Christ paid the penalty -Romans 5:8; I Peter 3:18
Salvation not by good works -Ephesians 2:8,9; Titus 3:5
Must receive Christ -John 1:12 (I add verse 13 as well); Rev. 3:20
Assurance of salvation -I John 5:13; John 5:24 (great verse).

These verses go along with drawing the bridge illustration as you share so
the listener has a graphic with specific Scripture verses. The Evangelism
Explosion format utilizes lead in questions and Scripture verses with some
excellent illustrations.

Let me know if this helps.

Yes, there is an online answer to your question. If you'll go to

the late 70's. At some point they shortened the TMS from 108 verses to
something like 80 (not sure on the number in the new one). I have the old
TMS in MS Word format and I can probably port it to Adobe Acrobat if that
would serve better.

I just print it out on card stock and then cut it up with a paper cutter. I
also laminate my verse cards after I cut then to seal them from moisture.
Lamination is almost a necessity if you have an inkjet printer since they
smear so bad.

E-mail me direct if you want a copy of the Word or Adobe format "old" TMS.

A while back someone suggested using the Navigator's topical Bible memory
system. I didn't get it ordered and in the meantime, our Christian
bookstore closed. The nearest one is 320 miles away (I live in Alaska).
Does anyone have an on-line source to obtain this?

Thanks.

Not sure where, but you may want to consider this as well:
The Memlok Starter Kit. $9.95 (small groups of 3 or more buy it for $8 plus
10%s/h.)
I'll email the info if anyone doesn't have net access.
http://www.memlok.com/starter.html
49 of the TMS's 65 verses are in the full system (48 topics of 12 each).

This post sent off a bell in my head. I have this little devotional book
called
Daily Light written by Bagster & Lotz. I think Lotz actually republished
it.
But there is a morning and evening page. It starts with a topical verse
such as

Titus 2:10. Then it will have many verses that give further meaning to that
verse. I find it useful in memorizing a verse as I have more understanding
of
what the lord has intended for me to understand.

From: "One of the McKays"

I am still having a go at memorising passages.

But it gets tough when it gets busy at school. [I am a high school music
teacher]

I began with 2 John [guess why?] then Philemon, but have spent this year in
1 Peter.

It is such a blessing to spend time in one Bible book. And 1 Peter is
fantastic. I find it hard to see how people can argue against some biblical
teachings [such as the special roles of men and women, clearly taught in
Scripture] if they were to learn the passages as part of God's Word!

And while I have been in 1 Peter 3, I keep thinking how much of what Peter
says to men or women actually applies to both!

For instance, he tells women to win their non-Christian husbands through
purity and reverence, rather than with words. Then later he tells men and
women to win people with gentleness and respect [and also being able to
explain the reason for our hope when asked].

I find it inspiring to read all the posts of members efforts to meditate on

Subject: Re: Anyone memorized Revelation?
From:

Hey Bob,
In a few days, I am going to pick a book in the New Testament to
memorize, probably 1John.
Do you think that a good first step would be to memorize the outline of
the book first? I had a book that gave outlines to every book in the Bible
using acronyms, I need to find it.
I figure that once the outline is memorized then you have the basic flow
of the book down. Then maybe start learning "key" scriptures located in
the
different parts of your outline. Would this be better than just starting
from the beginning? Also, maybe it would be good while memorizing the
outline to memorize key facts such as the ate written, author, to whom
written etc.
If your study Bible does not have a good outline in the beginning of
Revelation a good book to get is , "The Bible Book By Book, by G. Coleman
Luck."

Note: This is a small portion of one of the outlines at the above site. I
think that it may be a little too detailed for our purposes. Maybe you
could
edit it down a bit. ( A lot.)

I. Introduction (1:1-20).
A. Writer and communicators of this book (1:1-9).
1. The writer of the book is John the
apostle (1:1,4,9).
2. It is the revelation of Jesus Christ
(1:1,5,9).
a. Given to Jesus by Jehovah (1:1).
b. For the benefit of the servants of
Jesus (1:1).
3. The message was expressed in signs by an
angel (1:1).
4. Qualifications of the writer of the book
(1:2).
a. Bore witness of the word of God
(1:2,9; 1 John 1:1-2)
b. Witnessed the testimony of Jesus
(1:2,9).
B. Blessing on readers and hearers of this book
(1:3).
C. Book written to the seven churches in Asia
(1:4-6).
1. Grace and peace to the seven churches
(1:4).
2. The grace and peace comes from Jehovah,
and the seven fold
Spirit, and from Jesus (1:4-5).
D. Benefits coming to us from the Lord (1:5-6).
1. Jesus is the faithful witness, firstborn
of the dead, ruler of the
kings of earth (1:5).
2. Jesus removes our sins by his blood, and
makes us a kingdom
of priests (1:5-6).
3. Jesus comes with the clouds (a heavenly
host) (1:7).
4. The coming will be public (1:7).
5. He is first and last and Almighty (1:8).
E. Revelation made to John on Patmos (1:9-16).
1. John was in the spirit on the Lord's day
(1:10-11).
a. Heard a voice like a trumpet (1:10).
b. The voice told him to write what he
was about to see and
give it to the seven churches (1:11).
2. John saw Jesus walking in the midst of
seven golden
candlesticks (1:12-13).
a. John describes a spectacular vision
of Jesus in his glory
(1:13-16)
b. Jesus holds in his hand seven stars
(1:16).
F. John's reaction was to fall like a dead man
at the feet of Jesus
(1:17-20).
1. John is comforted and told to write what
he is about to see
(1:17-20).
a. Jesus is the first and the last
(1:17).
b. He is the living one, though once
dead he is alive for ever
more (1:18).
c. Jesus has the keys of death and Hades
(1:18).
d. John is told to write this revelation
and prophecy (1:19).
2. Mystery of the seven stars and
candlesticks (1:20).
a. The stars represent angels
(messengers) (1:20).
b. The candlesticks represent churches
(1:20).
II. Letters to the seven churches of Asia (2:1 to
3:22).
A. To the church at Ephesus (2:1-7).
1. Addressed to the angel of the church
(2:1).
a. Angel means messenger, or to deliver
a message.
b. It is most often used of an order of
created beings,
superior to man and belonging to
heaven (Heb. 2:7;
Psa. 8:5; Matt. 24:36; Mark 12:25).
c. The devil has angels (Matt. 25:41).
d. Any messenger of God is an angel.
The priest who taught
the law is called a messenger
(Hebrew: angel) of Jehovah
(Mal. 2:7).
e. The evangelist of the various
churches is called an angel--
messenger of Jehovah--because he
taught the people by
reading to them the word of God and
explaining its
meaning (2:1).
2. The message is from Jesus (1:5; 2:1).
3. The Ephesian church praised (2:2).
a. They worked (2:2).
b. They rejected evil men--false
teachers (2:2).
c. They tried men who called themselves
apostles and found
them false (2:2). The Ephesians were
too well informed to
be carried away with false apostles.
Many in our day can
not detect a false apostle because
they do not know what
the true apostles taught.
d. They were not weary in well doing
(2:3).
4. Complaint against the Ephesian church
(2:4).
a. Left their first love (2:4).
b. Repent and do your first works (2:5).
c. Life needs changing toward God only
to the degree it has
changed from God.
d. The Ephesians were guilty of growing
cold in the basic
doctrines of the church. Having
heard it often, they were
tired of hearing it. They were to
revive the old time zeal.
5. Terrible threat against Ephesus (2:5).
a. The demand to repent (2:5).
b. The warning of removing the
candlestick (2:5)--the
candlestick represents the church
(1:20).
c. A faithful church can be rejected
because of indifference to
truth and be removed (2:5).
6. Continues praise (2:6).
a. They hated the works of the
Nicolaitans (2:6).
b. Jesus hates the works of the
heretics and so should we (2:6).
c. Jesus approves the first stand of
the church at Ephesus
against false teachers (2:6).
7. The victorious servant would be given to
eat of the tree of
life in the paradise of God (2:7; Gen.
3:22; Rev. 22:2,14).
B. To the church at Smyrna (2:8-11).
1. The authority of Jesus (2:8, Rom. 1:4).
2. Jesus knew about their suffering (2:9).
3. Though they had tribulation and poverty,
they were rich in
spiritual possessions (2:9).
4. The synagogue of Satan in Smyrna (2:9).
a. Jews who would not accept Jesus were
not really Jews.
b. They did not walk after the example
of Abraham (John
8:39-40).
5. Physical suffering is not to be feared
(2:10).
a. They were to have tribulation 10
days (a full but brief
period) (2:10).
b. Satan was about to throw them in
prison--the devil is the
source of all our misery (2:10).
6. Jesus promised to them a crown of life
(2:10).
7. To overcome is to remain faithful and
therefore not be hurt
of the second death (2:11).
C. To the church in Pergamum (2:12-17).
1. Jesus wielded a sharp sword with two
edges (2:12). He is
capable of punishing the wicked.
2. Pergamum was the dwelling place of Satan
(2:13).
a. A hotbed of sin and persecution.
Antipas, a faithful servant,
had been killed by forces of evil
(2:13).
b. It is possible to be pure in a
wicked environment (2:13).
c. The battle is the Lord's and the
victory will be ours.
3. Some in the church in Pergamum tolerated
the teaching of
Balaam and followed his example, and the
rest did not
condemn them (2:14).
a. Balaam taught Balak to put a
stumbling block in the way
of the children of Israel (2:14).
b. In Numbers 21, 22, 23 we are told of
his crime. He wanted
money. When he could get it for
placing a curse on God's
chosen people, he instructed Balak
to entice Israel with
lewd carousing. They sat down to eat
and drink and rose
up to play. They committed idolatry
and fornication and fell
in one day three and twenty thousand
(2:14).
4. The teaching of the Nicolaitans was like
that of Balaam
(2:15).
5. Repent or be destroyed (2:16).
6. Jesus promises those who overcome the
hidden manna a
white stone and a new name (2:17).

Yours In Christ,
Mark

This may not be exactly what you're looking for, but I memorized John
chapter 15 last summer. It gives a good all-around foundation for your

This
chapter pretty much has it all, and it's not that difficult to memorize.

John 15 is a great one to memorize. A friend of mine recently memorized
John
17 with the ministry team he leads. John 15-17 is so very personal and
really gets at what is on Jesus' heart. These chapters should really be
memory fodder for us all.

Subject: motivation to memorize
From:

I just took my daughter, Natalie, age 13, to a Point of Grace concert last
night. She wanted desperately to go. I told her I would take her on one
condition: she had to first memorze the book of James.

I work with all my children on memorizing scripture (# nine is due in Sept
:-) ). We do it together as a family after breakfast. Last year I began
encouraging them to work independently on memorization. I assigned a
different book to each of them down to the 7 year old who got Philemon.
Natalie's was James. Over the course of several months Natalie managed to
get
half a chapter done. She just wasn't motivated. Then came the concert.

As the concert date approached and she began running out of time she worked
in earnest. At the end she was doing up to 17 verses a day! She got it all
done Saturday night and Sunday we went to the concert!

Her retention has been pretty amazing. I do intend to go over it with her
over the next few weeks to burn it in.

Children have an incredible ability to memorize. Our challenge is to find
the
right motivation.

Subject: Re: Anyone memorized Revelation?
From:

I haven't even had a thought to memorize Revelation! But I certainly
admire
anyone who is out to try. I looked at it when this posting came over, and
I
was really surprised at how much of the text I had in my memory, and hadn't
even tried!

I haven't reported on my progress with my memory project, and I know that
we
said that we would take that accountability when we started the list, so
here
is my first report:

I have revised the plan I had originally - and I don't feel badly about
that
at all, because the new plan I have is working very well - for me.

I started out thinking whole books - and had already done 1 John when the
list came up. But my direction changed when I realized that I memorize so
much better in connection with my in depth Bible study. I have been
teaching
a class (10 weeks - just finished this past Monday night) to some of the
ladies in my church on "How to Study the Bible" - a pretty thorough
explanation of the Inductive process, and in connection with that, there
were
many verses, paragraphs, sections, and books which I used as illustations
for
observing, interpreting, and applying the truth of Scripture. I outlined
and
charted some of these, and gave homework assignments for the same. I found
that as I REALLY understood the meaning of the text, it was so much easier
to
quote from memory. The memorization didn't seem to be so hard.

Since we have been studying the Psalms in our Sunday School class, I have
commited to memorizing the ones we study each week. Some I learned as a
child, but needed to review. I shared my commitment to do this with my
class, and I have challenged them to do the same, or at least make some
sort
of plan for memorization. These, too, have been so much easier to learn by
heart as I've really studied and understand them better.

I believe that I learned much more in my class than my ladies did, although
they tell me that it was very valuable for them, and it is such a thrill to
hear the discussion in our Sunday School class reflect that they are using
the study process as I taught them!

I guess I am saying all of this to say that I agree with one posting which
suggested that maybe outlining a book would make the memorization easier -
if
the outlining leads to a better understanding of the text. Memorizing is
just putting words in your head that won't stay there if the message isn't
what you meditate on.

So what is my progress report? I have memorized 10 new Psalms, a large
passage from Nehemiah, and several chapters in the book of Acts and Romans
since we started this listing. But more than that, I have been so very
much
touched by the Word that I have "chewed up and eaten" that I know I will
never be the same. I have been led to pursue the topic of "Passion", as
descriptive of the early church, because I am convicted that that is what
is
missing in the Church today. It is just a word, one that I was impressed
with, but you cannot imagine where it is taking me!

I do want to memorize complete books.

I can't believe that I am 62 years old, have been a Christian many years,
in
church most of my life, and I'm just now learning some of the things that I
am! God is never quite finished with us, is He? Years ago I took as my
life
motto - "To know Him - - " (Phil. 3:10), but I didn't know that there was
so
MUCH to know!

So the question is, "What am I ( or you) going to do with that which I (we)
DO know?"

For myself, I pray that I will be used to influence the women in my church,
for starters, to just learn what it means to be loved by Christ, and to
love
Him back.

This listing has started me on a brand new journey! Thank you for bringing
us together.

The 2:7 series is a great study series. I use the "Design for Discipleship"
series with college students, and the 2:7 is sort of a community and church
version of the DFD.

Glad to hear you are memorizing the verses, Lloyd.
