Randy:
I commend you for your desire to take initiative at your age to memorize
Scripture. I am one year older and I am working on retention for the
Topical Memory System package. It has been great! I have found practical
situations on a daily basis in which I meditate on a specific verse (i.e.
Isaiah 40:10 Do not fear, for I am with you, Do not anxiously look about
for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, surely I
will uphold you with my righteous right hand.)
With this system you follow a pattern -- topic, reference, verse [word for
word], topic. Review, review, review. Meditate.
Start with the first five assurance verses-- 1 John 5:11,12 -Salvation;
John
16:24-Answered prayer;
1 Cor. 10:13-Victory; 1 John 1:9-Forgiveness; Proverbs 3:5,6 - Guidance.
If you have the opportunity as well, you can begin to encourage new
believers in their walk because these verses are a good way for them to
begin to rely on the truths of the Word.

Subject: For those with lots of verses and no references
From: "Chip McCoy"
Praise the Lord for people who have memorized verses wether by direct
practice or indirectly through other's constant reference. No doubt, just
about everyone has these same symptoms. We know many verses or half-verses
, but cannot recall the location. Then we get in a bind when we get into
discussion with other christians or even those who are not born again.
Consider the following suggestion:
1 Get pen and paper
2 Begin writing every verse (without location) that you can recall.
This may include even a single word. For instance, you know that you read
a verse that has the word success in it (there's only one). You write
down success... then you remember, good success... GOOD !!! Then you move
on to the next line... uh... you remember there's a verse that says, spare
the rod spoil the child... write it down
3 Get a concordance
[as a very gentle note, I have found that there may be a serious difference
between your recall and the actual Bible concordance you are trying to
use. This may be a time to prayerfully question and decide what Bible
version you will use for the remainder of your memorization life]
4 Using the concordance look up every reference you have on your
paper.
You look for success and Bingo!!! There it is !!!
Joshua 1:8
This book of the law
shall not depart out of thy mouth,
but thou shalt meditate therein
day and night
that thou mayest observe to do
according to all that is written therein
for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous
and then thou shalt have good success
You look up spoil the child but you can't find a verse that has what you
seem to recall. You try again and look for 'spare the rod'. You find the
verse, but it seems different, 'spare the rod, HATE the child'... Yikes.
You write down the entire verse and reference. There will be times when
you just can't find the verse. There will be two reasons, either because
you just didn't recall it correctly, or it cannot be found in the Bible
concordance you are currently using. (in which case you may need to look
in another)
5 Write down all of these familiar verses and keep them in your car,
at work, in the kitchen, in your purse (ladies), etc... You already sort
of know these verses, so practice their locations. You will be quite
surprised at how effective you will become in such a short period of time
with the word of God that you sort-of already knew.
6 As with any handling of the scripture... begin making decisions
according to the word of God and not by your own understanding. In all
thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. (I'll let you
look up the reference to that one... ha)
With a tender heart,
Chip McCoy

For years I have tried to memorize Scripture. There is a lot of verses
in my head, but recalling the references have been difficult. I have
found myself in situations where I have been shown to not be the "work
man" in the Lord that I should be. I am 49 years old, and beleive it is
still not too late for me to get a better grasp on Scripture. This is
my desire for personal growth and for being a better witness.

Hello-
I just signed up to receive the list mail on bible memory. We are a
homeschooling family and I have a strong desire to begin scripture
memory with my children.
A program would be nice, but the only one I am thoroughly familiar with is
Scripture Memory Fellowship, and each person in our family would be
required to be on a different "level". I prefer an approach that
our whole family can work on together. I'm not sure at this point
if I even want to use a program. I am not drawn to the ones with
all the bells and whistles, if you know what I mean. I need something
simple.
What I'm leaning toward is just seeking the Holy Spirit about the
particular
needs of my children and family as a whole and gearing our memory work to a
particular topic that would speak to us where we are. One program that I
have inquired about is Naves Topical Memory System, but have not been able
to find anything about it.
I just read a book entitled "You Need to Memorize Scripture" (this book is
from Scripture Memory Fellowship) and it really got me excited.
I have always loved God's Word, but desire to internalize on a
much deeper level.
Any help/encouragement would be appreciated.
Blessings,

we developed a scripture memorization program at our church about 25 years
ago and about a dozen of our members have memorized lots of the pages. It
is
sort of unique, but I would be glad to send you a sample.

Subject: Chosing Scripture to Memorize
From: Lorry Schoenly
Kim:
God's grace to you as you endeavor to work on scripture memory as a
family. I commend to you the Holy Spirit approach in determining what to
memorize. Pray for His direction in choosing verses that will have an
impact on your family. He will direct you to passages.
Be sure to let us know how the Lord works in your life through this. It
is an encouragement to us all.

Hi Kim,
It's the Navigator's Topical Memory System you are having difficulty
finding (not Naves). Their system about $12 and available at most stores.
See a comparison of it and MEMLOK at:
http://www.memlok.com/faq.html
Hope this helps,
Drake
PS 70,000 home schoolers use MEMLOK. It may fit your needs with it's 48
topics and 12 verses for each. The main benefit is the review system.
Anyone can memorize. Most just can't say the verses 5 years later, thus
what they just did was Scripture Forget, not Scirpture Memory :) The 5 min
review system in MEMLOK is the main gift God gave as I see it, even tho the
word picture helps. That feature can be turned off too.
