Actually, there is not an easy way, but some ways are easier than others.

I advise to use a scheme. I divided the passages I decided to memorize into
'lessons' of about 15 to 20 minutes. As you have studied a lesson, you have to
repeat that lesson. If you wait too long before you repeat that lesson, you have
forgotten most of what you've learned. But if you repeat too soon or too many
times in a short period, it gets boring. So the best way is to repeat the lesson
when you begin to forget it. And when you have studied that lesson for the first
time, you forget it sooner than after several times. So you begin with
repetition after a short amount of time, then you increase the intervals by
doing some lessons inbetween.

lesson 1
lesson 1
lesson 2
lesson 2
lesson 1
lesson 3
lesson 3
lesson 2
lesson 4
lesson 4
lesson 3

and so on. I wrote a simple freeware program to make this kind of schemes for an
adjustable number of lessons. It is almost finished, so if you e-mail me
off-list, I can send you a copy as soon as it is finished. Please specify the OS
you use (available for Windows, Mac OS and any Unix version).

Also, make use of all media available. View movies about the bible, browse
through a biblical encyclopedia and look up pictures in children's bibles (too
bad there is very little picture material on the minor prophets etc.). Although
you are probably familiar with these stories, you would be surprised how much
impact these kind of media can have. If you want to memorize, it will help if
you provide the information in a brain-friendly way.

According to brain scientists, a human brain is capable of remembering more data
than the number of molecules in the known universe as long as we live! Maybe
this is one of the things God meaned when He said we were made in His own
image... Forgetting is therefore not a problem of capacity, but of being unable
to recover the data. When we try to hear, feel, see, taste and smell the word of
God, we increase the number of 'grips' needed to restore the info in our mind.
Use it.

I also found out that using an audio bible makes a good start. It helps you to
study for a longer time without aching eyes. It makes you more familiar with the
words of the bible and enables you to concentrate on the text for a longer
amount of time.

These techniques should help you getting started. They mainly increase the
overall familiarity with the bible, rather than memorising verses word for word.
The latter is important too, but since the 'overview', the wider picture of the
bible, is so important, start here, and as you grow, continue by memorizing word
for word.

Terry

Hi Trevia

I am pleased to meet you. I also want to know more
about the bible. I think that there is so much
information in there that I haven't tapped into yet, I
am willing to learn all that I can. May GOD bless and
keep you!

Hi Pam,

Nice to meet you. The only way to do it is to Do it. What I would suggest is
to set aside time specifically for memorization. Next, get yourself a partner
or partners who will hold you accountable. My partner is in Wyoming and I'm
here in NY! So, it can be done if you really want it. Last but not least, ask
the L0rd to assist you in writing the Word of G0d on your heart. Let me know if
I can be of assistance.

In Him,
Trevia

Hi Everyone:

I'm new to the list, and here is my brief introduction. I am 47, married, with
4 great children (21, 18, 16, and 11). I have been a CPA for 22 years, and am
also an ordained Baptist minister, serving a large church here in the Atlanta
area as Minister of Music and Minister to Families.

I have worked off and on over the years at memorizing Scripture, and hope now to
be much more consistent. Early on, I worked through the Navigators Topical
Memory System, but have found lately that memorizing chapters seems to work
better for me. Since I've "started back" in the last few months with
memorizing, I've finished Psalm 5 and am working my way through Romans 8.

Looking forward to participating in the list!!

Hi Pam. I'm new to the list myself. I don't know that there's an especially
"easy" way to memorize Scripture, as I'm sure everyone on the list can attest
:-) .... but, the great news is that it pays spiritual dividends far exceeding
the commitment and work that it takes!

For me, memorizing an entire chapter seems to work better. I'm working through
Romans 8 right now, and basically I just try to review often each day, and do my
best to add a new verse daily. The flow of ideas in a full chapter helps me to
remember, and "link" verses, better.

Hope that helps!! May the Lord bless your efforts at memorizing His Word!

David H.

Is this the verse?

How amazing is HE that directs us on our path!
I just finished reading a book on maintaining sexual purity! And the next day
this is my first memory verse. I am continulaay amazed at HIS reminders that HE
is listening to me!!!

"How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. I
seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have
hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you." Psalm 119:9-11

Hi Pam my name is Jan. I have found that verses which have blessed me or ones
that I feel God has made special to me , I actually write them out. It seems
that in the writing of them the meaning of them becomes real to me

in a special way. A step further to that is that I have also written word by
word and thought about the meaning of each word and the dictionary meaning of
each word and written it out fully with the meanings of the words too. Looking
up the dictionary is especially helpful..There is something about writing the
verse anyway. Also I have put down special verses on little cards and given them
to people who indicate to me might be helped by that verse. My friend laminated
the verse card for me and they are small enough to take with you in your purse.
I hope that I have been able to help

you.

God bless you memorising. Jan

Terry,

Your complete system for memorizing sounds very interesting. I would be
interesting in learning more about it. Especially if there is a software
version coming out soon. Please keep me on your list for announcing when it is
available.

Thanks,

Welcome to the list David! And, most especially, welcome back to memorizing
Scripture! I hope that you will consider finding an accountability partner to
help you stay on track. Like other spiritual disciplines, you will reap the
most out of Scripture memory by practicing it life long, and that kind of
extended commitment is much more likely to happen when another is holding your
feet to the fire. Remember "Two are better than one, because they have a good
return for their work." Ecc 4:9.

Hi Pam!

What I do to memorize a verse is read it over a few
times and then try to apply it to my daily life. I
feel that if I can use what I am reading in daily
activity then I will remember it more. Try it and see
if it works.

hi Pam.

I do have an easy way to memorize, but it isn't for
everyone. But since you asked I thought I would post
it. What motivates me is, I am helping out a local
Bible Quiz program at a church. Bible Quiz is for 7th
- 12th grade, and is in several denominations. That
way you can get motivated to memorize, as well as
impact young people for God. (the kids think it is so
great if you memorize it along with them)

Depending upon the program, they can memorize 15 to 50
verses a week. And this year we are just starting on
the book of John. Which I've discovered (again) is an
awesome book!

so for me, without BQ, I don't know what could
motivate me. maybe thats why I like it so much.

God bless,

Mark
