I am encouraged that the Doriot family takes time to memorize scripture.  I
know they must be so busy there in Irian Jaya.  It must bless them to have
the word in their hearts so much.  I too love to memorize the scripture,
and
as a preacher it makes my preaching a lot better as I don't have to look up
verses.  Verses just come to me as I am preaching.

Hello everyone,

My name is Josh.  I thought I ought to do as the nice email says and
introduce myself to my new friends on the scripture memory list.  I
recently
returned home from two years overseas working with a missionary ship called
MV Doulos, affiliated with Operation Mobilization.  It was a challenging
and
trying time on board with my 300+ brothers and sisters on board from over
40
nations.  One of the biggest things I learned was my own limitations and my
need for more grace through the Scriptures.  So I look forward to
encouraging and being encouraged, praying and being prayed for on this
mail-list.  I'm now home working on a Teaching English as a Foreign
Language
certificate, preparing to transfer to Columbia International University in

I need it, I don't have a bible handy. I'm of the Christian faith, it is

memorize the Scripture, because my way seems to be failing. Which is, just
saying it to myself over and over and over.... there has to be a better
way.

Hello Mamie,

A thought that I've yet to put into practice regarding the Psalms is to buy
a CD or tape with them put to music as they are intended. Learning songs is
a lot easier than learning text.

Greetings in Christ.  I was very interested to see your goal of memorising
the whole book of Psalms!  I love the Psalms, and memorised the book,
chapter by chapter in 1994.  I still review some chapters and they are much
more 'alive' to me than they were before.  I have two other friends here in
New Zealand who have also memorised the book of Psalms.  It may take a lot
of time - but it is definitely worth it.  Keep up the good work!

Fortunately and unfortunately there is only one way to effectively memorise
scripture, and that is repitition.  Unfortunately because it takes a lot of
time and fortunately because by taking so long, it becomes ingrained into
us.  The NT tells us that in the OT times God wrote his laws on tablets of
stone, but that today he writes it on our hearts.  Sometimes I think it
would be just as quick to carve it into stone than it is to memorise it.
But by spending so much time it helps us to meditate on it and make it part
of our lives.  Notwithstanding, here are a few tips I have learnt over the
years.
1) Break the verse up into small phrases
2) Learn the 1st phrase
3) Learn the next phrase
4) Put the two phrases together, and go over them until you could just
about
say them in your sleep.
5) Repeat steps 3 & 4 until you know the verse.
6) Go over the verse about five more times than you think is necessary.
7) Do the same with the next verse.
8) When you have two verses, put them together like you did the phrases.
9) If you are learning a long passage, read the whole passage aloud at  the
beginning of your time memorising and then again at the end.  This way you
are building up a picture of the whole while you are memorising the parts.
10) If you want to retain a passage long term, memorise it and then review
it daily for about a month (even if you go onto other passages).  You can
then leave it for a few months and come back to it and review it till you
can say it fluently again.  Then review it several times a week for another
month.  If you repeat this process again in about six months, you will have
a great chance of retaining it long term.  I have done this with the book
of
James, and now I review as a book about twice a year without much
difficulty.

verse in the bible i.e. Esther 8:9.  Sometimes its like we are playing a

sites there - as most of you know.

I'm wondering what there may be new on the Internet. I haven't had time
recently to do much searching for that, and Stephen is most likely to be
too busy to do as much as he'd like, so maybe some of you who enjoy

Mamie's post reminded me that I've been wanting to ask about Spanish
Bibles.
Does anyone have a recommendation for which Spanish version is a good,
accurate translation (i.e., as close to KJV or NJKV as possible)?

My children and I are discussing the possibility of trying to learn the
Spanish translation of our Bible verses along with the English.  Has anyone
ever tried this?  I'd love to hear from you if so.

I have been memorizing larger portions of Scripture with the help of
suggestions from the good folks on the list.  I am finding though, that my
daily Bible study and meditation is directing me in just WHAT portion to
memorize.  For instance, as I was concentrating on the first chapter of
John
(a favorite passage), I was just overwhelmed (again!) with the eternal
existence of our Lord, His activity in creation, and the wonderful,
unfathomable fact that He intervened in the course of history to become one
of us!  Because this passage impressed me so, I could not leave it for
weeks,
and of course it was a very simple chapter  for me to memorize.  I am
studying other larger passages  now that focus on these supernatural
activities.

I cannot emphasize enough that the memorization comes easier as we STUDY
the
Word, MEDITATE on it,  and INTERNALIZE it.  One of the most useful
activities
that I have found which promotes this learning is "journaling the Word".
First, I paraphrase the passage to speak to my own life situation.
Sometimes
I "pray" the words - maybe just praising the Lord for the promises there,
sometimes confessing an attitude or other sin, and sometimes interceding
for
the one the Spirit lays on my heart.  But I write all this down.  As the
passage takes on personal meaning, I am better able to retain the KJV words
(which is the version I prefer for memorization).  I may spend a week to
several on one passage as the Spirit gives new meaning, and until the
Spirit
leads me to move on.

A valuable by-product of this effort is that I have a record of my
spiritual
journey, and it is a true blessing to go back and see how the Lord has led,
and really count His blessings.  One other is that it is a permanent record
of how one person has come to trust the Lord more and more, and as my
children and their children, and theirs, read these journals after I am
gone,
I have prayed that they will be affected by what they read.

This may be a different approach to memorization, but it is the one which
"works" for me (changes me!).

Jeremy:

Only one suggestion I would add to others - if you can, get a friend to
memorize with you.  It's just so much easier - there is accountability, and
you are able to encourage each other.

How wonderful to hear that there are still young people who have a thirst
for
the knowledge of God.  He truly will reward your efforts by revealing
Himself
and His will for you as you spend time in His Word.

I was wondering about Spanish translations  too. I would like to
memorize the Scripture in Spanish at the same time I'm memorizing it in
English but, like you said, I'm not sure what translation to use. I'm
looking forward to hearing if there is anyone who knows which one is
best.

I may be able to help you,  I am naturally bi lingual in English and
Spanish.  I am from Gibraltar, at the southern tip of Spain a British
Colony.  From experience and i can tell you if you are using KJV in
English an exact word for word equivalent in Spanish is Reina Valera.
