Greetings,

It has been several months since I have been able to tend to the Scripture
Memory Email Discussion List. During the last several months I have been
tending to the needs of my family and tending to issues at work. (My father
passed away, a family member was ill and I have had a big project at work).
So my apologies for ignoring this group for so long.

Now however, I would like to get things going again ...

I think that it is time to get a discussion going again on the topic of
Memorizing Scripture.

How is everybody doing?

What progress have you made in memorizing scripture over the last months?

What struggles have you had in this area and what impact has memorizing
scripture had on your relationship with God and others?

Subject: BibleMem: Know yourself spiritually and physically
From: Bible Memory List

Hi Stephen and others,

At the moment I really discovered the importance to know yourself. Both
spiritually and physically.

Memorization can really help in your walk with the Lord. But we have to be
careful to memorize the right texts. What is our argument to choose a text to
memorize? Is it to boost of our huge Bible knowledge so we can show off to
everyone that we 'even' know that verse? Or is it exactly the verse the Lord
wants us to know by heart? The verse that we struggle with and makes us feel we
have a long way to go with the Lord in this exact area.

I personally believe that there is no text in the Bible that is 'theory only'.
Even the genealogies were intended to indicate the right person to do a
ministry. There is no theoretical knowledge needed to be able to enter the
Kingdom. So if God is trying to change me, I should listen to the texts He wants
me to hear.

It is also important to know yourself physically. How is your brain functioning?
People tend to have preferences in memorization techniques; so let's use that.
People often use the phrase 'photographic memory' when they mean 'very good
memory'. But it is rather a description of how that brain prefers to remember
things: by pictures! People like that have bad luck when it comes to Bible
memorization; there are no pictures in most Bibles. They often have to create
their own mental pictures when they try to memorize the Bible.
But there is much more your brain can prefer to remember. Some prefer written
text. I personally am an audio person. At school I never did my homework because
I didn't need to (my teachers disagreed on that...).
If I visited the lessons, I listened to the explanation of the teacher and that
was sufficient for me to pass tests, including my exams. Even now I remember a
lot of what these teachers said to me almost 20 years ago. I should use that in
Bible memorization. So I mainly use audio bibles. There are plenty.

For Dutch speaking persons like me, there is http://www.voorleesbijbel.nl/ My
English speaking brothers and sisters may use http://www.audiotreasure.com/
Other languages, including Hebrew old testament for the original text
users: http://www.audioscripture.com/
And a greek new testament is found at
http://www.ccel.org/a/anonymous/gnt/home.html
Pronounced better, but (for now) incomplete greek and latin new
testament: http://www.greeklatinaudio.com/

This is what is freely available, ready to download and use. But there are also
good products available commercially, or you could ask libraries for the blind
if they have audio bibles available to seeing persons as well.
Synthetic speech can be a 'last resort' if your favorite translation is not
available...

OK, enough about audio bibles. What I try to say is that it is useful to
investigate how your memory works and use that. It can really be frustrating
otherwise.

I definately would like to be invovled with this list, however right now my
memorizing has been stagnating to a point.  God has been dealing with me the
last week or so on this, that I need to get back with the review and learning
new verses, so your mail came just in time to confirm what He has been saying.

I had been memorizing a verse a day for a period, but then life became hectic (I
became ill, my husband developed health problems, I begans taking
11 graduate hours while working full time, I am having to drive 800-1000 miles a
week, and just life in general).  I am starting tomorrow with a 40 day Lent
project - I do one each year - and will be focusing on praise and worship, and
plan on memorizing 40 new verses during this period.  I would like to ask for
prayer, that God give me the ability and keep me focused, not allowing me to be
distracted from this by all the other requirements of my life.

I am looking forward to hearing from others about what they are doing, how they
are accomplishing it, and the changes that have been made in their lives as a
result of hiding His word in their hearts.

At times it seems too hard to be a Bible memory fanatic. I want to be an

To the members of the Bible Memory List,

The past few months have been busy for me with regards to bible memory.  I
recently (October) got my website up at http://www.word2life.com which is Bible
memory and Bible presentation centric.  Also I've determine to embark on a
challenging Bible memory task this year; that is, I've determined to memorize
Proverbs 10 - 31.  God has impressed upon me that I need to grow in wisdom and
what better way to gain wisdom than to memorize Proverbs!  I'm moving along at a
rate of about 2 verses a day and spend 10 to 12 hours a week on the project.  By
employing Supermemo and various mneumonic techiques I'm confident that the task
is doable and that the verses will be lodged in memory for life.

I also home-school and would love to be a part of this group.    I really look
forward to sharing with the people on this list in the word.  I love to memorize
scripture.  I really desire to get back into it and need motivation.  I have two
little ones and one on the way.  I'm trying to memorize Acts...it's been an
ongoing project that is taking way too long.  I know that it is ultimately in
the Lord's hands, but as I said, I do need encouragement and motivation, which
is why I joined this group.  I've memorized Philippians, which is a much smaller
book and it didn't take me near this long.  All I know is that memorizing puts
my mind on the things of God and changes my outlook completely.  As a busy
mother it is a wonderful way to be renewed daily in the word.  It also greatly
influences my dealings with others, especially my children.  Well, gotta run.
Hope to hear from you all.

Dear Friends,

Greetings from Leicester, UK! I work with a Sunday School group for 5-7 year
olds, and am very keen to have the children memorising a verse a month in a
one-year cycle - so 12 verses altogether. John 3:16, John 14:6 and Acts 1:8
already memorised (allegedly...) I would be very interested in members' views on
THE 12 verses to go for. If (as I hope) this generates a fair bit of
correspondence, remember that any additional verse requires another to be
jettisoned!

With many thanks for your help and very best wishes,

Memorizing and Loving it

Dear memorizing friends,

Hi. My name is Phil Walker. I have been a member for a couple years now and
always enjoy reading how God is at work in your lives in the area of Scripture
memory.

My most recent memorized chapters are ISAIAH 53 (25 of us at Upton Lake
Christian School in Clinton Corners, NY memorized this as a school project) and
ISAIAH 6 (in joining one of my students who decided on his own to memorize
this.) Both have long been on my "someday" list, and it was a thrill to get
them. The majesty of God (6) and the glorious suffering of Christ (53) have
given me some wonderful things to meditate on.

I would like to encourage you to visit my website
www.scripturememorychallenge.org The main feature is the New Testament One Year
Challenge where I hope, Lord willing, to soon have thousands of Christians
around the world memorizing one key verse from every chapter of the New
Testament in a year. We also have HAKOTS - Hearts After Key Old Testament
Scripture - who are doing the same with the OT. I would love any help any of
you could give me in spreading the word about the New Testament One Year
Challenge (new groups start every Sept and Jan 1st.) to those you know who might
be interested as well as those of you who have websites who would be willing to
link to www.scripturememorychallenge.org

Finally, I would like to encourage you to consider church Scripture memory.
I approached the pastor a year ago and he supported the idea. He picks the
passage and we go at a very slow pace. In 2004 we only learned 5 short passages
(Ex 34:5-7, 19:5-6, Rom 5:6-8, Ps 63:1-4, and Is 9:6-7) At times it has been
frustrating. After the initial novelty of the idea got 38 (out of about 120
church attenders) to learn the first passage, it dropped quickly with less than
20 having learned the last two.

To begin this new year, the pastor wanted to start with just ACTS 1:8. I
thought that was pretty wimpy, but went along. It has been truly wonderful to
see people struggle intensly with, but finally memorize that one verse.
We are at 48 who have quoted it. I am praying that God will make the truth of
ACTS 1:8 real in our church It has also been eye-opening to realize that many
in the church are convinced that they can not possibly memorize that one verse,
or at least it is not worth the enormous effort. Can I encourage you to think
about starting a church wide Scripture memory program in your church as we help
our "Christian" culture know and appreciate what our God has to say.

In Christ, your fellow servant and Scripture enthusiast, Phil Walker

phil()scripturememorychallenge.org

PS With help from a local pizza shop who let me have
$15 gift certificates at a reduced price, we got 11 church members to quote from
memory all 5 of the 2004 passages in one sitting. Praise God!!

I think that it is time to get a discussion going again on the topic of
Memorizing Scripture.

How is everybody doing?

What progress have you made in memorizing scripture over the last months?

What struggles have you had in this area and what impact has memorizing

Dear Stephen:

The Lord has been working in my life, and I praise Him for it. For one thing, He
has given me a deep desire to memorize His words. I am memorizing books of the
Bible, and am in chapter 8 of Romans.

In Christ, your fellow servant and Scripture enthusiast, Phil Walker

phil()scripturememorychallenge.org

PS With help from a local pizza shop who let me have
$15 gift certificates at a reduced price, we got 11 church members to quote from
memory all 5 of the 2004 passages in one sitting. Praise God!!

Stephen,

I made a huge undertaking for me, but am about to claim success. I have
memorized the book of Philippians. Your programs have been especially helpful
with the "tricky" parts that I have to nail down. I listen to the book of
Philippians usually twice a day: on the way to work and on the way back. I
started it well over a year ago, but really didn't give it much effort until the
past couple of months.

Michelle, one of the best ways to get young children excited about Scripture
memory is through Scripture songs. If you prefer the NIV, some of the best are
"NIV Kids Club" and "GT and the Halo Express" If you prefer the King James, you
can use "Thy Word Productions" Steve Green also has two videos/cds out with
Scripture Memory songs using various translations.

Ok, I am intimidated, LOL! I am interested in memorizing and have a few good
tips now. Actually just went and ordered a Steve Green CD, thanks for that tip!
I know a few songs from my childhood....1 John 4:7-8 was a song my Mom and I
would do at nursing homes.

I have a terrible memory, so it is imposing to me to 'memorize'. And then just
'finding' one that I want to keep. My husband got me a verse-a-day calendar and
I have been looking at those. Did find one from yesterday, took it to work and
hung it in my cubicle, and of course could NOT tell you what it is now.

I have the Bible on tape also. Trying to get thru the Bible, as I have never
done that. Up to 2 Chronicles 30 right now. I am back to church after 25yrs of
not going, so that is a blessing in itself!!!! Purpose Driven Life can be given
the credit for 'getting' me to go find a church, and I have been going a year in
March!!! I am 40, and also have a 3yr daughter at home and a 20yr old son at
college. Work 2 part-time jobs and working towards a degree in court reporting,
so very busy here. Would enjoy thoughts on 'where' is a good place to start?
Thank you!

I was just going to say, our speaker last night said he met a Presbyterian
family last year who only sing Psalms. As a result, their children, not yet
grown, have over half the psalms memorized!

I started memorizing 1 Peter probably over a year ago - when I got almost to the
end of the 2nd chapter I let various distractions get in the way, and have not
soldiered through. Aside from an obvious enemy who would discourage the process,
and my own weak flesh, I wonder if it is because I chose it without enough
prayer and should have picked another book. I'm not so sure of my "hearing" at
times, how have others known for sure what to memorize?

Subject: BibleMem: staying the course
From: Bible Memory List

It is so wonderful to be part of this group!  I have longed for a place where I
could share with others who are of like minds regarding scripture memory.
Seeing all of the e-mails begin to filter through, has been such a comfort to me
recently.  It is motivating, to say the least.  God knew I needed it!

I usually don't share with others regarding how much or what portions of the
bible I have memorized, because I absolutely do not want to sound boastful. I
love the word with all my heart and am thankful for the ability to memorize.
However, I am truly glad that I can feel comfortable here to share what is on my
heart and what I'm memorizing.  Has anyone memorized the book of Acts?  I
started it a couple of years ago, but have not been able to stay the course.  I
am so eager to get to the chapter about Stephen's testimony.  However, I have
had a lot of trouble staying motivated with memorization since becoming the
mother of two, with one on the way, and having some health problems as well.
What are some good suggestions to sticking with it?  I do pray about it and the
desire is there.  I have memorized large portions of scripture in the past, but
I feel somewhat discouraged about not being able to go forward with Acts. I've
made it to about chapter 5, but will need some review.  I think just being a
part of this group will help...I know it will.  However, I would love any
suggestions or just for someone to share their own exp. with struggling to stay
at it and what God showed them.

Thanks.

From: Bible Memory List

I tried doing a Bible Memory Group in our church. At first, there were about 10
people "seriously" interested. Pretty good for a congregation with membership
just over a hundred. needless to say, only 1-3 and people showed up for our
monthly meetings, seven meetings total. Actually, at the last meeting it was
just me sitting there for an hour. It is really pitiful, the lack of diligence
in our culture to do what we know we ought to do and even what we want to do. I
announced the end of the group as a result of inadequate attendance and
participation.

Even the people that showed up would have not memorized even one thing, and what
kind of meeting can be made out of that?

Glad to have found a community on the web that can be some real community and
accountability for me on this.

1. Is this group going to be memorizing verses together or are we on our own as

each other as we're memorizing together.

2. For my two young children, does anyone know of a good program for them
(musically maybe?) that's in NIV?

3. Has anyone tried the Bible on DVD? I've seen it on tv and my husband and I
have thought of ordering it. Any good reviews of such a program?

Thanks and I'm so excited to be here! Michele

silence. am a pastor from india, but now working in a ministry in USA where part
of my family moved in recently- when i said part - i still have my elder and

is to use one verse daily in any communication you make to other christians..
letters or e-mails.. i remember when i was a small boy, my eldest brother who
was serving in indian army used to write letters whome
- of course these letters comes once in a month- and all letters have one verse
on the top. how do you all likes this idea?? and this will make us memorise the
verse as well as the person on the other side?

pls share your views, and my e-mail in this part of the world is

Pastor Jeff, it was good to hear about your interest in Revelation and in mixing
theater with Scripture memory. Have you seen or heard of Marquis Laughlin.
He does a dramatic presentation of Revelation word for word in the NIV. He is
based in Orlando, Florida with Sola Scriptura and also travels around the
country.

Hello!!

I am very excited about joining a group of like minded Christians looking to
memorize large sections of the Bible and relying on each other for ideas,
support and wisdom. I'm a Pastor who also has a full time job in transportation
management. I have a deep love for prophecy and eschatology...end time events.
I'm working on memorizing scripture related to the prophecies that Christ has
fulfilled and to memorize the book of Revelation. I have a long background in
theatre so I employ theatrical memorizing techniques when memorizing large
blocks of scripture...kind of like a one man play and developing different
characters for each person speaking or being spoken about. I do need any
suggestions as this tends to be time consuming (though great fun!) and I'd love
to learn how to memorize scripture using techniques that you speak about....

I look forward to the correspondence and seeing everyone continue to grow closer
to God....
In Christ;
Pastor Jeff

The Bible memory list is designed to encourage friendly discussion on the
topic of Bible memorization. Please post a message to the list to
introduce yourself. Messages to the list should be sent to:

If you read through the scriptures, you will easily see that knowledge of the
word of God is vital to a close relationship with God. Of course, head
knowledge alone is not good enough. It must be understood and applied to your
life. Meditation, prayer and Bible study play a key role in understanding.
Clearly, if you have memorized portions of the word of God, it makes meditation
much more profitable. Also, all who have grown to a certain level of maturity
must teach the things they know to others. For a brief article on why scripture
memorization is important to the growth of a Christian, you may want to read my
article at http://www.memoryverses.org/why.htm.

But, to master this discipline is very difficult ...

Purposes of this list:

    - To collect together a group of people who have a desire to make the
memorization of scripture and meditation on what has been memorized a
significant portion of their lives.

    - I would like to bring together a group of people whose goal is to commit
to memory large portions of Scripture. My ultimate goal, is to memorize as
much of the Bible as I can, and to take as many people along with me as I can.

    - These people can share ideas, encourage one another, set goals and be
accountable to one another for progress and be praying for one another.

    - To discuss how we can help others, such as our children, Sunday School
class and Church friends, etc., learn to love memorizing scripture.

     - To discuss various tools, props and aids which are effective in the
memorization and review of scripture. This includes everything from verse cards
to mnemonic devices. If your goal is to memorize many chapters of scripture,
then the organization and presentation of the material is critical. These tools
and methods must be developed.

    - To discuss how time and other activities can be scheduled to allow for
what we want to accomplish, while still maintaining balance in all other areas
of life.

    - To share the blessings of knowing the word of God.

    - Memorization of information is not enough. It must be learned permanently,
it must be understood and applied. Review, study and meditation is a key
component of any scripture memory system. Discussion of these topics is
welcome.

It is asked that you follow these guidelines when posting to the list:

1) The list is open to all Christians who believe in salvation by faith alone
through the work of Jesus Christ who is our Lord and our GOD.

2) This is not a forum to discuss the merrits of one Bible translation over
another. This is also not a forum to discuss theology unless it is directly
relevent to the theme of memorization of Scripture as defined above.
Please
do not stray from this topic.

3) It is assumed that the Bible is the inspired, inerrant, word of God and as
such has authority over our lives.

4) Do not send requests for personal information to the entire list. These
types of messages should be sent directly to the individual.

5) Do not make negative personal comments to or about any individual on the

Subject: BibleMem: Supermemo for scripture memory-David Baldwin
From: Bible Memory List

Dear group,

Hello!  My computer crashed and I lost David Baldwin's excellent video example
on the internet for using Supermemo to help review scripture.  What is the URL
for that David?  Supermemo is a great program.  David, do you have any supermemo
collections related to Scripture or Christian things that you would like to
share?  My email is HYPERLINK "mailto:gandk14()molalla.net"gandk14()molalla.net

I took all the chapters that I have memorized over the years and recited them
for 100 days in a row (mostly).  I got this idea from
http://www.fbcdurham.org/writings/Scripmem.htm  Also, Stephen (our
moderator) suggests the hundred day idea too.  Now I review them every week or
two.  The 100 days idea really helped cement them in my mind.  I timed myself
first to see how long it would take to recite one chapter.  To say a chapter it
takes about 3 minutes.  I can fit that easily in my day:either all at once (on
my walk) or in a few minutes spread throughout the day. .  I had about 40-45
minutes to do for all the scriptures I had memorized.  Since I need exercise
anyway, I did this on my walk.  This is a very uplifting walk.  My family is
glad I memorize scripture.  They say I am a better mom for it.  Since I feel
those scriptures are secure I am starting on Romans 6.  I like memorizing books
and chapters better than individual verses.  I found if I make memorizing and
reviewing a priority, with the Lord's help, it happens.  I have a large family
and I homeschool, so no excuses out there!!  With my children we are memorizing
James.  We have the first chapter down.  It took a year (we weren't as
consistent)  Even my 4 year old can say it!  Now we are starting on chapter 2.

The best book I have found is "His Word in my Heart" by Janet Pope. Very
practical and insipiring.

Thank you!

Thanks.

Subject: BibleMem: About Church Bible Memory Projects

In Christ, your fellow servant and Scripture enthusiast, Phil Walker

phil()scripturememorychallenge.org

PS With help from a local pizza shop who let me have
$15 gift certificates at a reduced price, we got 11 church members to quote from
memory all 5 of the 2004 passages in one sitting. Praise God!!

Subject: BibleMem: Questions
From: Bible Memory List

I have three questions:

1. Is this group going to be memorizing verses together or are we on our own as
to what we'll be memorizing? I'd love to have a group where we can encourage
each other as we're memorizing together.

Michele

Denna your honesty is so refreshing!  I too am a full time graduate student and
struggle with scripture memorization. I will be in prayer for you for victory in
that area. Please do the same for me.  My daughter and I are on a 40-day
renewing of the mind with scriptures time of consecration which began
yesterday  The desire to be faithful in scripture memory is half the battle.
Maybe during your 40-day consecration time you might wish to focus on scripture
that will allow you to renew your mind in specific areas.

Blessings
Mel

Hi dear all

I was wondering what happened with the memoryverses.org as there has been a long
silence. am a pastor from india, but now working in a ministry in USA where part
of my family moved in recently- when i said part - i still have my elder and
minor children still in india. i found one of the best way to remember verses
is to use one verse daily in any communication you make to other christians..
letters or e-mails.. i remember when i was a small boy, my eldest brother who
was serving in indian army used to write letters whome
- of course these letters comes once in a month- and all letters have one verse
on the top. how do you all likes this idea?? and this will make us memorise the
verse as well as the person on the other side?

pls share your views, and my e-mail in this part of the world is

Blessings.

Pastor Jeff, it was good to hear about your interest in Revelation and in mixing
theater with Scripture memory. Have you seen or heard of Marquis Laughlin.
He does a dramatic presentation of Revelation word for word in the NIV. He is
based in Orlando, Florida with Sola Scriptura and also travels around the
country.

Deborah

I look forward to the correspondence and seeing everyone continue to grow closer
to God....
In Christ;
Pastor Jeff

The Bible memory list is designed to encourage friendly discussion on the
topic of Bible memorization. Please post a message to the list to
introduce yourself. Messages to the list should be sent to:

        biblememory()memoryverses.org

Discussion of these topics is
welcome.

List Guidelines
---------------------

5) Do not make negative personal comments to or about any individual on the
list. Ideas are fair game for debate, but the individuals who hold these ideas
should be treated with respect.

6) Please limit the amount of quoted text when you reply to a somebody's post.
Generally a sentence or two is enough.

Subject: BibleMem: Supermemo for scripture memory-David Baldwin
From: Bible Memory List

Dear group,

Hello!  My computer crashed and I lost David Baldwin's excellent video example
on the internet for using Supermemo to help review scripture.  What is the URL
for that David?  Supermemo is a great program.  David, do you have any supermemo
collections related to Scripture or Christian things that you would like to
share?  My email is HYPERLINK "mailto:gandk14()molalla.net"gandk14()molalla.net

I took all the chapters that I have memorized over the years and recited them
for 100 days in a row (mostly).  I got this idea from
http://www.fbcdurham.org/writings/Scripmem.htm  Also, Stephen (our
moderator) suggests the hundred day idea too.  Now I review them every week or
two.  The 100 days idea really helped cement them in my mind.  I timed myself
first to see how long it would take to recite one chapter.  To say a chapter it
takes about 3 minutes.  I can fit that easily in my day:either all at once (on
my walk) or in a few minutes spread throughout the day. .  I had about 40-45
minutes to do for all the scriptures I had memorized.  Since I need exercise
anyway, I did this on my walk.  This is a very uplifting walk.  My family is
glad I memorize scripture.  They say I am a better mom for it.  Since I feel
those scriptures are secure I am starting on Romans 6.  I like memorizing books
and chapters better than individual verses.  I found if I make memorizing and
reviewing a priority, with the Lord's help, it happens.  I have a large family
and I homeschool, so no excuses out there!!  With my children we are memorizing
James.  We have the first chapter down.  It took a year (we weren't as
consistent)  Even my 4 year old can say it!  Now we are starting on chapter 2.

The best book I have found is "His Word in my Heart" by Janet Pope. Very
practical and insipiring.

From: Bible Memory List

To all,

Accountability would be very helpful to me as I pursue God's Word.  There are
some in my church and elsewhere with whom I check in from time to time, but as I
could certainly use more support I'm going to go out on a limb here and commit
myself to accountability to this group.  Currently I'm working on Proverbs 10-31
and would like to complete the project by year's end.  I just started in on
chapter 12 yesterday and should be completed by February 28th.  I'll report in
at month's end.  (The mere act of writing this email is already helping me to
resolve that that report will be a good one!)
