Hello everyone!
I can't tell you my real name (it's a family policy), but I look forward to
memorizing God's Word with all of you.

Now for my memorization history:  I have always liked memorizing the
Bible.  A couple years back, I tried to memorize Psalm 119 (for the wrong
reasons.  My children's pastor agreed to do eat a devotional book if I did.
Don't ask why I agreed).  Now I am memorizing the book of Acts in
connection
with the Assemblies of God Bible Quiz program.  But the real reason I
joined
was to have a organized way to memorize God's precious Word.

My methods for memorizing large portions of Scripture is very complicated,
but
basically I memorize 15-60 verses and (almost) daily review the last 2
chapters
(at least) a week.  I spend anywhere from a 1/2 to 1 1/2 hours a day
(usually!)
doing this.  Hopefully the verses will stick with me after I stop quizzing.
(BTW, if I was memorizing this on my own, I would only memorize about 2
verses
a day).

What an excellent way to turn suffering into constructive work for the
Kingdom of God. I must say, you have a fine attitude, to do something so
noble with your discomfort. Many of us would merely spend the whole night
complaining. You are a good example to us all!

Hello my new friends!
My name is Randy Little.  I'm new to the list.  I've been a sporadic
memorizer for about twenty-five years.  I've tried individual verses on
various topics, but found I could digest whole chapters much easier.
One thing I do is I bought the NIV NT on CD and listen to it in the car on
long drives.  This gets the Word into me in large volume.  They now have
the whole Bible on CD for about $150.
Then, I get a 90 minute cassette and record one chapter repeatedly on it
and listen to it.  I also have it printed out and kept in my shirt pocket.
This way I have auditory and visual cues.  I don't read while driving
though.
I try and get the broad strokes of the passage in my head then work on the
specific verses.
I also print out a copy of the chapter I'm working on and tape it to my
mirror to work on while I'm in the bathroom in the morning.  Admittedly,
not much concentration happens at that time, but I make a little headway.
I also review what I'm currently working on just before I go to sleep each
night and it reinforces it for the next day.
I've enjoyed the first posts I've received.  There's just something of
depth and quality about people who memorize scripture.
My wife is the real memorizing machine.  She's got a wooden box loaded
with little cards.  (She's a Nav from way back.)  She reviews a bunch when
she walks in the morning.  She clobbers me on the Bible trivia game,
especially the OT.

Diane,
In the early '80's (maybe even the late '70's) Jerry Lucas (famous memory
expert) wrote "Remember the Word".  It's a excellent method for the four
Gospels.  It takes up the method from his book "The Memory Book" (still in
bookstores) co-authored with Harry Loraine.  He's modified his method.
Check out his website at www.jerrylucas.com.  He uses visualization
exclusively.  I don't know what his new method is like now, but his old one
is great!

Get the Navigator's "Bridge to Life" Gospel tract.  It's simple and clear
and straight forward.  There's not a whole lot of verses.  If you complete
the Nav's Topical Memory System (a.k.a. TMS) they have it in there.
Christian bookstores can order it if they don't carry it.
Or, I can send you the verses off list.

There have been a lot of new folks in this last month so I am reposting
some
of my tips. Not that I have all the answers but I have managed to memorize
several books in the last four years using these techniques. And I have
pretty
good recall on them, too.

Hope all of you folks that have been on for awhile bear with me.

I recommend you work on a passage at a time.
I believe you should strive for a verse every day or maybe two days.
Otherwise, the reward of having a passage down is delayed for too long and
I, personally, would get too discouraged.

I don't usually include the verse numbers as I memorize by chapter. When I
want to find a verse, I know what chapter it is in and can find the verse
quickly. I personally feel the effort made to memorize specific verse
numbers
is wasted and distracts from the flow of the text. When reciting long
chapters, I love to do it dramatically and convey a sense of what I believe
is
the author's heart. I frequently have the opportunity to do it before a
church
and I would encourage the rest of you to do it as well. It gives you a goal
and forces you work hard on the project. It really moves people in a
powerful
way.

Here are some of my tips:

1. Get the passage you are memorizing on a 3 X 5 card so that you can carry
it
with you. I use my computer, import the text from my Bible program into
Word,
set the document size to 3" wide by 5" tall, .1" margins (or the minimum
your
printer will allow), Arial or Arial Narrow font at 6 or 8 points, whatever
you
can comfortably read.

2. Start in the morning 1st thing. You put deoderant on every morning,
don't
you? Make it as important as deoderant to work on your verse.

3. Start at the end of the passage and work backwards to the begining. The
reason for this will become clear. This way, when reciting the passage from
memory, what is most recently being worked on is at the top of the passage
and
gets the most amount of repititions- frequently you won't have time to
recite
through to the end of the passage, especially as the # of verses memorized
begins to grow.

4. Read, out loud, the paragraph before the verse you are working on every
morning (and later in the day if possible). This way when you start
memorizing
a verse you're already fairly familiar with it.

5. After reading the paragraph before, work on your new verse. Repeat it
out
loud several times until you can quote it from short term memory. Then
recite
the rest of the passage from memory.

6. Apply the Deut. 6 principle: "Talk about them when you sit at home and
when
you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as
symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the
doorframes of your houses and on your gates. Try to recite your new verse
whenever you have a few seconds: in the shower, at a stop light, at your
coffee break, lunch hour, waiting in the checkout line, waiting for someone
to
answer a phone. And if time permits, continue reciting the rest of the
verses
in the passage that you have previously memorized.

7. The last thing on your mind as you are going to sleep is reciting your
new
verse and the rest of the passage (if you don't fall asleep first!). It has
happened numerous times that I would be struggling with a difficult verse
but
diligently work on it all day and the last thing at night, and then,
somehow,
the next morning, it would be there. Occasionally it wouldn't be and then I
just spend two days on that verse until I get it. Don't be afraid to spend
as
many days as necessary; just work on it diligently and consistently,
remembering to occasionally read out loud the previous verses and to recite
the following verses from memory.

8. Slow and steady wins the race. Consistency, repitition and review.
There
are no substitutes.

9. Spend 10 minutes a day working with your children to memorize (that's
what
got me into this- I needed to be an example). They don't have to work near
as
hard as you do and there is no more important thing that you can teach them
(do you believe that? Then demonstrate it by your actions!). My children
have
memorized numerous chapters in the last 4 years.

It takes time and dedication, there are no shortcuts that I know of. But
there
is nothing that is more worthwhile that I can spend my time on. But the
irony
is that the time spent on it is time that would be normally wasted. It
doesn't
take "extra" time.

Make it a long term goal. Memorize a book this year; two books next year;
the
new testament in 20 years; the psalms by age 60; the bible by age 80. What
else are you going to do?

My wife and I just started, yesterday as a matter of fact, to memorize =
the book of Mark.  We heard an actor a few years ago dramatize Mark all =
the way through from memory and it impressed us so that we decided to =
try it.  While we have both been working to memorize portions of =
scripture we haven't yet attempted any thing like this.

We're hoping to have memorized the first chapter by Saturday.  What we =
do takes a lot of time and is further complicated by our committment to =
doing it together but I know it will be worth it.  We decided to first =
recite the goal verses to each other, over and over again until we knew =
it and then we wrote down the verses so we could study them through out =
the day.

Pray for us and I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm just finishing up on the small book of Second John.  Remember to
include
some meditation time in with your memorizing!  I think I understand the
book
better than ever before, even though I've read it over and over through the
years.

Thought I'd mention a few things I use as aids to my memorizing on the
macintosh computer.  (Maybe you PC folks have some similar things you might
want to post?)

Anyway, one good thing I like to use that every mac owner has is
simpletext.
I can write the scripture down on paper to test myself, and then while I
check
my paper, I have simpletext read the same scripture aloud to me.  (Look
under
the sound menu and choose "speak all")It is really helpful for catching
omissions and other errors.  You can even do this in Spanish with the
"Carlos"
voice.

The other thing I've mentioned before, but will do so again for the
newbies.
(Welcome all you new folks!) Clarisworks comes with most (all?) Macs.  I
like
to use Clariswork's slide show.  It is a simple thing to do.  If you need
instructions, I'd be glad to explain by private e-mail so as not to bore
everyone else with the details.  The slide show will flash the verse on the
screen, much in the same way you would look at a flash card, but at timed
intervals, and in much larger print.  Probably other word processors do the
same, PC or Mac, I would imagine.

Lastly--this is getting longer than I expected--I have a project that I
work
on alongside my Bible memory.  I am making a handwritten copy of the
scripture, just as the Israeli kings were required to make their own copy
of
the law.  I do this off and on, and expect to continue over a number of
years.

That was just one of the many benefits I found in memorizing a lot of
Scripture! When you have those verses in your mind, the Holy Spirit will
use them. I was very shy, but this helped give me more confidence too. (And
now I'm a missionary! Well, you never know ...)  :)

You have some great ideas there.  I have one warning though!  I bought the
NIV
on cd, and found three mistakes in it!  A couple of the mistakes were
fairly
obvious and insignificant, repeating a line, getting an obscure name in the
list of "begats" wrong.  (We don't want anything wrong in our Bibles, but
these were less dangerous than the third mistake.)  Another was a misquote
in
the Psalms where David got a "not" inserted in his sentence--changing the
whole meaning of his words.  I took the CD's back!

The company was contacted by the bookstore who said that they were aware of
the mistakes, but intended to sell their inventory anyway!  The bookstore
mgr.
said he wasn't buying from them any more.

Anyway, I am so hoping someone else puts out a CD of the NIV, because CD's
have an advantage in that you can play one track over an over when you are
memorizing that passage.  I really liked that.

I have found that every translation and version has its strengths and
weaknesses.  I grew up using the Old King James; that is what I have heard
preached most of my life, so it is the most familar to me.  I believe it is
still the most widely read.  I don't say that everyone must use this
version -
but the beautiful, flowing, musical language of this version lends itself
so
readily to memorization, I find it EASIER to memorize from this one and use
the others to enlarge on my understanding of it.  And since others are more
likely to be familar with at least the SOUND of verses from the King James,
I
feel that it lends itself more readily to witnessing.  As others have said,
though, you must use the one you feel more comfortable with.

Hi all,
Several years ago, I used the Topical Memory System to memorize Scripture.
While it's a good system, they suggest repeating the Topic, Reference, Read
the verse, & then repeat the reference in that order. I found a couple of
problems with this. First, since I reviewed the verses in the same order, I
wasn't able to recall some verses without mentally repeating the verses I'd
memorized before that verse. Also, I wasn't able to recall the verse
without
mentally repeating the Topic & Reference first. A question also arose
concerning memorizing topically. I found that sometimes the same verse
would
be on more than one list. Do I re-memorize it to connect it with the new
topic?

Hello!  I just wanted to introduce myself.  My name is Mark, and I
just signed up for this Bible Memorizing list.  I'm not sure how big
it is (I assume that it isn't very big, considering the type of list
it is) but any accountability, and encouragement in memorizing the
scripture is good.

I just graduated from Oral Roberts University, and right now I am a
Bible Quiz coach, in the Assemblies of God denomination.  My goal each
year is to memorize the whole books of study along with the teens.  (I
figure that if I tell the teens to do something I should be willing to
do it too.)  2 years ago I memorized up to chapter 26 of Matthew, last
year I was able to memorize all of Romans and James, and this year I
have most of Acts memorized.  Memorizing scripture has really made the
Bible  "come alive" in my life.  Any time I am going through a
struggle, or circumstance, God brings back verses I had memorized to
show me how he is working in the situation.  Since BQ is on an 8 year
rotation, my goal is by the year 2004 (should the Lord tarry) to have
15 of the New Testiment books memorized.

I am guessing there probabally isn't very much discussion on this
list, so if that is true, I just wanted to tell you that I will be
praying for you (people on the Bible mem list), as you continue to
study the Scripture.  Also, please remember to keep me in prayer as I
stive to accomplish my 5 year goal of Bible memorization.

I had some questions about this list.  Since I use a Mac, i wasn't
able to download the archives, so I was wondering, what have you been
talking about?  Is there a specific program the list is using for
memorizing scripture, or is everyone doing their own programs?  Also,
have people been using the list to keep accountable in their
memorizing?  Is there a way to see how many people are on this list?

Any help would be appreciated.

I've been very pleasantly surprise by how much memorizing large groups of
verses has changed my understanding and appreciation for scripture.  I've
read Mark quite a few times but as I try to memorize it I find it really
coming to life for me.

It is the most calming, tension relieving exercise anyone can do, and it is
a
scientific fact that the brain is very receptive to input at this time,
just
before sleep.  Can it be that the Holy Spirit knows something about our
brains
and the way we encode knowledge that it took Science many years to
discover?
The Scripture does admonish us to "think of them when we lie down at
night."
It has helped me to memorize.  And it is just as pleasant to wake up in the
morning with the same Scripture on my mind as I had when I fell asleep!

I wanted to offer some other suggestions for bible memorization as well:

Use scriptual screensaver:  I found one on the internet.  Do a search
with the word "frontlets."  I have scripture flashing
across my screen all day.

Audio tapes:               Someone blessed me with an audio tape that
has music, sounds of the ocean and
scriptures being recited.  I play it while I am
on my way to sleep at night.  Though I don't
hear all of it before I fall asleep, it still is
feeding my spirit.  May sound crazy, but helps.

Use in conversation:            The more we use scripture in our
conversations, the more we will remember those
scriptures.  I find that as I am speaking,
scriptures I have read become more alive as
pertain to whatever I am talking about.  Once I
have experienced something, I tend to
`                      remember the scripture that pertains to it
better.  So, always ask the question, "What
scripture pertains to this situation?"

Flash cards:                This one seems to be very popular for
memorization.  What I planned to do is to
use a 3x5 card, putting the scripture book,
chapter and verse numbers on one side and
the verse on the opposite side.

I've always wanted to do this!  Did you know that in many countries where
the Bible isn't aloud to be sold people meke handwritten copies that are
dictated over radio broadcasts for that purpose?  Alot of people in these
places have handwritten cnpies that they have made or that have been handed
down to them.

very difficult because of the genealogy.  I have only been able to memorize
2 verses a day so far but I believe that this hurdle is an important one.
I have always ignored the hard, and, to me, uninteresting parts and have
decided this time to  hit it head on if I ever expect to memorize whole
books of the bible, and eventually the entire N.T.
I really appreciate the BIBLEMEN letters.  It is nice to pray for each
other through our difficulties and share in our triumphs.  There's Victory
in Jesus!.

I plan out how many verses to memorize that day, then I say the first one
out
loud 3 times and think about what it means.  Then I try to say it from
memory
several times and go to the next one.  After 4 verses I go back and review
those
four.  When I have 8 verses done, I review the last 4 and then all 8, and
so it
goes until I have memorized however many for that day. Then I review all
the
ones I memorized the day before, and also the 2 chapters from the last 2
weeks.
This method will help one memorize large portions of Scripture at once; I
recommend not trying to memorize more than 16 verses per day.

Maybe I mentioned this suggestion for memorization earlier:  I have been
writing two or three memory verses on microsoft word and printing them on
8.5 x 5.5 sheets for my day planner there is room for more.  For my wife I
print them on 6.75 x 4.25 sheets.  You can add additional information as
needed.  It seems to be working.  Also, something I started doing many
years ago is to print the first letter of each word on a card.  Use the
punctuation as you normally would do.  It gives you a hint but you still
have to think about it more.

That's wonderful that you're even trying to memorize. I can't even find my
bible so all of you who are memorizing scripture are ahead of the game.
After
I get home from work I'll see if I can find it someplace. I'm always losing
something :)

Please keep me in your prayers. Tomorrow about 18 of us from our church are
going into the city tomorrow to feed the poor/or homeless. We don't have
any
kind of shelter to feed them and we'll be doing this all day long. It's
suppose to rain in the afternoon. I've never done this before so I bought
myself a raincoat just in case. Good thing I did plus someone said to bring
layers of clothing. I was excited in the beginning but now I'm not. I
didn't
realize just how much hard work this is going to be with setting up and
everything. We're helping a woman and handful of her helpers that do this
2-3
times a week. I can't imagine doing that all of the time but she does.
Definitely with the Lord's help.  I know I have to do this just because I'm
so
use to be in my comfortable surroundings, my husband, four children, work
and
church. I've grown lazy and definitely selfish. I need to have my eyes
opened
to the rest of the people around me who are in need. Thanks for listening.

I am still a student, but in the final year of my study (Organization and

I would like to see a feature that would allow users to search and memorize
by topic.  For example, scriptures on worry, controlling the tongue,
victory
over temptation, etc.  It would also be neat to be able to print on 3x5
cards and in booklet format to carry in vest pocket, etc.

Throughout my adult life I have use what I believe is called an =
acrostic.  It always works for me. Try it if you think it will help you =

the Bible, but now I am just trying to memorize those passages that
the Holy Spirit shows me.  The Holy Spirit then recalls those passages
in just the right times of need.

My name is Alan Hutchins and I am a new member to this list. I have been on
for a little over a week but this is the first time that I have posted
anything.  I have been saved nine years and have been somewhat hit and miss
in my Bible memorization. I started out good using the Navigators system
but
have not always been as consistent in my memorization as I would like.

One of my weaknesses has been in developing a good review system to help me
keep the verses that I have memorized over the years fresh in my mind.  I
have recently started using a computer program called LampLight Scripture
Memory Coach.  It is a Windows based program that is available as freeware
off of the internet.  I have found it to be helpful so far especially when
it comes to regularly reviewing verses that I have memorized in the past.

May I suggest the little epistle of First John as a place to start?  This
book
is very short, so you will have opportunity to meet with success early.
And
the book is filled with so many "that you may know" statements that you
have a
wealth of witnessing information as well as assurances for yourself on a
wide
variety of topics.  I love this book!  I am teaching a "How to study the
Bible
for yourself" type of course for the women of my church, and the first
assignment I gave them was to read this book at one sitting every day for a
week.  Many of them have commented about how meaningful the effort was.  I
haven't progressed to the section of my course where we will talk about
memorization, but First John will be one of the first assignments there as
well.  I have emphasized the importance of memorization, but I will devote
whole classes to this discipline.  That is what brought me to this list - I
was seaching for tips to give my class, and other information which will be
of

Greetings from the Big Sky Country of Montana!

My name is Matthew Brandt and I am a Lieutenant in the United States Air
Force. My family and I are
currently stationed at Malmstrom AFB in Great Falls, Montana and we love it
here!  The wide open spaces
and the rugged mountains, the gushing rivers, and the wildlife -- all are
reminders of how great our God is!!
His workmanship is truly awsome!

My wife, Karen, and I think of our commission in the Air Force as a short
term missionary commitment. We
have the opportunity to move around to new places and meet many, many
people at all the different bases
we are assigned to.  We have met a lot of people in this country who have
no clue about the love that God
has for them.  It is our desire to "bring and include" them in our
relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ!

We have three kids,  Logan (8), Matthew Marshall (6), and Shelley (5), and
they keep life interesting! Full of
surprises and energy and zeal for life!  Best of all, each has invited the
Lord to come into their hearts as their
savior and lord!

I am a missile combat crew commander and love my job, the people in my
squadron, and this base.  It is a
real blessing to be able to be a christian in this line of work.  Please
pray that I would be faithful in lifting up
the name of Jesus in my workplace, through my actions and words, and that I
would be a reflection of God
in my commands as I lead the troops in my charge.

I have had a very hard time memorizing these hard names.  I have had to
resort to a different method than just memorizing by rote- over and over
again.  I finally did a search and found some stuff on mnemonics and have
been trying to apply it's principles.  I find that it might help me
immensely and be fun.  I have made good headway and I have no trouble
maintaining a high level of effort- probably because the concept is so new
to me.  There are 2 complimentary methods that I have tried so far- memory
number pegs to be able to remember randomly where the names occur in the
list, and a story method.  I hope you will excuse the crudity of some of
the logic in the 3 stories.  (I grouped the names in three groups according
to the 3 time segments that Matthew 1:17 indicates)  Wow, what an
experience this is!
I would be interested to hear about anyone else who is using this method
for this type of memorization.  Usually the memory work isn't this bad and
I can memorize just by the usual method of repetition and review till it is
nailed down, but these names are something else and don't lend themselves
to the usual method in my case.
I am glad to be on the list.  I love the Lord.  I love my church.  I love
my family.  I love you all.

The Biblememory list has been in operation now for one year and currently
has 163 members and has had about 600 postings.  For new members, the
archives are posted as text files on my web site at
http://home.istar.ca/~ssimpson/archives.shtml.  I know that we have made a
lot of progress and many people have renewed or discovered and interest in
memorizing God's precious word.

One of the list members has just submitted a post describing a way to
memorize the first 16 verses of Matthew chapter 1.  This type of thing is
called mnemonics. These memory aids or memory tricks can make it easier to
memorize and retain difficult passages of scripture. It can make
memorization a little quicker and make review easier and more certain.

Here is a simple example of a memory trick that can help you remember a
list:

Consider the following verse:

But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage,
malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each
other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have
put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its
Creator.   Col 3:8-10, NIV

I find it easyer to remember the phrase 'anger, rage, malice, slander' if I
think of the word 'ARMS'.  If I write this down with the verse I will see it
each time. Soon it becomes easy to remember.  All lists of things can be
remembered in this way.

Since this list has so many members, I feel we can put our heads together
and come up with a very large list of these helps to memorize difficult to
remember passages.

In preparation for this I plan to send a letter to the list every week or so
outlining a different aspect of memorization using mnemonics.  Many of you
already know a great deal about the subject so I know that you will be able
to make some good comments.  The content will be a genaric 'how to improve
your memory course' and not always be directly related to Bible
memorization. Your task will be to make the application to Bible
Memorization and share it with the rest of us.

What I will ask from the members of the list is to start to share in detail
all of the *memorization tricks* that you have used.  When I say in detail,
I mean give the text of the passage, or reference if it is long, the version
of the Bible you are using and the details of what you have done to help you
memorize it.

If we can do this, I think it will be a great help to us all.

I sympathize with the TV lure.  Even the most insipid, banal fare is served
up with such technical excellence it's riveting.  You might consider doing
what many of us weak folks have done --- pull the plug on the TV and pass
it
along to charity or sell it.

Don't worry about what you'd be missing.  In Paul's admonition to the
Phillippians on what to think about ("whatsoever things are pure, lovely"
etc.) there's not much on TV that qualifies.

I just got done riding the bike for an hour and decided to get on the web
to ck my e-mail.
As I drifted towards surfing the web I decided to find out what was out
there in regards to
the scriptures, memorization, and how I can apply it to my life.
I am very interested in learning, and growing stronger in the Word.

Recently I've learned 2nd and 3rd John.  I find myself having trouble
though
on similar passages, notably in this case the following two passages:
3John 13-14a
I have much to write to you, but I do not want to do so with pen and ink.
I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face.
2John 12
I have much to write to you, but I do not want to use paper and ink.
Instead,
I hope to visit you and talk with you face to face, so that our joy may be
complete.

I find myself sometimes quoting the wrong verse with the book.  I hope this
will go away with time and practice.  Anyone have an idea that has worked
for
them?

I'm also new to this list so it's taken a while for me to read through
loads
of old notes and get a feel for the group. Now that I finally feel that I
know where "we" are at, I guess it's time to introduce myself. My name is
Graham Old, married to Elaine with a two year old daughter Ellie. We live
on
the South Coast of sunny England and attend our local Baptist church.

I joined your list because I've been interested in Memory for about three
years now and I've spent my time memorizing packs of cards, church
directories etc - and then it occurred to me that I could apply these
principles to the Word of God (yes, you're right - I am slow!). I think
Stephen Simpson's idea for sharing our experiences with Mnemonics is a
great
one and I will do my best to dig up some solid examples to share. The only
whole book I've memorized is Philipians but that has been an almost
unbelieveable blessing to me.

Let me start then by recommending the books of TONY BUZAN and DOMINIC
O'BRIEN. Dominic is World Memory Champion and has always been the
inspiration to me and my efforts to memorize - whatever the subject.
Neither men are Christians (as far as I am aware) and both their methods
take some initial time and effort, but in the long run it is more than
worth
it.

Analeace,

I can understand your problem.  TV is too much of a temptation for me.
If I try to unwind by watching it I either get too involved in a movie
and before you know it I've sent an hour or two watching it, or a get so
bored I fall asleep. So I go to my bedroom and shut the door and start
on my memory work. I set a goal of how many verses I want to get down
before going into the room. Once I have mastered thoses verses I feel
free to do something else. Setting goals will help you have more
discipline. You'll not want to watch tv if you haven't met your goals
for the week, and if you have meet them you'll be able to watch tv
without feeling guilty.

My name is Sharon. I am a new member to the discussion group.  I first
started getting serious about memorizing scripture when it was brought
up in our Sunday Evening Bible Study about thee months ago.  We spent
about three weeks working on memorizing selected Bible verses.  However,
some people felt uncomfortable because they said they were unable to
memorize. I found The Scripture Memory Connection Home Page and was
really encouraged.  Even though my Bible Study Class is no longer
memorizing scripture, I have continued to do so and found it to be a
wonderful thing. I am excited to know that there are others who are
committed to hiding God's word in their heart. Stephen Simpson's web
site has been a great help and inspiration to me. I am depending on the
members of this discussion group to help me to continue what I have
begun. God Bless as you feast on His word.

We decided not to get a tv in our house when we got married 18 years ago.
And we haven't missed much haven't we. most people say we didn't

Thanks so much for the the tip.  I have been reading every morning and nite
and it seems to help.  There is one deviontional I just got and it helps a
great dea.
I think I just get overwhelmed so I decided to take a little bit at a time
and
relax.  Then I'll let God do the rest.

I don't know if this will help or not, but what I do when that comes
up, I write up a question and give myself a time limit (usually 30
seconds, or, if it is too long of scripture, 1-2 minutes) to answer it.

One example from Acts that mixed me up is:

1.Acts 9:43     2.Acts 10:6     3.Acts 10:32

"Peter stayed in Joppa for some time with a tanner named Simon"

"He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea"

"Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter.  He is a guest in the
home of Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea."

for those verses I write the question:

3-part quotation question.  Quote the three verses in Acts that tells
about Simon the Tanner.

One more example of verses that got mixed up in my mind is the story
of Saul's conversion on the road to Damascus.  Chapters 9,22, and 26
of Acts give that account using different words.  Again, writing a
question helped me keep them seperated in my mind.

In your case, the question you could study is:

2-Part Quotation Question.  Quote 2 John 12, and 3 John 13-14.

I know that system won't work for everyone but I just wanted to let
you know what I do.

MNEMONICS:

When I first started memorizing I Timothy 2:1,2 I kept getting
supplications, prayers, intercessions and giving of thanks mixed up. Then I
put their first letters together to spell SPIT. Now I realize that it is
not
right to SPIT at " all men, kings and all who are in authority", but it did
do the trick for remembering, in order, the things I really need to do!

discussions on the topic of memorization techniques.

Think about the following and share any ideas you may have as to how it
can
be used for more effective bible memorization.  With 250+ members on the
mailing list, we should be able to come up with a lot of ideas.

Introduction to mnemonics

Mnemonics are methods for remembering information that is otherwise
quite
difficult to recall.

A Mnemonic is a 'memory trick', something intended to assist memory.

The study of mnemonics also involves learning how to organize
information in
such a way that it is easier to retrieve.  With some work, you can
actually
build a structure in your mind to store or file information in such a
way
that it is relatively permanent.

I am convinced that most people do not have bad memories, even when you
grow
older.  Most people have untrained memories.  As with physical exercise,
it
hurts to exert yourself if you are not used to it.  So we back off.  As
time
goes by it gets harder to get into the habit of doing exercise.  The
same is
true when you do not use your memory.

Your memory will become more effective when you start to discover how it
works best.  Your memory works best when you associate something that
you do
not know with something that you already know.  The trick to effective
memorization is learning creative ways to associate information with
other
information.  The best tool you have to create these associations is
your
own imagination.

The following three examples describe a simple way of memorizing a short
list of things.  These things may be items on a grocery list or the main
points of a sermon you are listening to.  The examples are part of a
system
called the peg system of memorization.   Consider the following:

Each of the above list of things is easy to remember because they are
designed to be easy to remember.

Lets say that you have a list of things you wish to remember to buy at
the
store

eggs, Milk, Bread, Peanut Butter, Tin Foil, and Pepper

The above list of things is not easy to remember because the information
is
completely random.  But you can use the lists of words in the three
lists
above as pegs on which you can hang the things you wish to remember.

This is accomplished by using your imagination to associate the well
known
peg word with the new concept you wish to remember.  The mental image
you
create will last quite a long time, and even longer if you periodically
refresh it by thinking it through.  Your imagination is not limited by
normal laws of physics.  Things can be visualized unusually large or
small,
acting strangely, moving in and around other things. Images can use any
of
the five senses  or any type of motion.

For example if you wish to memorize your list of things you need to buy:

1 eggs and gun

Imagine a gun which shoots eggs instead of bullets

2 Milk and shoe

Imaging a child (perhaps yours) drinking milk out of his shoe.

3 Bread and tree

Imagine you going out an picking a loaf of bread from your bread tree

4 Peanut Butter and door

Imagine the knob of the door being covered with peanut butter and you
have
just grabbed it.


5 Tin Foil and hive

Imagine a busy little bee covering the roof of his hive with tin foil

6 Pepper and sticks

Imagine a waiter in a restaurant rubbing sticks together over a salid
thinking the dust coming down is pepper


With these pictures in your mind, you can memorize the list in no time.
You
can even recall any particular item in the list without starting from
the
top. You can use systems like this while listening to a sermon, to
memorize
the main points so you can meditate on what you have learned at a
different
time.


These lists can be expaned as much as you wish by creating a longer list
of
peg words or by re-using thing in a slightly different way.   For
example,
using the alphabet list, you have the peg words Ape, Bee and Sea through
to
Zebra.  When you get through the list you can start over again, but make
sure that the each one of the items is purple (for example).  A purple
Ape,
a purple bee, a purple Sea.  The third time around the items could be
caught
up in the clowds, the forth time around they are spinning round and
round,
etc.

Think about the above and share any ideas you may have as to how it can
be
used for more effective bible memorization.

If you have discovered an easy way to memorize a difficult passage then
share it with the group.  What I will ask from the members of the list
is to
start to share in detail all of the *memorization tricks* that you have
used.  When I say in detail, I mean give the text of the passage, or
reference if it is long, the version of the Bible you are using and the
details of what you have done to help you memorize it.

Each week or two I hope to send out a short discussion on memory
improvement
techniques.  The material I use is based on what I have learned from
various
books and from various web sites that I have found.  As this is all
public
domain information, I generally will not be giving references. I will
however add interesting links to the bottom

I'm eager to learn more about mnemonics utilization as applied to Scripture
memory.  I've not used it before - too dense to notice the connections I
guess.  But I will learn more about it and start using the suggestions I
get
from you.

One thing I have done which has helped me memorize - and maybe it won't
make
much sense to you.  I have often paraphrased certain Scripture In my own
words
as I have studied them and as I have struggled to see the meaning for ME.
When I do that, I get the flow of the material better, and since  I'M the
one
who has written the new words, I certainly remember them.  It seems easy
then
to just translate back into the original and I find it is automatically
memorized!  The first passage I tried in this way - not necessarily to
memorize, but to have the Word speak to me individually, was Psalm 23.
Since
this is such a familiar passage, I found I was just reading words, and
that's
true with many passages we know well.  I paraphrased the Psalm at a
terrible
time in my life, and I needed the Word so badly.  When I did, it bacame
"mine"
in a way that it had never before, and it wasn't just something I had
heard.
And incidently, I noticed that the original words were much easier for me
to
remember.  I tried it with other passages as well, and found this to be
true
in all cases.  At any rate, if it doesn't contribute to memorization, it
will
certainly contribulte to your finding the meaning of the passage.
