Well, I joined the group with no hope at all... I'm OLD, and only know one
scripture, John 3:16, from my childhood. I am working on I Cor. 10:13 now,
then I'll have two. I'm hoping to learn a new verse every 2 weeks.
I did think it was so "interesting" how many times I've had a chance to
apply I Cor.
10:13 this last week. Anybody else have their verses getting extra use
while
they were learning them?
I am so thrilled at the thoughts of you advanced memorizers learning
whole chapters and books!!!! It really spurs me on when I get discouraged.
Thank you so much for this list. -Melody

Hi, folks!
Haven't heard from anyone lately. Have you set any goals for the year in
memory work? I am really enjoying memorizing the Sermon on the Mount
with that group. Was behind but pushed myself in the last 2 weeks to
finish Mat 5. So my goal for 2000 is finishing Mat 6,7. This is the
longest passage I have ever attempted so it is really challenging.
The Lord has been really applying this scripture to my life, though.
Can't believe how rewarding it is to be frequently going over Christ's
words on such important subjects.
I really miss hearing from you all out there. Drop a note real soon!

Hi!
I have been able to improve my computer program as requested by at
least one person who tried it on a previous occasion; the new program now
only requires you to type the first letter of each word for your memory
revision.
Download it from http://www.biblemem.connectfree.co.uk
When you open the zip or self-extracting exe file the new program is
"words.bas" which can be run more elegantly by Windows 95 users using
"Bible

through
the 2:7 Navigator material this year and I have been VERY encouraged as I
review, I meditate, as I meditate I apply. Great truths applied to daily
life. Also, I have been working on Colossians chapter 1 which I started in
April. Very close to completing.
The men in our Discipleship Training on Thursday mornings continue to press
on with their Scriptures. As one fellow who is in his fifties stated that,
he hadn't been as consistent during a particular stretch of time reading
the
Word but he still had the Word on his mind as various truths from Scripture
he had memorized came to his

Press on!

Greetings,
Happy (late) new year to all!
This week marks the end of the second year for the biblemem mailing
list. We have 342 members on the list at this point in time. I am in
the process of reading over the list archives and have been encouraged
by them.
Just a quick couple of questions to drum up some conversation:
1) Has anyone set any scripture memory goals over the last while?
2) Is anyone especially struggling with consistency or is anyone feeling
discouraged and are in need of a prayer or word of encouragement?
3) In what ways has memorizing scripture been helpful to you during
this last year?

Hang in there! It gets easier! Your brain starts learning how to categorize
and
connect information in such a way as to make memory work easier over time.
The
hardest part seems to be overcoming your 'will' in order to do it. I Cor
10:13
was one of the first verses I memorized, too! What a precious gem to have
hidden away in our hearts so that we might not sin {Psalm 119:11}.
Seems like the Lord always puts situations in your path that bring verses
to
mind that you are currently working on, doesn't he? Now that I am plowing
through Mat 6, I am seeing all the charitable works that could be done in
secret, rather than before men. It's like a treasure hunt.
Use your memory work time as meditation time on the verse you are studying
and
get double duty from your minutes. It is amazing the 'jewels' you will gain
from the precious time!
Keep in touch,

Hey everyone, I've set a goal of memorizing the sermon on the mount.
Memory
work is a slow process for me, but the thing i've found that helps the
most,
although it took a little money to start. I bought the New Testament on
audio tape, the same version that I read from and by reading and listening
at the same time it's a lot easier to retain stuff. I wish you all the
best
of luck in your memory work and may God bless you in your efforts to become
better acquainted with His word!

Happy New Year to all...I have decided to begin this year by memorizing the

have been so inspired. So, that is my goal...
I have been having some difficulty in sticking with my memorization, and

wondering if anyone else has come across the same obstacle...If you have
any
suggestions for me, please let me know. I love the Lord and want so much
to
learn of His mannerisms, life, and teachings. I have prayed for renewed
strength to keep pursuing my goal(s), and are open to any helpful pointers.
If anyone has a suggestion for our bible memory group, please bring it
forth.
I know that it will be a lot easier if two or three (or more) of us was
working on the same thing, than trying to go at it alone.
Peace unto all,

being

become rusty because of this. Don't completely lose the past memory work,

just become as I said sort of rusty.
How can I stay motivated concerning review and what are some systematic

Subject: Thanks for allowing me to join your group
From: "LDelbridge"
January 28, 2000
Greetings:
My name is Lee Delbridge. I am 52 years old. I am the minister of Smyrna
Christian Church in Smyrna, Georgia (Metro-Atlanta). I have been the
minister of this church since January 1983 and have been in the full
time ministry since May 1976.
I first began memorizing Scripture in 1970. I paid $1 for the booklet
Treasure Path to Soul Winning by J. O. Grooms from Lynchburg, Virginia.
My first effort was not very successful but when I went to Atlanta
Christian College in 1972 I had to memorize Scripture for some of the
classes. I used Mr. Grooms' method and it worked. I graduated from
Bible college in 1976. In 1979 I set a goal to memorize 1000
Bible verses by topic. I used Mr. Grooms method again. I fell
in love with this method of Bible study. It was a tremendous both
to my spiritual life and to my ministry. The daily memorizing
and reviewing was like a revival every day. I am naturally shy and this
gave me more confidence. It also helped me accomplished another goal.
I had always wanted to preach without notes. Soon after I began
memorizing Scripture, I began preaching most of my sermons without
notes. (I still preach about 60 - 75% of my sermons without
notes.) It took about 10 years to accomplish my goal of 1000 verses.
For the last 10 years I still review my verses 5 days per week covering
the 1000+ verses about every three months.
It is still a high point of my day spiritually. I occasionally memorize
new verses.
I memorize topically. It is easier for me. It seems to also be more
practical because that's the way I need them in my personal life and
in my ministry. I still have the most trouble remembering the long
passage I memorized. The easiest ones to remember are the ones
that I used the most often.
Mr. J. O. Grooms' procedure is copied below.
1. Read aloud the 5 assigned verse separately 5 times in the morning and 5
times in the evening (preferable just before retiring).
2. Repeat the procedure for 7 days.
3. Each time before reading the Scripture verse repeat book, chapter and
verse. (You are memorizing the location with the text.)
4. Second week begin the second assigned group of 5 verses as you did the
first group.
5. The third week do not take a new assignment. Just review the two weeks
assignment. Repeat them until the words flow out of your mouth
effortlessly.
6. The key thought before the Scripture must be memorized.
7. When a lesson is memorized, it should be reviewed once a day for the
next
two weeks so as to retain the verses well enough to call them up to meet
any
need that may arise.
8. Pause after each comma, colon, semi-colon, period and question mark.
I worked out a system of my own to review the verses after I had memorized
a
lot of verses. I went to reviewing some verses once a week, then later
once a month and now one every three months. Keeping them memorized and
"fresh" is the difficult part now.
Scripture memorization is not easy for me but it is well worth the effort.
The results in my own spiritual life and in my ministry far outweigh the
time and effort I
have invested.
Over the years I collected a number of quotes from people about the value
of
memorizing the Bible. I included them in a booklet I wrote about Scripture
memorization and distributed it in my church and to a few friends.
I titled the booklet: Scripture Memorization, the Quickest and Most
Effective Way to Gain A Working Knowledge of the Bible.
I memorize from the New American Standard Bible. The reason I chose that
translation was because I believe it is the most literal English
translation. The NASB
was updated in 1995 which causes a little problem with a few verses. But
the 1995 updated
NASB is more "readable" while still being the most literal translation.
Some of the books that have kept me motivated to maintain my verses are
listed below.
J. O. Grooms' Treasure Path to Soul Winning and Soul-Winning Paradise.
Oscar Lowery's Scripture Memorization for Successful Soul-Winning (out of
pr
int but available from Kregel Used Books at www.Kregel.com)
Dawson Trotman's booklets and the story of his life. (Daws started the
Navigators) Dr. Henry Brandt's Heart of the Problem and The Word for the
Wise
Dr. Brandt wrote in the Heart of the Problem: "I still consider Bible
memorization and application is the single most important aid in my
Christian life and in my counseling."
Charles Swindoll's tape The Strategic Use of the Mind
I join this group for ideas and motivation.
In Christ

Subject: Setting Goals
From: "Lorry Schoenly"
Stephen:
Thanks for providing this list serv as a venue for encouraging scripture
memorization. I have greatly benefited from your work and that of Peter
Reynolds.
My memorization goal for 2000 is to maintain my current memory verses while
learning the Sermon on the Mount. I was able to complete Mat. 5 by the end
of
1999 so I'll need to complete Ch 6,7 in 2000. It is a challenge for
me....my
first major passage of scripture.
The Lord has opened my spiritual eyes to many things while meditating on
the
meaning of the Sermon on the Mount. I am looking forward to even more
enlightenment in the year ahead.
I find that I do best when I am firm with myself about needed to memorize -
no
matter what. I try to temper this with cutting myself some slack when I am
going through a busy period at home, church, or work. It is amazing how
often
the Lord brings to mind pieces of something I'm memorizing and it
encourages me
to press on an really learn the whole passage.
I like to review memory verses during my commute to work and when I must
wait
in a doctor's office or do mindless housework - like vacuuming or folding
laundry. If you snatch these idle moments throughout the day, you can get
in
some quality time without affecting other things.
I look forward to hearing from others of the over 300 people on this list.
SDG,
Lorry

Vicki responds:
A year ago I felt conviction from the Lord that I should 'have an answer
for
anyone who asks me of the hope that lies within' and my family has begun to
memorize Scriptures that relate to salvation issues.
We anticipate that having this list memorized will help us in witnessing
naturally to others, and liberate us from the confines of having to use a
tract. I have found that I don't always have a tract handy during every
conversation, and tracts don't necessarily have all the Scriptures I need.
(This is NOT meant as a put-down of the many excellent gospel tracts in
existence. :-))
As usual, it's taking me much, much longer to get these Scriptures
memorized
than I anticipated, BUT... "little by little gets the job done."
I don't pretend that this list is comprehensive, or necessarily even "the
best" Scriptures on the topic, but I'd be glad to post it for the group if
others are interested.
Warm regards,

Since May I have been disabled and unable to work. My husband also lost his

Also, in May, my daughter accepted the Lord and has been baptized into His

3) In what ways has memorizing scripture been helpful to you during

yes! (Surprise, surprise!) when I first joined the list last january I was
so excited about memorising and ended up with about thirty verses
memorised.
I memorised new ones each week and reviewed the old ones in lots of about
ten each second day. I was pretty good with it for a while too! But then I
gradually stopped reviewing and learning more and was discouraged to find
that I wasn't so good at recalling the verses I had learned previously. But
over the last few weeks I have again taken to learning and I spent a week
or
two reviewing the verses I had learnt previously and found, (to my
pleasure)
that I hadn't totally forgotten the old verses, they just needed a bit of a
memory jog.
I have learnt the books of the Bible (a long needed thing) and have divided
them up into some sort of order (Gen - Deut = law, Joshua - Esther =
history, Job - Song of Songs = poetry, Isaiah - Malachi = promises and so
on
with the NT) and have taken to recalling the number of verses I have learnt
in each section so that I don't forget any.
I think my goal is to memorise verses from each book in the bible. I seem
to
do more OT than NT - I'm not sure why. I sure do love the poetry though -
the beautiful way everything is written so that might have something to do
with it.
When I am in the shower or waiting in lines I can think 'okay so what
verses
do I know from the poetry section?' kinda thing and review them. Also, the
other night when something very scary happened and I was not happy I lay in
bed and constantly spoke the verses over and over again in my head. That
was
a big help (I don't know if it made me any less scared though - but it did
give me something to do)..
Anyway, thanks for the questions,
Robyn xx

finding a deeper walk in Christ. I am a mother of a 12 year old--soon
to be 13 year old boy and I have been married for 14 years. I have
been thinking about memorizing bible verses for a long time and never
really could get into that part of my bible studies. I thought by
joining this group it would motivate me to seriously start memorizing
the bible--that may sound bad to some or it might sound like I really
don't care about learning God's word, but I have been studying the bible
seriously for two years. But I am a procrastinator (and that is a true
problem that I need prayer for) and sometime need motivation to do what
I know I should be doing concerning my studies. Its very hard for me to
learn on my own without classes or deadlines!!
These last two years have been a great years for me in my walk with
Jesus Christ. I've learn so much more in this last year than I ever
have in my whole entire life as a Christian. God got my attention 12
years ago when my son was born and became a paraplegic due to a blood
hemorrhage that compressed his spine which left him paralyzed from the
waist down (there's more to it than that if there are any doctors
reading this message--but its a long story). that brought me to me
knees and let me know how good God was for allowing my son to live. It
was a process, but I now realize that our God is awesome and everything
is for a reason, I became closer to God. But in 1998 is when I really
started to learn more about Jesus in such a why I never knew before!!
through great bible studies at church, Christians programs on the radio
and Christian literature--its amazing how I could live so long and call
myself a Christian and be so ignorant of our Lord!!
I am not sure how this group works but am going to start learning the
bible verse Psalm 119:9-11, its really one that I want my Son to learn
also, I feel that there are so many Christian that know God's word but
don't do what it says.
God Bless and looking forward to joining the group in discussion.

Subject: Hello and introduction
From: "Dykes"
Hi,
I am April Dykes. I am wife to Russell and have two wonderful children,
Justin (13yo) and Hylin (7 yo), both homeschooled. We have been
memorizing scripture, but have gotten "rusty" on some verses. Your
review system on the software looks good. We are working on memorizing
The Gospel of John, specifically chapter 3, any ideas would be
appreciated. We use the small cards similar to your system. We also have
begun to use Scripture Songs, put out by Valliant Recordings
(http://www.scripturesongs.com and http://www.hopenet.org/scrpsong.html)
I look forward to reading your ideas.
Blessings,
April

Subject: A way memorized Scripture helped me
From: "Roger E. Doriot"
On ways memorizing scripture been helpful recently:
At Christmastime, I was asked to speak at a combined Christmas service for
a number of villages in the Nalja tribal area here in Irian Jaya. After I
determined what I would speak on, I found my memorizing of many Scriptures
in the past was very helpful in providing me with many passages that made
contributions to the message. In preparing devotionals and messages other
times as well, I have found a large store of memorized verses and passages
greatly reduces time needed in preparation, and enables me to share more
effectively.
