Hi Stephen:

I could use some prayer. Even though I can quote you every promise in the Bible
and truly believe it with all my heart, mind, and soul, I am entering this New
Year in what seems to be one giant black hole.

I was promised an inheritance. I flew away to get it, leaving my job, and now
there is a lid on it. I am behind in my rent, facing eviction if my landlord
loses favor with me as I have promised him I was getting this money three months
ago.........

So, no job, no husband, and no family to lean on. My two sons, 17 and 22 are
too young to help although they are good prayer warriors.

So, I am entering this New Year on shaky ground praying for a huge miracle in my
life and I am feeling very sad and alone right now. I am praying for a miracle.
I have a wonderful church I love, but there are also spirits there that when
they find out your are down, instead of encouraging me, they
try to pull me down even further (some jealous women there). You can
read,
memorize, etc, etc, but the way to go to God is through prayer. It is all I
know how to do. We are having a New Year's party at church tonight and I am
even too down to go there as I feel more of a dread than a celebration right
now.

I will still praise Him in the midst of my trials, but today, it seems to be
very HARD, but, God, I praise you anyway and know you are a great God and full
of love and mercy. Please send a miracle my way, in Jesus Precious and Holy
Name I pray. Amen!

If you would like to join me in prayer, I sure would appreciate it. I hate to
sound so down as I am usually the most joyful person you could ever meet, but
right now, I am just not seeing any hope right now and the future looks
real bleak for me. But I do believe in miracles so whatever God leads
you
to prayer, I would be eternally grateful.

Thanks and I pray you have a GREAT NEW YEAR FULL OF PROSPERITY AND JOY!

Love in Jesus,

Hi Stephen,

I'd like to share with the group that I just finished Hebrews and am up to
Romans 13. I'd love to finish Romans by February.

How's everyone else out doing?

I am asking for prayers from everyone---I have been diagnosed with a very
serious brain tumor a few months ago related to Agent Orange and have been in
the VA Hospital for 3 months---this has made things a little somber to say the
least during the Holidays. I had surgery to remove much of the tumor (they
could not remove all of it unfortunately).

I have a wonderful family---with a son in the Marines and a son (13) and
daughter (16) at home.

Please pray for me and my healing and my family.

Good morning Sunshine ! I was reading your email this morning and it really
touched my soul as I can remember times that left me crying all night not
knowing what to do or where to go --- while being responsible for a 4 year old's
well being.

The Lord spoke to my spirit as I was frantically searching for
something to say or a scripture of encouragement. HE gave me,
Psalms 37:25 - I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the
righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.

As far as the jealousy goes, I can relate. I currently date a pastor in a
church in my area and every time I visit his church I face it. I face things
that church folk, claimed Christians -- you just wouldn't believe.

But God will take care of you -- you are his -- you are his servant and
everything is in his hands and at his commands -- even Satan!

Hold your head up and focus on him and I will be praying for peace in the midst
of this storm.

I join with you in prayer, you will succeed and prosper. Do not loose sight of
Father and his promises. You will reap the absolute best under the
circumstances.

Again I go to my favourite Scripture which is Psalm 91 in this case Psalm 91v1,2

Psalm 91:1-2
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the
shadow of the Almighty. [2] I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my
fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

Just imagine yourself in the secret place resting in your heavenly fathers hand
no matter the circumstances your in victory so release joy in your life.

This is my prayer for you a quick recovery, and agree with me in the following
Psalm. Psalm 91 is one of the many Psalms I have both meditated and memorised.

Psalm 91:10-16
There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy
dwelling. [11] For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in
all thy ways. [12] They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy
foot against a stone. [13] Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young
lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. [14] Because he hath set his
love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he
hath known my name. [15] He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be
with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. [16] With long life
will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

I encourage everyone to continue memorising the Wonderful Word of God.

Yours in Christ.

Derek

From: Clyde PRICE

Romeo,

There are lots of different things that can interfere with memory work,
including getting older and experiencing physiological changes. Some of these
physical things MIGHT be helped with certain nutritional supplements...

Sometimes lifestyle changes make it hard to study on a regular basis, but there
are things one can do to squeeze in study in the in-between times, especially by
carrying around a "verse pack" of cards (like The
Navigators) with one or two verses of Scripture at a time, to review while in
lines, waiting on hold, riding bus or train, etc. Business cards are a good size
for this, and business-card cases are easy to find. For those of us who need to
write bigger, 3x5" cards work, though a tall stack of them can be inconvenient
to carry around.

Dawson Trotman started out having folks memorize a 1- or 2-verse passage every
day, and nowadays The Navigators encourages people to work through the Topical
Memory System at 2 passages per week. (I've seen another 1-year course from an
organization I didn't recognize that recommended 2 passages a week for a year.)
Find your own rhythm. Some folks try to memorize a chapter every week, but not
many people can maintain that. Review is always a challenge ofter a while. The
BEST thing you can do is to find a "study buddy" or a "coach" to study/recite
with.

In the website in my sig, I have enough "passage-a-day" materials to keep
somebody busy for about 7 years. Two of these are topical, and five in one file
take one through one or more books of Scripture, as much as possible with the
Scripture reference equating with the date. In 2002 I'm working on NASB95
Hebrews (with James "in-between"). Today is Hebrews 1:3. We have Hebrews &
James, Revelation, Romans, 1Cor, 2Cor & more, a course based on R.A.Torrey's
_How To Work For Christ_, and a course based on the Scripture-memory assignments
in Louis Berkhof's _Summary of Christian Doctrine_. There are also a file on how
to use "initials", i.e., the first letters and punctuation from the text as a
learning & review tool, and 2 1-Year Bible Reading Calendars (though I recommend
the one with an OT & NT reading every day). All these resources are FREE.

There are also other organizations, programs, & tools available from other
members of this mailinglist, which I'm sure you'll enjoy looking into.

If you DO choose to employ resources you find on the 'net, especially if they're
provided by a person/organization represented in this mailinglist, I encourage
you to let the source know what you're doing. It's a tremendous encouragement to
those of us who're putting stuff out into cyberspace to get feedback from folks
who're using it.

I read your post out of order, and need to catch up on the other posts to the
mailinglist (post-holidays catch-up!), so what I say in this note doesn't
reflect on what others have said in the thread...

God bless you richly, brother!

Thanks Clyde for your advice and will be trying some of the information on the
net also. I actually started with the Navigators park and was doing very well
until I think I got involved in many things and failing to keep at reviewing
brought me this low. I determined by God's grace to pick things up this year and
will need your prayer support. I will also try and find a mate in this which I
think was one of the things that kept me going.

Thank you and look forward to any ideas that could be of help.

God bless.

Subject: Happy New Year//Re: Romeo B. and all
From: D. Moore

First, Happy New Year to you all!!!! You are a tremendous encouragement to keep
going. Scripture memory is certainly a blessing, but it does involve work.
Knowing that there are others who face similar problems and constraints of time
and just keep going anyway helps to keep me on the straight and narrow! Thanks
bunches!!

Romeo, I like Mrs. McClure's
book, The Sword, available at www.sosministries.org. She is 72 now.
She has quite a bit of material on memory techniques in the book. ---- (The
Sword has just been translated into Russian; it has apparently had quite an
impact on the translator there. An American who works in Siberia is offering to
make the book available in his area of the country, too. The couple who now
directs her ministry on a day to day basis just returned from Kenya where they
spoke at a pastors conference and in several churches. Many there were blessed
by the benefits of Scripture memory. Sometimes I wonder how churches ever got
away from
it.)

Clyde Price, thanks for your wonderful site. I've been downloading many of your
gems. Thanks for making them available to us all.

And Mama Myrna, I love the reports from your church. I wish more churches had
the vision for Scripture memory that yours does. I'd love to be a part of one!
You give me hope that it's a possibility someday in my own.

God bless you Bill, and your family. Even though my husband and I are both
ex-military ourselves, this is not a time in history when I would want my own
son in the military. I'd be proud of him, but I'd be scared, too. Well, that's
a few years away, but it still concerns a mom.

And Stephen, thanks for getting us all together! You bless us all with your
work online.

Happy New Year to you ALL!

Cindy

Hi all,

My name is Bob Phillips, and I have not posted to this list before. I am a
psychologist with the local school system, direct an internet ministry, and
attend a Messianic congregation. I am married and have two children.

One of our members impressed me with his Bible memorization (he has at least
memorized Mark). He got up at service and recited the entire sixth chapter from
memory.

I asked him how he was able to do this, and he responded that the Lord gave us
the means to do so in the Shemah (Deut. 6:4-9).

"And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul,
and with all your might. And have these words, which I command you this day, be
upon your heart. And you shall teach them diligently to your children, and
speak of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you
retire, and when you arise. And you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand
and let them be frontlets between your eyes. And you shall write them on the
doorposts of your house and upon your gates."

Blessings to all, and happy new year.

Shawn,

I was on a language-learning list where some folks were using minidisk recorders
for memory work. I own one or two microrecorders and have thought about using
those, but I found that a standard "Walkman" cassette recorder works well with
the NASB95 NT on cassete set; and
--interestingly-- I'm working on Hebrews (plus James) this year myself. I also
purchased the newly available NASB95 NT on CD, which I intend to listen to upon
going to bed, and go off to sleep with God's Word in my ears. I recently saw in
a retail store a 2-alarm clock radio which also had a CD player on top. I'm
thinking about going back for it so I can also wake up to Max Maclean reading
the Bible to me.

I'm not under any misapprehensions that LISTENING to the Bible on CD or tape by
itself will be enough to enable me to memorize the Scripture, but it could only
help, and the Bible itself speaks a LOT about HEARING the Word.

Hello Bill,

The only thing I'm taking is Ginkgo Biloba Leaf. It is in the Centrum
Performance I and my wife take daily. I have noticed that I tend to forget a
lot, and by taking Centrum, it help's to bring my memory back a little. I hope
that answers your question.

Take Care

Thanks so much---if you have any other ideas please let me know.

Incidentally---I had an accident which apparently aggravated an existing tumor I
was not aware of---which caused all this.

I have lost much of my memory and working to recover from my brain surgery.

Thanks again for your help.

In Christ,
Bill

From: Clyde PRICE

Cindy,

Thanks for the recognition and encouragement. I put in thousands of hours
preparing those etexts and my daily prayer is for God to give fruit.

I'll have to visit sosministries.org and find out more about _The Sword_.
Word-for-word memorization seems to be so "politically incorrect" that it's not
easy to find "how to" material for memorizing Scripture.

It's not completely on-topic, but when I was a child, I had "elocution lessons"
with a very cultured and eccentric lady named Aida DeBray, and was required to
memorize a boodle of poems and recite them with dramatic emphasis (as she
punctiliously coached us in the _proper_ emphasis). I have not heard for many
years about anybody teaching children to MEMORIZE POETRY and recite it in an
interesting way. Children are certainly able to memorize rap-lyrics and
commercials... And showing that MEMORIZATION is a valid, acceptable, and
valuable way to learn can only strengthen in children's minds the fact that
memorizing Scripture is NORMAL!

Today I'm sitting at my desk doing email stuff in spite of the fact that I have
an energy-draining cold (or something). I feel that I've either been busy or
"under the weather" or both since Thanksgiving, but God continues to give grace
to keep going. I ask y'all to pray for my speedy recovery. I have LOTS of "real
world" stuff I need to accomplish in the next week or two.

For myself and for Parakletos Ministries (CDLF's sister/umbrella organization),
I want to begin listing and assembling available resources for individual and
group Bible memorization & meditation. This has long been a strong undercurrent
in my personal ministry, and as the Lord opens doors for more public ministry, I
want to be able not only to TALK ABOUT it, but also birddog folks to where they
can find help.

I have to apologize for "false advertizing" on a couple of items: Without
placing (or evading) personal blame, the etexts & palm-doc files of Louis
Berkhof's _Summary of Christian Doctrine_ and the 365-passage memory course
based on his memory assignments wasn't already up on our website when I had
reported that it was. Very few Christians would totally agree with everything in
the Presbyterian-flavored _SCD_, but the Scripture itself to which LB points is
IMPORTANT and worth careful study, even MEMORIZING, even if one disagrees on
some of his interpretations of the Scripture (as I do on some points). I don't
know how our webmaster will handle the files I've adapted into Palm-DOC files,
but these may well be available from MemoWare.com before we have them on our own
website.

I've recently purchased the Platinum Edition of The Word from Online Bible,
which includes several copyrighted translations, including my "default" version
NASB95. This is not an "endorsement" of this program, as such: I purchased it
because of my past use of shareware versions and my familiarity with it. There
may be other programs "out there" that work better. Once I figure out how to
print specified passages from a specified version into a textfile, I intend to
create Palm files for passages in the "memory courses" for a month or so at a
time... Although I don't think that copyright laws will permit us to distribute
these via the website, unless we can obtain written permission from a given
version's owner. (Unfortunately, the Lockman Foundation has a history of
refusing permissions to folks who want to use NASB publicly... But I'll probably
ASK anyway.)

Has anybody emailed a short Bible passage to a cellphone's text-messaging
function? I plan to experiment with this, and maybe even figure out how to set
up a mailinglist for this purpose.

I haven't YET switched cellphone companies, but Sprint's text messaging never
worked for me the way they said it should (messages cut off before they should
be). I recently purchased a discounted Nextel phone which lists all the
functions I want, but have procrastinated about setting up service and am still
looking at other cellphone providers. I hope this isn't off-topic, but I'd
really LIKE to be able to set up a Scripture-
email- to- text-message routine, at least for myself, and incidentally for other
interested friends.

Although I "print out" very little, and my printer often isn't even working, I
recall in the past seeing folks who photocopied memory passages from large-print
Bibles, and others who printed out from their computer. This certainly reduced
wear-and-tear on their personal Bibles. I've usually gone to the trouble to copy
out my memory passages by hand onto study-cards or sheets, but I'm beginning to
THINK about making more intelligent use of my printer. (I'm particularly
thinking in terms of printing out clear and large-print working-sheets, since I
frequently am not wearing my reading-glasses.)

I'm committed not only to continue with Scripture memory and meditation for
myself, but to encourage other believers to do it too, and consider that this
may be the most important "mission" of my life. I really appreciate the
fellowship and encouragement of this group of Bible lovers!

I pray that God will give you a blessed and Scripture-filled 2002! God bless you
all richly!

From: Andrew Major

I have been woefully resistant to the idea of bible memorisation as a key
Christian discipline since my conversion aged 12, when my walk with Jesus was
launched in that way.

Now at 52 , feeling both ashamed and hopeful, I am under the Lord's conviction
to stand on that ground at last.

I recently restarted NAVpress topical memory system and experimented with the
NASB finding beauty and accuracy (in my untutored judgement)

My prayer is that that this neglected key ( memorisation ) unlocks not only
spiritual growth but brings me into personal effectiveness in my whole life.

I look forward to joining the discussion forum.

After you have memorized some verses or a whole set of verses or whole chapter,
what is the best "system" to make sure what you have memorized, or doesn't get
"lost," i.e. what is the best Review Method to ensure that you will continue to
always remember what you have worked so hard to memorize in the first place?

Many thanks,

It's good to see a fellow Kenyan. I have been on this group for a number of
years now and I have gained a lot of tactics in bible memorization.

Yes, "anyone can memorize", but no one can seem to remember :) Must review for
life.

The review system in MEMLOK remains 5 minutes a day, allowing the user to keep
up with all he learns. So, taking it slow, having a quiet time on each verse you
select in a topic of need - one per week (you can go at any speed, but the
autoreview is one a week), keeps the time daily to 5 minutes. Yea! I'm grateful
to be reviewing the 48 topics/700 verses regularly, yet staying at 5 minutes.

Subject: Brian Janko's Question on retaining
From: James Kephart

Brian,
The Three Thirty Club was set up partially to be sure that people retained what
they had memorized. If you have a memorization club, you will retain the verses
because you will be teaching them to other people, and hearing each other recite
the different meditations, etc. It is a shame to learn verses, then get rusty
on them. My wife has done (recited by memory, word
perfect) all thirty of our mediations, first individually and then all in one
setting. That was 15 years ago, but because she continues to coach others, she
has retained most of it. I would encourage you to get a club going in your
church. By the way, I really appreciate your enthusiasm for memorization of
God's word. Bless you!'

Subject: Another memory convert ....
From: Louise Oosthuizen

Hello Everyone,

My name is Louise Oosthuizen from South Africa (Boksburg) near our Johannesburg
International Airport.

I came accross your website while working out of jesus-is-lord.com and have
received many encouraging e-mails.

This letter is in the form of discipline for myself. I have been wanting to
memorise for some time. Even started a notebook with verses that I want to have
available on call in my head. BUT it lies on my desk, does not go with me, and
I am slack. I look at it, but something is just lacking ... my willpower, time,
fear of not being able to succeed ... you name them, I can come up with a new
one not to start. It is a block.

Now this letter to you is for myself and now I HAVE to learn one verse a week
... for starters, and at the end of each month, have them down pat. For all you
book and chapter memory enthusiasts .. bear with me ... it is only a start.
Please help my with your e-mails; I will let you know which ones I will have
done by the end of this month.

Started with Jn 3:16; Jn 14:16;Jn 3:3. Gen 1: 1-3. I also want to learn the
Fruits of the Spirit Gal 5:22-26 (also 16-21). Then on the other hand I want the
history on my tongue for e-call at will -- the creation
- Day 1 etc, the aposteles, just history in general. Some of you surely have the
same ambition; please share it with me.

Greetings to you all who love the Lord

Louise.
