From: Willfrid Janzen

Hello fellow Christians:

My name is Willfrid Janzen and I am a new member to this group.
I am recently married and thank the Lord for His wonderful and good provisions.
It has been my desire for some time now to learn more of God's word through
memorization.
I look forward to hearing about different techniques that would aid me in this.

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.(Phil.1:2)

Subject: Greetings
From: "Johnny Shepherd - Durango, CO."

My name is Johnny Shepherd. I like others have a constant struggle with
"keeping" scripture for long perids of time in memory. I am glad to be
part of this Email list. I was born in 1943, saved since the age of 15,
served for 20 plus years in the ministry full time and love the Lord
with all that is within me. I am married, live here in Durango, Colorado
and hold down two jobs. I am a proctor parent for a youth service here
in Durango and I am a Case Manager for a youth service in Farmington,
New Mexico - about 50 miles from here. I enjoy Email lists, like the WWW
because of the capabilities of communicating with other brothers and
sisters ALL over the world. I have authored a paper called "The Church
in the Year 2,000 and How They Will practice the presence of God. The
main presupposition is that God is active, interactive and intervening
in our lives in the context of the now. I have been using the internet
to get it out to others free of charge. I look forward to a great
experience here on bible memory Email list

In His loving service,
Johnny

Greetings to everyone! I am also new here but excited to see what comes
out of this list! I am a college student studying chemistry, planning
to go on to med school and eventually be a doctor missionary. Just this
week I realized that I was not memorizing scripture and didn't know where
to begin really, in order to develop a long-term system. Then I received
word about this list so I am eager to be a part of this, may the Lord use
this list to work in each one of us and enable us to grow closer to Him!

Subject: Memorization w/music
From: D G

Hello,
I had heard that Alzheimer patients' memories seem to hold for
songs they learned in their youth. Though I am only 36 and my memory
is fine, I am looking for as many hymns as possible based on the
verbatim use of scripture as the lyric. It seems this would be a
wonderful way to memorize scripture as well as maintain memorization.

It's me again. Going along with this, something that might be of interest,
I believe that Integrity Music (Hosanna?) has some scripture CD's and
tapes available. Might be something to look into...

Subject: Greetings in Our Saviors Name
From: "Bob Welch"

Hi,

My name is Bob Welch, age 61, married, three grown children and five
grandchildren from Waterville, Maine. I assemble together with other
believers to the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ at the Gospel Hall in
Augusta, Maine.

I was saved late in life, but God has given me a hunger for His word that
never stops. I have gone through the Navigators Scripture Memory Course
and now am trying to memorize 1 John. I'm sure there are many helps for us
who would desire to memorize His word. My little experience is to
review,as often as possible, what we have memorized and try and find
someone who we can be accountable to in our endeavors. I, myself, can use
all the help and encouragement I can get. I would also like to encourage
my brothers and sisters in Christ as you labor in His word. "Therefore, my
beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work
of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the
Lord."

Because of Christ,

Bob Welch

Hi! My name is Dale Foster. I live in Houston, Texas, where for the past
13 1/2 years I have been a minister at the church of Christ in Jersey
Village. I have also worked with other churches of Christ in Texas as
well as Arkansas and Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. I began fulltime
ministry in September, 1962.

Since 1986 I have been involved in teaching the Bible and preaching the
gospel in India. My thirteenth trip is scheduled for this March.

I have been memorizing Scripture since childhood. My main method is
repetion. After a time it just seems to stick. I find memorized
Scripture extremely useful in preaching as well as in general Bible
discussions.

My wife of 38 years, Sharon, is an RN. We have two married daughters and
four grandchildren (3 boys and 1 girl). We have a Dalmatian named
Gabriella.

God bless you all.

Greetings to my brothers and sisters in Christ!!

My name is Anna Hupper. I'm 36, married for 18 years, have two children
ages 13 and 9 and live in Solon, Maine (pretty close to you Bob!!) My
family and I attend Faith Evangelical Free Church in Oakland.

Memorizing scripture is something I have always wanted to do but like
John, I never actually took the steps necessary. Recently I went into
training to join my Church's "SWAT" team (Spiritual Warfare and
Triumph), memorization of certain scripture plus on going memorization
was a requirement. It was amazing to me that I was able to accomplish
this, not on my own but with God's help!!! I found that the computer is
especially helpful for ongoing review of what I have hidden in my heart.
I would love to someday memorize the book of Colossians!!

I look forward to keeping in touch will all of you and one day meeting
each one of you in Glory!!!

Subject: Re memorization
From: "Stephen Simpson"

Here's my introduction.

I'm a Marriage and Family Therapist in California.

More importantly, I've been memorizing scripture for about 20 years. God has
consistently blessed me in my discipline of memorizing large passages of His
Word (goal of 20 verses per week).

I've put together and implemented a "Challenge" program for our high school
kids (which helped to motivate some kids to get involved in Bible
memory/meditation) and am just now attempting to get our small group
involved in memory/meditation work.

My goals for this list include:

1) deepening my practical skills in BOTH memorizing and meditating upon the
Word;

2) communicating with others concerning advantages and pitfalls of this kind
of work;

3) creating new tools for use in small group and other church ministry to
facilitate others' success in this sort of task.

I look forward to hearing from others on the list, both privately and
through the list.

hi, my name is judy. i grew up in a very bible-oriented group with an
intellectual bent. among other errors, this group denied that Jesus is God.
after hearing the testimony of one who meditates on large sections of
Scripture, i decided to do the same. the last thing i expected was to have
the errors uprooted, because i thought i had "the truth." how gracious is our
God! His Word is so powerful, "sharper than any two-edged sword," and speaks
Words of Life. i am in awe every day of this great deliverance. i had so
much "head knowledge" -- a lot of truth but polluted with subtle error -- and
now rejoice to count it all as worthless for the excellency of Christ! still,
the Word endures even though the counsels of the "heathen" are brought to
nought. praise the name of Jesus, our Savior, Lord and God!

My name is Lasse Lukka. Born in Finland 1953. A Christian since 1971. =
Now I live in Denmark. I have a wife Karin (a dane) and we have a =
daughter, Anne, who is 13 years old. I'm a carpenter and at the moment =
unemployed. Due to my back problems, reschooling is being planned with =
the community. As I have great interest in computers and some experience =
in DTP it could be something in that direction. Time will tell.
=20
I learned to memorize scripture (Topical Memory System TMS) in a =
Navigators biblestudy group in Finland( -73). I memorized the first 36 =
topics (3 verses/topic). =20
Later I drifted away from christian fellowship for some years, (also 9 =
years in the THEN cultlike Worldwide Church of God, WCG).=20
When I left the WCG (-95)I didn't have much christian fellowship. In  =
-97 i began attending a small church (members come from the Lutheran =
state church, Pentecostal and other backgrounds) in my local area.=20

I believe there are many areas of my life where God wants to make =
changes. I also believe that memorizing and MEDITATING scripture are =
very strong tools for that purpose.

My FIRST goal is to refresh and relearn the  TMS verses i mentioned. I =
have started by printing some of them on businesscards (Avery L7413 =
which works on both Laser and Inkjet).

SECOND goal is to start an organized scripturememory group in the =
church. I have learned that at least two members of the church, have in =
the 70's been involved with the Navigators ministry in Copenhagen. They =
both have memorized scripture, and I hope to have them to help me to =
reach that goal.

Please pray for me that I can stay motivated in reaching these goals.

I have a template for WordPerfect 6.0a and am working on one for
WordPerfect 8.0, if anyone's interested. It's really very easy. You can
either run cardstock through your printer, or print it on ordinary paper
and have your local print shop copy it onto cardstock.

Subject: BibleMemory: Administrative Message
From: "Stephen Simpson"

Greetings,

For those who are new to the list, welcome.

At this point the biblememory list is about two weeks old and has about 80
members.

This is an email discussion list. What this means is that if you reply to
this email, or any other email from the list, it will be sent to all other
subscribers.  This will happen whether you push that 'reply to all' or the
'reply to author' button on your mail reader program.  I suggest that you
end all messages you send to the list with your name and email address so
people can email you directly if they wish.

I am writing this to you to see if we can drum up any discussion on the
topic of Bible Memorization.

Some people have shared that they get frustrated because they find that they
cannot seem to remember the verses they memorize for very long.  This has
always been a issue for me as well.   I think that this is often a matter of
technique.  Our memories have to be properly trained through use and we have
to give a high enough priority to review.  Nevertheless, some people do have
better memories than others.  But remember that it is not those who learn
the most scriptures who are the winners, it is those who internalize what
they have learned.

Sometimes I personally feel like a man who has been given the task of
filling a large tank with water using a wicker basket.  I fill up the basket
and no matter how fast I run, it is almost empty when I get to the tank. It
seems that it will take forever to fill that tank and I feel like quiting.
Later I realize that the reason I was given the task was not to fill the
tank, but to have a clean basket.  The task we have been given is to develop
a pure mind and a pure heart.  Constant exposure to the word of God will
accomplish this, even if we cannot recall it later.  When we learn the word
of God and make it a point to meditate on it, then it will accomplish its
task in our lives.

Meditation on the word we have memorized is actually extra review and helps
to lock it into our minds

I found that I memorize things I hear. So, I make a tape by saying my verses
over and over. New verses I say a phrase at a time so they have more time to
sink in. Review verses I just record the whole thing, repeated a few
times. Then I play my tape whenever I'm in the car. Just going to & from
work, I get about 5 hours in during the week. That's plenty of thim to
learn a few new verses and review 5 or 6.

I hope this helps,
