My name is James Long and I began a personal relationship with Jesus in about 1992, my sophomore year of college. I am currently involved in ministering to college students on the campus of the University of Kentucky. My life vision verses are 2 Tim 2:2 and Matt 6:33. I am working on developing a small team of like hearted men who have a vision to reach the world through Jesus' vision of spiritual multiplication (2 Tim 2:2). Jesus has been, as of late, working with me on the principle of application of the verses he has shared with me through memorization and in my personal quiet times with Him. The objective is to be a doer and not just a hearer of the Word and in the process deceive myself. Enough about me, lets talk scripture memory... Lasse Lukka mentioned the Navigator TMS of the late 1970's. The current Nav TMS is not the "original" 108 passages that Lasse referred to. Since this original is so nice I have put it in a MS Word 97 table that prints out very nice on card stock. I then cut up the card stock and laminate the cards. These are excellent. I would be more than happy to e-mail this to those who are interested. For a small fee ($20 US) I can print these on card stock, laminate them and mail them to you. The fee is just to cover the cost of printing, laminating, etc. One of my visions to help myself and others is to take this TMS and create picture images for each verse. This is much like the company Memlock http://www.memlock.com/ does with their verses. I had pictures for almost half of the verses and then a computer crash (I now back up often) cost me the whole thing. I would be interested in working with some people who would like to assign pictures to the TMS. Respond in person, not to the list, if you are interested in either the "old school" TMS or the project of putting word pictures with the TMS (108 verse version). The reality of memorizing Scripture is to understand it takes effort over= a period of time until the words are "second nature," and then, you must= review periodically in order that the verses you have mastered are lost.= There are, of course, some of us who have been gifted in this area and = find it very easy to memorize. Let them be an encouragement for the rest= of us : ) "But I am not spending enough time in the Word." How much time is enough= ? Often, we start reading the Bible with unrealistic expectations, or = worse, we undertake the same reading program as another person, not takin= g into consideration the differences between us (i.e., is he/she married = with kids, work full time, mature in the faith, retired, etc). There is = NO EXCUSE for not organizing our daily lives so that we can spend quality= time in the Bible. Really, it's the same as physical fitness. I see teenagers at my local = YMCA trying the same program as some of the more advanced folks. And for= a while they can keep up, but eventually they are discouraged by their = lack of progress - they overtrained. May I suggest for anyone wishing = to begin reading the Bible that they start off slowly. I have found that= the excitement and need to read God's Word will grow on us over time, = and the guilt of not "spending enough" time will be replaced by the joy = of spending time with Him. Pick a time in the day (morning, mid-day, eve= ning) and establish a realistic purpose and stick with it ! Over time, = your daily lifestyle will become accustomed to this new "element" that = you have decided is worthwhile to undertake. As a father of two young children, with a full-time job & overtime commit= tments, mid-week Bible study, YMCA weight training program, and all the = other "life" responsibilities and pressures, I have found daily Bible rea= ding rewarding enough to make the time. I encourage anyone with a busy = lifestyle to consider what's eternally important, understand the differen= ce between urgency and importance - spend time with God. All the other = things - family, work, church, family & friends, and yourself (hobbies) = - are all important to God. Let Him, through His Word, help you make the= most out of each of these important aspects of your life. As part of The Navigator's introductory study, the student is expected to memorize five key verses. Each day for about a week I would review a verse during the work day (kept it on top of my computer). It's helpful to breakup longer verses in order to properly memorize. Try not to memorize using different translations unless you are able. Hello, Mark, All! I am the 30-year-old father of four (3 girls, 1 boy). I am also a computer programmer developing software for precision Agriculture. My goal for this year is to memorize the Gospel of John. Pretty big goal considering I've never memorized an entire book of scripture before, but I think it is possible. I just need to hit some milestones, and I'll have it! I have memorized some long passages in the past, so this is not just starting from square one. Here is my strategy for memorizing long passages of scripture. If anyone has any suggestions or comments, fire away! I. Pre-memorization: Establishing a Framework First, I read the passage several times to get an overall feel for the pattern of the writing. Of course, this is easier to do with narrative sections of scripture. I read the passage from different Bible versions, trying to make note of any differences in translation. Of course, this delays the start of memorization, but I think that it offers some advantages: 1. Before I begin memorizing, I have an overview of the entire passage. Knowing the overall pattern helps to provide mental "cues" later when actual memorization begins. 2. I am able to retain mental "footnotes" about differences in translation as I memorize the Scripture. II. Beginning Memorization Next, I commit myself to a single version of Scripture for the memorization. I print out a copy of the passage (usually a single chapter) without verse numbers and chapter headings. Since my goal is memorization of long passages, I am not interested in memorizing these numbers (If I want to find a specific reference for a verse later, I can always look it up quickly since I know which chapter it is in). Then, I read through the entire passage a couple of times out loud. This offers several advantages: 1. I SEE the words in front of my eyes. 2. I HEAR the words with my ears. 3. SPEAKING the words allows my physical body to be involved. III. Concentrated Memorization At this point, I have a very good overview of the entire passage. So now, I break the passage down into smaller pieces based on some logical division of the passage. I concentrate on one piece at a time. I do all my reading out loud. Gradually, after quite a bit of repetition, I wean myself off reading the passage from the page. During the "weaning" phase I allow my eyes to "cheat" by returning to the page from time to time. This allows me to catch and rectify my errors quickly. After an hour or two of this, most of the passage is memorized (although there may be some "details" missing; for example, remembering something as "He said" instead of "He replied"). I then spend some more time getting the "details" correct. IV. Practicing Transitions By now, the passage is mostly memorized, but may be very fragmented in my memory. So now I spend some time determining which verses are "transition verses". Since I memorized the passage by breaking it down, I need to learn what the transition is from one piece to the next. Working on the transitions "glues" the broken pieces into one complete passage. First, I concentrate on just the verses around the breaks that I made; then, I recite them until it feels like there is less of a break. For quite a while afterward, the transitions feel slightly awkward when reciting. But by knowing the transitions, each section becomes a springboard into the next section. Gradually, the feeling of "breaks" in the text disappears. The same process is used for remembering transitions between passages. V. Review The process above allows me to memorize the Scripture very rapidly (steps II-IV above typically take about 2-3 hours for me to memorize an entire chapter of Scripture -- in short term memory). The key to long-term retention is review. I review in several ways: A. Pattern Review I spend time reviewing the general "pattern" of the Scripture. This is most helpful when memorizing narrative or the epistles, and less helpful when memorizing the Proverbs. I try to make up a title for each "section" (sort of like the titles above passages in some Bibles). B. Transition Review I spend time quickly reviewing the transition verses ONLY. C. Duplication Review I try to duplicate the Scripture as I have memorized it. I do this sometimes by RECITING (having a recorded copy of the Scripture is helpful for this, since you can hear your mistakes easily); other times, by WRITING the passages and comparing what I have written to the actual text. Duplication review is important to help you remember the details, the word-for-word text. It helps to have a schedule for review, or at least a general idea of how to do it. The idea is to review FREQUENTLY while you are learning the text, then less frequently after it is more familiar. I don't obey this schedule exactly, but the general idea helps: For the first week, review the passage at least ONCE a DAY. For the first month, review the passage at least ONCE a WEEK. For the first year, review the passage at least ONCE a MONTH. In practice, I find I have to review a little more often than this in the beginning to retain long passages of Scripture. =============================================================================== Date: Tue, 20 Jan 1998 08:31:18 -0600 Subject: Introducing . . . me From: David Weis Greetings and solicitations! This is my obligatory intro. HELLO, this is me, is that you?!? Ya ya, I'm funny, but mom says not to be proud about that, after all, looks aren't everything. Thanks mom. A little personal information may be in order. I became a Christian in 1979 when I was a freshman at Oklahoma State University. I now live in Tulsa, OK, and no, I don't really know the Hansons! Not that well anyway. But tell your kids they are pretty regular folks, and no, in real life these boys don't look like girls. BTW, they just had added another sister to the clan named Zoe. I got involved in an offshoot of the Navigators called Insight Ministries about two years after becoming a Christian. I spent the next several years doing scripture memory, door to door evangelism and small group Bible studies. I have since developed a serious "Bible Jones". For those of you who were not into Cheech and Chong in the old life, that means I just can't get enough of the Book. But I digress . . . I still fellowship with the same group of people who made up the core of that campus ministry. I am 36 and have known some of these people now for over 15 years. We eventually started to marrying each other and now we are running our own school and educating our children together. I count myself extremely blessed to have been added into such a community of believers who love for and care for each other as we do. Perhaps you have guessed from the tone of my writing that these are an especially patient group. They certainly have been with me. ;-) I am glad to be in a discussion group with some similarly affected Bible junkies. Bless you. Smith" Self-Introduction to the Bible Memory List: I became a Christian when I was baptized in 1963. The atmosphere of the 1970's caused the Sunday School teachers and youth workers to give up assigning memory work, so I arrived at adulthood knowing only my phone number by heart! I have always loved to read the Bible since childhood, but I never knew any of it by heart until recently. I teach, among other subjects, foreign languages. Experimenting with different teaching methods, I noticed that some of the more successful ones involved various forms of memorization. In addition to lists of vocab words, I began to assign poems for my students to memorize by heart. It occured to me that this skill could be used for something much more valuable than secular poetry. I began to memorize hymns. Several months ago, I found a box in my basement containing a Navigators memory kit. It had five groups of twelve verses (60 verses total). I had gotten it as teenager and never used it. I decided that I would get my money's worth out of that kit after 20 years! Now I am almost done with all the verses. I agree with many of you on this list that it is better to learn extended passages than isolated verses. When I'm done with this kit, I want to tackle some extended passages. I'd like to know the first several chapters of the Gospel according to Saint Mark by heart, and some Psalms. My hope and prayer for younger people is that they can do some memorizing while their brains are still much better at it. I wish I had done memorizing in my teens. The only thing I learned by heart then were rock'n'roll lyrics, which don't have a whole lot of benefit later in life. I use flash cards, I write verses out long hand, and I say them out loud. I also use the SMS software which the owner of this list developed, and I find it quite good. I'm married with one child. A.C. Smith" One unexpected blessing which was given to me through memorization was an insight into English grammar. I noticed that some passages use the word "might" and others use the word "may". Now, in everyday speech, we often use these interchangeably. I thought that if I could learn the difference between them, it would help me memorize better. Consider: (a) There might be a penny in my pocket. (b) There may be a penny in my pocket. The grammatical difference is that "may" is a present-tense, and "might" is a past tense, and because English uses its past as a subjunctive, it also functions that way, too. Consider: (c) "...in order that He might bring us to God." This is past tense, because Jesus already did that. (d) "...that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father..." This is present tense, because it is about the life we are living now. Once I understood this difference, it was much easier to remember which was which in a given passage. A.C. I often used other words in a verse to help me remember a phrase like that. For example (and I'm making these verses up...) "In order that we may overcome." If I remember the verse as "*o*vercome" in it I can remember that the phrase starts with "in *o*rder that" This works for some people while it confuses other people. Take it one chapter, one section, or one paragraph at a time. It gets discuraging when you you keep thinking about having to get through such a large amount. 2) After memorizing a chapter for the first time you WILL forget parts of it. Sometimes so much that you almost feel like you never learned it. I think it's almost better to learn a chapter, put it aside for a few days and then re-learn it like you did before. After that you can start reviewing it. I like what Eric Nielsen said about reviewing the Trasitional verses...that can really help if you learned in chuncks. If you do want to have some idea of what the verse numbers are in a chapter (I'm someone who likes the know the reference for every verse), you may want to try learning the refrences to only the Trasitional verses. Sometimes if it looks overwhelming from the start I will back off and put less on, just because I don't want to defeat myself before starting. Besides, the whole idea is to put the word in my heart not to race anyone at memorizing the most. That's why when I first started I memorized the verses I liked the best--just a select few favorites. Then I began to build into larger chunks at a time, then into chapters. If you know that you get intimidated by looking at a card full- then it would make sense to cut it back. Even the work of putting the verses on the cards helps to memorize! I also read the verses out loud and review, review, review. I really liked the comment made by someone who said they read the text or chapter over and over to get a feel for it. That was wonderful! It reminded me of going to a precept class and the approach taken to studying the Word. By the way Suzanne, I have six kids and I'm in need of some fresh motivation. I'm also a single mom now in school full time and I would appreciate prayer for the Lord to help me keep what's really important in top priority. I think putting His Word in my heart--fresh and new--is something I can't live without, just as prayer is. One thing I have found though, once I have memorized a section "it is there", I have it and though it might fade some, it will come back easily with review. Our work is not in vain! The URL is ftp://bob.ca.uky.edu/memory/biz_card.dot . This file is a simple template for business card size cards. It has styles set for the reference, verse body, and topic. (If you have Word97 and do not know about styles, look in the help file for "styles") You can ftp from your web browser, or use an anonymous ftp web client. I will be more than happy to place other files here on request. James Long At 08:14 AM 1/26/98 -0600, you wrote: >As many of you have said before, I started with the Topical Memory >System. From:ew C Smith) I have a template for WordPerfect 6.0a and am working on one for WordPerfect 8.0, if anyone's interested. It's really very easy. You can either run cardstock through your printer, or print it on ordinary paper and have your local print shop copy it onto cardstock. ********* This message was sent to you by A.C. At this point the biblememory list is about two weeks old and has about 80 members. This is an email discussion list. What this means is that if you reply to this email, or any other email from the list, it will be sent to all other subscribers. This will happen whether you push that 'reply to all' or the 'reply to author' button on your mail reader program. I suggest that you end all messages you send to the list with your name and email address so people can email you directly if they wish. I am writing this to you to see if we can drum up any discussion on the topic of Bible Memorization. Some people have shared that they get frustrated because they find that they cannot seem to remember the verses they memorize for very long. This has always been a issue for me as well. I think that this is often a matter of technique. Our memories have to be properly trained through use and we have to give a high enough priority to review. Nevertheless, some people do have better memories than others. But remember that it is not those who learn the most scriptures who are the winners, it is those who internalize what they have learned. Sometimes I personally feel like a man who has been given the task of filling a large tank with water using a wicker basket. I fill up the basket and no matter how fast I run, it is almost empty when I get to the tank. It seems that it will take forever to fill that tank and I feel like quiting. Later I realize that the reason I was given the task was not to fill the tank, but to have a clean basket. The task we have been given is to develop a pure mind and a pure heart. Constant exposure to the word of God will accomplish this, even if we cannot recall it later. When we learn the word of God and make it a point to meditate on it, then it will accomplish its task in our lives. Meditation on the word we have memorized is actually extra review and helps to lock it into our minds Comments? I've tried sticky notes in the car, index cards, etc. Any suggestions and all ideas would be appreciated. Rusty Shelton rustysgte.net =============================================================================== Date: Sat, 31 Jan 1998 21:00:29 -0600 (CST) Subject: Re: Sv: BibleMemory: Administrative Message From: Frank Ruth I found that I memorize things I hear. So, I make a tape by saying my verses over and over. New verses I say a phrase at a time so they have more time to sink in. Review verses I just record the whole thing, repeated a few times. Then I play my tape whenever I'm in the car. Just going to & from work, I get about 5 hours in during the week. That's plenty of thim to learn a few new verses and review 5 or 6. I hope this helps, -FrankR On Sat, 31 Jan 1998, Rusty and/or Rene' Shelton wrote: > I have a great deal of difficulty with memorizing and would appreciate > any techniques that others use to memorize verses.
