Hi there I am new to the list my name is Dixie I am a stay at home mom of 3
wonderful children. I am a navy Wife. Right now we are currently stationed at
tinker airforce base in Oklahoma. We are here until April 2002. Then it is
between MD, Va, and Fla. I am a new christian. I got baptized ad saved in
February 2001. I have been getting frustrated so much lately because I can't
seem to remember what I read or where to find certain verses. I know it is not
possible to memorize every verse in the bible but I would like a closer
relationship with God. And I honestly feel in order to do that we need scripture
memorization and knowledge of his word.

Thank you,
I hope to talk to you all soon,
love ya,
Dixie

Dear Bev

Here are a couple of things you can do to make scripture memory more exciting.
1. Always have your work with you. If you can copy it and put it on a single
sheet of paper, that is best. You can keep it in the car or beside you. Last
week when I took my daughter to the dentist, I had an hour and a half to work on
memorization. (I hate those magizines they have) I took my sheet of memory work
and went out on the sidewalk, and used the hour and a half productively. 2.
Get someone to coach, or listen to you, often. That will give you positive
feedback and when God's word is spoken between two people, God will use it in
wondeful ways.

Jim Kephart

Greetings Navy Wife!

This is my first time responding to this group, I just joined the group, after
finding the articles on SM...

What I did as a new believer was to memorize the verses of the gospel
illustration that I was given. I had a sheet of paper with the verses on them,
so I had the references with me.

Actually, the first verse I memorized was the recommendation of the guy that
lead me to the Lord, and it was 1 John 5.11-12. A great verse of assurance.

What has helped me in SM is to write the verses out and include the reference
before and after the verse. I also have a topic that I assign each passage I
memorize. For instance, my recent verse is Hosea 6.1-3, the topic I gave it was
"The Foundation of Prayer: God's Invitation to us." (This may seem long, but it
corresponds to a B/study I recently did on the subject.)

I write the verse on little cards that are small enough to carry with me. I then
can whip them out whenever I have the time. (Like at the grocery, or in the car
at a light, or walking around the block...)

Hope this helps...

In His Grip,
Keith

New Christians are always in a hurry. I know I was, but a new or baby
Christian is just that "new" "a baby" who has to start from scratch just
like any new baby does. We start with the "milk" of the word not strong meat...

1Pe 2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sin ye may grow thereby:

Hbr 5:12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that
one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are
become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

Hbr 5:14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those
who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Be patient with yourself, it will come with time & a sincere heart. Just be
diligent.

Pro 13:4 The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul
of the diligent shall be made fat.

Stay honest with God & yourself & He will bless your efforts. Love in Him, Dee

Hi Y'all!

I'm new to this list, but I downloaded and have glanced over most of the
archives, and saw a bunch of interesting stuff, some of which I want to respond
to. I've been a believer for over 30 years, having trusted Christ my senior year
in high school, and started memorizing Scripture pretty early on. I did most of
my memory work in NASB77, and don't particularly like the changes made in
NASB95, and I'm experiencing acute English Bible Translation Frustration. I may
continue with the efforts I started on to "upgrade" my memory work into the
NASB95 "Update", but I'm open to the idea of switching to the not-yet-completely
released Holman Christian Standard Bible, or maybe something else. For now, I'm
mostly reading quickly in other translations, and praying for God's leading
about what to do.

While I still had a "checker" (i.e., someone to read along while I was reciting,
correct & prompt), using "initials" (the first letters of every word in the text
plus punctuation), I had recited most of the NT, Psalms & Proverbs in NASB77,
but haven't had a "checker" since the early 80s, and have grown increasingly
fuzzy in terms of word-for-word recall. Also, now that I'm in my late 40s, I'm
finding that word-for-word memorization takes more work than it used to.

I'm still committed to memorizing and meditating on Scripture myself, and
encouraging others to do it too; and I'm delighted to have found this group of
people who're interested in the same thing.

There's a file available from the website in my sig about the use of "initials"
as a tool to memorize larger blocks of Scripture. For folks who want to learn
shorter passages useful in witnessing and counseling, also on the CDLF website
are _The Divine Art of Soul Winning_ by J. Oswald Sanders, and _How To Work For
Christ_ by R.A.Torrey; both of which represent RICHES for those who would learn
how to use Scripture in a PRACTICAL way to deal with people. There are also two
different 1-year Bible reading schedules appropriate for individual or
congregational use.

I'm looking forward to enjoying the fellowship in this group of Scripture
lovers! God bless you all richly!

Heidi, When we first become a Christian-we are so excited and want to know it
--memorize so much so soon-take it easy -it will come-God gives us as much as we
can handle bits by bits-I found out if you put one memory verse a time on your
refrigerator or somewhere you pass often-you will get it -then go to another
one-Hugs and love ya, Linda
