always done my Scripture memory by rote, which has worked fine, but I'm
wondering if I can memorize more verses over a shorter time period by using
pictures.

For example:
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

-        Mt. 5:5
Today I would memorize this by repeating it over and over.  However, after
a
recent study of mnemonics I wonder if it might be better to attach pictures
to the above verse.  Perhaps I would place a picture of a child for the
word
'meek' and a picture of the earth for the word 'earth'.
If anybody has any insight using such an approach especially re: existing

David, I took a memory course at one time that used those kinds of techniques
for things like memorizing grocery lists etc. I am sure that you could use it
to memorize scriptures but might make it more work in the long run because you
have to remember the exact wording as well as the pictures not just what they
refer to. One method that was suggested to me was using the same numbers of
scriptures. For example memorizing the 25's
    - the twenty
fifth verse of selected chapters. Anyway let me know how it goes.

    Hi David,

I am close to 60ys and I have been studying and learning all my life.

All of a sudden I "found out" that back in history when there were no comps and
no books - people had to memorize.

The Roman politocians had to memorize the speeches of the others without beeing
    able to take notes

Their own speeches they had to memorize as well.

As a student you could not afford expensive papyrossi- you had to memorize what
the teacher said, you had to memorize what you found out.

Our brain is phantastic - we have not lost the ability of memorizing - but the
amount of information we think we should have at hand has increased incredibly.

The average human beeing uases 10% of his brain.

All the rest is used subconsviously. Imagine what huge amount of information has
to be processed to be able to drive a car - not thinking of all the information
which has to be processed to move the car from A to B in our traffic nowadays.
The question is - how did the people do it in former days.
They had memorizing systems. And I would sure like to get hold of one of these
    systems.
On the othe hand - how do people memorize all the stuff they stuff themselves
    with?
It is naturally a question of beeing intersted and of joy and of outcome.
We are humasn - we are individuals and as individual we are when we are sick -
our diseases are individual diseases. Doctors like to treat diseases and tend to
forget that the disease is as individual as the human.
So you have to find out the way you memorize best.
But !!! when you use different methods you memorize more easy.
    Discover your own abilities.
To do so discover the senses you have - discover the senses you use mostly.
When you train other senses in memorizing than you use most frequently in daily
life, it can become very exciting to memorize. and then you memorize a lot
    faster.

I test myself by writing the first letter of each word and then checking it when
I finish. When I memorize a chapter (which takes months with my busy schedule),
I put it on tape and listen on the way to work. Saying it out loud is very
important. Of course, review is necessary or it is lost. I have found that I
remember long passages for years whereas I remember verses only for a short
time. That is because it takes so long to learn them.
    So,
don't worry if it takes a long time to learn; you'll remember it longer.

P.S. I'm on my way to China to "teach English." I really want to share Christ
with as many as possible. I can use all the prayer I can get or it will be a
wasted trip. Please pray for understanding (language) and prepared hearts, and
opportunities not to be missed. Thanks!

    Hi, My name is Jim.
I have tried several times before to introduce myself, but because of computer
problems on one end or the other have not been able to.
I'm a native Montanan, now living in Missouri. I first began scripture
memorization in the early '70s after being born again.
I started out with the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew, chapters 1-3 of John, and
Ephesians. Recently I've worked on Hebrews, 1 Peter, Jude, Phippians,
    Colossians, and Galations.
I have no special techniques...just a lot of repetition and review. My goal is
to memorize as much of the New Testament and Proverbs as possible before I die
or the Lord comes! Since I'm 50, perhaps I started too late!!
Would enjoy communicating with some of you. Jim

    Subject: The Bible and Memory
    From: David Harvey

Hi Dr. Troendle and others at Bible Memory,

Vasas los? Thank you for writting me. I am an American living in Odessa,
Ukraine with my Russian wife and we adopted her 2 year old grandson as our son.
I am 50 years old, so you are not much more older than I. Through my son I am
learning and remembering all over again vacariously. I am trying to learn
Russian, Greek and memorize some Bible verses so I can live a Godly life and
maybe after I learn to speak some Russian, bear fruit for God. My mother was of
German descent with the name of Greathel or Gretel.

I study many things about the Bible including some programs online for free that
you may be interested in: e-Sword Bible program at www.e-Sword.net with over 60
Bibles in many languages, The Sword Project at www.crosswire.org, Bible
Knowledge Accerator is a really informative Bible history program that tells of
those times with great pictures and maps, which you can find online with a
search engine. Then there is the Interlinear Scriptural Analysis program which
can also be found online with a search engine. I do not know about German, but
the English Bible translators sometimes used 30 different English words for one
Greek word, this is not the best way to learn subject well. Surely this
confuses the issue and the meaning of God's Word, so I like the ISA which does
provide a new Greek New Testament with 3 NT Bible versions that are word for
word more accurate. One Greek word is always translated with the best one
English word. There are no real direct translations, but some are better than
others in transliteration of the Bible and it is there I want to choose the
oldest and best literal transliteration of the Bible. Then I did find several
Bible memorization programs to help me memorize verses: Inverse, Bible Memory
2000, Lamp Lite, Scripture Memory System which can be found at
    www.freechristiansoftware.org.

I have read that cultures that did not write had a fantastic memory of their
tribal histories going back thousands of years and it is true we do not use our
memories to the extent we should. It is like a muscle and must be stretched and
trained. I am sure the ancients had some sort of mnenomic systems to remember
all that they had to know. I am sure had I live back then I would have been a
scribe or priest or a writer as I love books and letters so much.

I do know this as an insomniac due to back injury and fibromyalgiac that if you
don't get good sleep, your short term memory is severly limited.
If your short-term memory is limited, that directly impairs your future
long-term memory. Regular exercise and a good diet also help your memory as I
used to work for the Ohio Dept of Health before I retired from work at 35 years
due to back injury. That if you still use your memory as Toast Masters do their
speeches or Bible Memorization you will put off effects of Alzenheimers Disease.
So there is much to be said of the value of Bible memory.

I have often wondered what do we do with the other 90% of our brain?
I have studied he brain online and we have a large frontal lobes as we are
mostly visual and this is most certainly connected to our memory by means of
visualization. I hardly ever remember what I hear, but am a very visual person
and prefer to memorize by that means. This may account for why we have smaller
portions of our brain dedicated to hearing and speech. It is odd, I can
recognize a song or a film I have seen before within 5 seconds, so this is the
means I must use in order to memorize things, but I have a real hard time
remembering the name of a song or movie, the actors names or the title. The
    plot I almost always recall.
However having said all that, we should try to use as many inputs, visual,
aural, writing and oral to memorize things as much as possible as the more means
of input the better the output and memory.

Our minds have a difference in treating short-term memory and long-term memory
as well. Perhaps this is why we spend 30% of our lives sleeping so we can
organize this information into long term memory. Suffering from fibromyalgia
which prevents stage 4 Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, I have noticed a loss of
short-term memory and that makes it difficult to put things into long-term
memory. So I have a hard time remembering peoples names without hearing and
saying them many times. When I treated my fibromyalgia with hydorcortizone
injections, my fibromyalgia went away, I slept better and my memory greatly
improved so I have proven my theories on this on myself. Now I sold my car to
come to Ukraine and I am walking 10 miles or 6.2 km two or three times a week in
order to cause better circulation. Our brains use 80% of our oxygenated blood
supply, so it is best to improve this as much as possible and it helps one to
sleep better as well, these actions improve our memory.

Just moving from Ohio to Odessa two plus years ago, I had to radically change my
diet from canned and fast foods to fresh fruits and vegetables.
I lost 60 pounds or 27 kg, my 20/450 vision improved to 20/200 and I am no
longer diabetic. So now I have joined a sports club and want to get in better
physical shape after my heart attack in 2001 which caused hypotrophy or
enlargemen of my heart, my goal is to lose 40 pounds or 18 kg more. I am sure
that this will have an effect on my heart, which affects high blood pressure and
that affects memory drastically and sleep directly. I noticed that most
Ukrainians are extremely physically fit. I believe that is because the do not
eat processed foods and are not subjected to 5 minutes of food commercials 4
times per hour as Americans do and then get up to eat all day long. That is why
I think most Americans are so fat. Not to mention how this takes away time from
worshipping God and spending quality time with family and friends. It is no
wonder that without God and quality time with family that American spiritual
values and their good health have departed them.

Ukrainians and Russians have a lot to teach the Americans in many of these
regards. I also lived in Japan and England so I have some comparisons to base
these ideas on. I have not been to Germany yet but would love to do so one day.
WELL, I wrote a book, but I hope I did not bore you with my ideas on how to
improve our lot in life and our memory, especially as regards Bible
    memorization.

    Sincerely,
    David Harvey
