Hello All!

I am James Dorman, a pastor who has recently become very convicted about =
memorizing Scriptures. I have started with verses concerning the Word =
of God itself and that is making my conviction and commitment grow even =
more. I look forward to the discussions and the mutual support we can =
offer each other as we hide God's Word in our hearts..

Welcome to the List!

Just wanted to say that some time ago I was convicted by Scripture about
Itself of the importance of memorizing Scripture. Those were the first
verses that I undertook as a program of memorization to "hide in my heart".

When a pastor quotes Scripture from memory instead of always having to
read,
it says to me that pastor LOVES the Word.

Peter, I would love to memorize passages with you. I am afraid to admit
that my level of retention is not equal to that of my enthusiasm.

I will wait to hear from you.

Subject: New to list
From: "Scott, Allison, Joshua & Jacob"

My name is Scott Norwood and I am a librarian working for the USAF in
Suffolk
County, England. A few months ago I read the archives for this list and
have
been lurking for most of a month. I have really enjoyed and learned a lot
about
memorizing the Word from this list.

I have been working at relearning the verses I learned in my youth (I am 44
now). I have recently chosen the "Sermon on the Mount" as my first major
project. If anyboy else is working on this I would love to hear from them -
or
from anyone with any suggestions as to how to memorize any particular piece
of
it.

My sons (ages 7&8) took part in Awanas for the first time this past year -
beginning this fall I will be helping with the Awana group at the base
chapel
and learning verses along with the kids, so I will be accountable to the
kids
for those verses.

In the meantime - thanks so much for all the postings to this listserv as
they
have been a real encouragement to me toward disciplining my self toward
"hiding
the word in my heart."

Gosh I would like to see us use the list to challenge each other to
memorize
specific scriptures each week. Then share are success's and keys learnings
from the experience.

An Advanced
Scripture Memory Program

by
Greg Herrick, Th.M.
greghbible.org

Introduction

Earlier in the year the BSF web site posted a scripture memory program
to help people get the word of God into their lives. It
was well received and for that reason we have chosen to expand it and
include more verses on a broad range of topics. There
are approximately 200 verses covering broad areas of theology and
ministry. We hope you learn a ton and enjoy the material!

Let me reiterate a few comments I made about scripture memory in the
last program we offered. These are important and worth
repeating:

First, memorizing the Bible is one of the best ways to "get the Bible
into your life" on a daily basis. The moments spent in
memorization and meditation pay off rich dividends in your relationship
with God, with others in the body, and indeed in
explaining the gospel to those who have not yet heard. I have personally
seen the lives of countless people, including myself,
enriched as a result of Scripture memorization and meditation. Second,
some people want to memorize, but often fail as the
result of lack of a plan. The following is an attempt to provide a
plan/structure for Scripture memory. Third, seek God in prayer
for the strength and the discipline to memorize his word. Find a friend
and the two of you encourage each other to memorize
verses. Fourth, when memorizing a verse, diligently read the context
before and after in order to correctly understand what the
verse means. I like to write out in a sentence or so, how a verse
relates to its context (i.e., the paragraph or book as a whole).
Fifth, repeating the verse aloud several times immediately after
memorizing will help you retain it. Sixth, prayerfully reviewing a
few of your verses daily will help you to remember them for present and
future use. Seventh, meditate on the word of God as
you memorize it, asking God what he means by the verse in its context
and also what he wants to communicate to you through
the verse. Prayerful meditation will lead to personal application which
in turn, if done in a personal and honest way, leads to a
deeper spiritual life and increased love for people. This is the goal of
Scripture memory.

The outline below is composed of ten sections: I) The Bible; II) God;
III) Jesus Christ IV) The Holy Spirit; V) Angels VI) Man
and Sin VII) Salvation VIII) The Church IX) End Times; X) The Gospel.
These categories are generally recognized as
providing an organized structure for the main areas of scriptural
revelation. Within each one of these sections we have a further
breakdown, though more could be added. There is, nonetheless, enough
material here to keep a person going for a long, long
time. A few of the verses have been repeated a couple of times in the
outline. If you come across a verse that you had
previously memorized under a different category, try to understand what
it is in the verse that allows it to stand under this new
category as well. Many verses contain a lot of information that cannot
be exhausted under a single category heading.

People often ask the pace at which a person ought to memorize verses.
The best idea is to go at a rate that is manageable for
you, but also challenges you to keep learning. For most people, the best
plan is perhaps one or two a week. Generally
speaking, I have placed two verses under each of the following
sub-categories, though obviously the Bible has many verses that
could be listed. By memorizing two and understanding their contexts you
can complete one topic per week and begin the
exciting process of comparing Scripture with Scripture. (There are
enough verses here, at the rate of two per week, to
memorize for about two years!! So have fun!)

I. The Bible

A. Its Authority

1. Matthew 4:4

Jesus answered, "It is written: ‘Man does not live
on bread alone, but on every word that
comes from the mouth of God."

2. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for
teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in
righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be
thoroughly equipped for every good work.

B. The Need To Study and Meditate on the Bible

1. Psalm 1:2

But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on
his law he meditates day and night.

2. 2 Timothy 2:15

Do your best to present yourself to God as one
approved, a workman who does not need to
be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of
truth.

C. Scriptural Examples of People Studying and Obeying God’s
Word

1. Ezra 7:10

For Ezra had devoted himself to the study and
observance of the Law of the LORD, and to
teaching its decrees and laws in Israel.

2. Acts 17:11

Now the Bereans were of more noble character than
the Thessalonians, for they received the
message with great eagerness and examined the
Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said
was true.

II. God

A. He is Creator

1. Genesis 1:1

In the beginning God created the heavens and the
earth.

2. Revelation 4:11

You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory
and honor and power, for you created all
things, and by your will they were created and have
their being.

B. He is a Trinity

1. Ephesians 1:3 (The Father is God)

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ who has blessed us in the heavenly
realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ

2. Hebrews 1:8 (The Son is God)

But about the Son he says, "Your throne O God will
last forever and ever, and righteousness
will be the scepter of your kingdom."

3. Acts 5:3-4 (The Spirit is God. See below under IV. A.
1)

4. Deuteronomy 6:4 (His Essential Unity; there is only
one God)

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.

C. His Power

1. Jeremiah 32:17

Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and
the earth by your great power and
outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.

2. Romans 1:20

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible
qualities—his eternal power and divine
nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from
what has been made, so that men are
without excuse.

D. His Knowledge and Wisdom

1. Jeremiah 10:12

But God made the earth by his power; he founded the
world by his wisdom and stretched out
the heavens by his understanding.

2. Romans 11:33

Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and
knowledge of God! How unsearchable his
judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!

E. His Presence

1. Jeremiah 23:24 (God is omnipresent)

"Can anyone hide in secret places so that I cannot
see him?" declares the LORD. "Do not I fill
heaven and earth?" declares the LORD.

F. His Sovereignty

1. Ezekiel 12:28

"Therefore say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign
LORD says: None of my words will be
delayed any longer; whatever I say will be
fulfilled, declares the Sovereign LORD.’"

2. Ephesians 1:11

In him we were also chosen, having been predestined
according to the plan of him who works
out everything in conformity with the purpose of his
will

G. His Love

1. Psalm 33:18

But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him,
on those whose hope is in his unfailing
love

2. 1 John 4:10

This is love: not that we loved God, but that he
loved us and sent his Son as an atoning
sacrifice for our sins.

H. His Holiness

1. Exodus 15:11

Who among the gods is like you, O LORD? Who is like
you—majestic in holiness, awesome
in glory, working wonders?

2. Revelation 15:4

Who will not fear you, O Lord, and bring glory to
your name? For you alone are holy. All
nations will come and worship before you, for your
righteous acts have been revealed.

I. His Faithfulness

1. Lamentations 3:22-23

22 Because of the LORD’s great love we are not
consumed, for his compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning; great is your
faithfulness.

2. 1 Corinthians 1:9

God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son
Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful.

J. His Immutability (God does not change)

1. Hebrews 13:8

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and
forever.

2. James 1:17

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming
down from the Father of the heavenly
lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

III. Jesus Christ

A. His Deity

1. Hebrews 1:8

But about the Son he says, "Your throne, O God, will
last for ever and ever, and righteousness
will be the scepter of your kingdom."

2. John 1:1

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with
God, and the Word was God.

B. His Humanity

1. Luke 2:52

And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor
with God and men.

2. John 1:14

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among
us. We have seen his glory, the glory of
the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of
grace and truth.

C. His Crucifixion

1. Mark 15:24

And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes,
they cast lots to see what each would get.

2. John 19:18

Here they crucified him, and with him two others—one
on each side and Jesus in the middle.

D. His Resurrection

1. Acts 2:24

But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from
the agony of death, because it was
impossible for death to keep its hold on him.

2. 1 Corinthians 15:20

But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the
firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

E. His Exaltation

1. Acts 2:36

Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has
made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both
Lord and Christ.

2. Ephesians 1:18-21

18 I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be
enlightened in order that you may know the
hope to which he has called you, the riches of his
glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and his
incomparably great power for us who believe. That
power is like the working of his mighty
strength, 20 which he exerted in Christ when he
raised him from the dead and seated him at his
right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all
rule and authority, power and dominion, and
every title that can be given, not only in the
present age but also in the one to come.

IV. The Holy Spirit

A. His Deity

1. Acts 5:3-4

3 Then Peter said, "Ananias, how is it that Satan
has so filled your heart that you have lied to
the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of
the money you received for the land? 4
Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And
after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your
disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing?
You have not lied to men but to God."

B. His Personality

1. 1 Cor 2:11 (He Thinks)

For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except
the man’s spirit within him? In the
same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the
Spirit of God.

2. Ephesians 4:30 (He Feels)

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom
you were sealed for the day of
redemption.

3. 1 Cor 12:11 (He Acts cf.; we will learn this verse
under the work of the Spirit in gifting
believers, but go ahead and memorize it now if you like).

All these are the work of one and the same Spirit,
and he gives them to each one, just as he
determines.

C. His Work

1. In Revelation and Inspiration

a. 2 Samuel 23:2

The Spirit of the LORD spoke through me; his word
was on my tongue.

b. 2 Peter 1:20-21 (cf. also Acts 1:16; 1 Cor 2:13;
2 Timothy 3:16)

Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of
Scripture came about by the prophet’s
own interpretation. 21 For prophecy never had its
origin in the will of man, but men spoke
from God as they were carried along by the Holy
Spirit.

2. In Creation

a. Genesis 1:2

Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was
over the surface of the deep, and the
Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

b. Psalm 104:30

When you send your Spirit, they are created, and you
renew the face of the earth.

3. In the Life and Death of Christ

a. Luke 1:35 (His Virgin Birth)

The angel answered, ‘‘The Holy Spirit will come upon
you, and the power of the Most High
will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will
be called the Son of God.

b. Acts 10:37-38; Matthew 12:28 (Empowerment for
Ministry and Miracles)

37 You know what has happened throughout Judea,
beginning in Galilee after the baptism
that John preached—38 how God anointed Jesus of
Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and
power, and how he went around doing good and healing
all who were under the power of the
devil, because God was with him.

c. Hebrews 9:14 (His death)

How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who
through the eternal Spirit offered himself
unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from
acts that lead to death, so that we may
serve the living God!

4. In the Church

a. 1 Corinthians 12:13 (His Baptizing)

For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one
body—whether Jews or Greeks, slave or
free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

b. 2 Corinthians 1:21-22; Ephesians 1:13 (His
Sealing)

21 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand
firm in Christ. He anointed us, 23 set his
seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our
hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to
come.

c. 1 Corinthians 3:16 (His Indwelling)

Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple
and that God’s Spirit lives in you?

d. Ephesians 5:18 (His Filling)

Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery.
Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

e. 1 Corinthians 12:11 (His Gifting)

All these are the work of one and the same Spirit,
and he gives them to each one, just as he
determines.

f. His Sanctifying Work (cf. Romans 15:16; Galatians
5:16; but see under Salvation below)

V. Holy and Fallen Angels

A. Holy Angels

1. Daniel 12:1 (cf. Job 38:6-7)

At that time Michael, the great prince who protects
your people, will arise. There will be a
time of distress such as has not happened from the
beginning of nations until then. But at that
time your people—everyone whose name is found
written in the book—will be delivered.

2. Hebrews 1:14

Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve
those who will inherit salvation?

3. 1 Timothy 5:21

I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus
and the elect angels, to keep these
instructions without partiality, and to do nothing
out of favoritism.

B. Fallen Angels

1. Demons

a. Ephesians 6:12 (Led by and carry out the Devil’s
wishes)

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but
against the rulers, against the authorities,
against the powers of this dark world and against
the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly
realms.

b. 1 Timothy 4:1 (They teach false doctrines)

The Spirit clearly says that in later times some
will abandon the faith and follow deceiving
spirits and things taught by demons.

c. 1 Samuel 16:14 (God uses demons for his own
purposes)

Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul,
and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented
him.

2. Satan

a. Ezekiel 28:14, 17 (His nature and fall)

14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I
ordained you.

You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among
the fiery stones… 17 Your heart
became proud on account of your beauty, and you
corrupted your wisdom because of your
splendor. So I threw you to the earth; I made a
spectacle of you before kings.

b. Job 1:12 (God controls him)

The LORD said to Satan, "Very well, then, everything
he has is in your hands, but on the man
himself do not lay a finger."

c. John 8:44 (He is a murderer)

You belong to your father, the devil, and you want
to carry out your father’s desire . He was a
murderer from the beginning, not holding to the
truth, for there is no truth in him.

d. 2 Corinthians 4:4 (The god of this world)

The god of this age has blinded the minds of
unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of
the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image
of God.

e. James 4:8 (He can be and must be resisted by
Christians)

Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash
your hands, you sinners, and purify
your hearts, you double-minded.

f. 1 Peter 5:8 (He is our enemy)

Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil
prowls around like a roaring lion looking for
someone to devour.

g. 1 John 5:19 (The whole world is under his
influence)

We know that we are children of God, and that the
whole world is under the control of the evil
one.

h. Revelation 12:3 (He is compared to a dragon in
terms of his fury)

Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous
red dragon with seven heads and ten
horns and seven crowns on his heads.

VI. Man and Sin

A. Created by God

1. Genesis 1:26-27

26 Then God said, ‘‘Let us make man in our image, in
our likeness, and let them rule over the
fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the
livestock, over all the earth, and over all the
creatures that move along the ground." 27 So God
created man in his own image, in the image
of God he created him;

male and female he created them.

2. Psalm 139:13-14

13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me
together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise
you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful, I know that full
well.

B. Fallen and Sinful

1. Romans 3:23 (All have fallen)

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of
God.

2. Ephesians 2:1-2

1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions
and sins, 2 in which you used to live when
you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler
of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is
now at work in those who are disobedient.

3. James 3:9

With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and
with it we curse men, who have been
made in God’s likeness. (Since James says that men
after the fall are still made in the likeness
of God, it follows that sin has not totally effaced
God’s likeness or image in man.)

VII. Salvation (Grace underlies all that God does in our salvation)

A. Election

1. Acts 13:48

When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and
honored the word of the Lord; and all who
were appointed for eternal life believed.

2. Ephesians 1:3-4

3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, who has blessed us in the
heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in
Christ. 4 For he chose us in him before the
creation of the world to be holy and blameless in
his sight.

B. Calling

1. Romans 1:6

And you also are among those who are called to
belong to Jesus Christ.

2. 1 Peter 2:9

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a
holy nation, a people belonging to God,
that you may declare the praises of him who called
you out of darkness into his wonderful
light.

C. Believing Apart from Good Works

1. John 1:12

Yet to all who received him, to those who believed
in his name, he gave the right to become
children of God

2. John 5:24

I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and
believes him who sent me has eternal life and
will not be condemned. He has crossed over from
death to life.

3. Ephesians 2:8-9

8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through
faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the
gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can
boast.

4. Titus 3:5

He saved us, not because of righteous things we had
done, but because of his mercy. He
saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal
by the Holy Spirit.

5. Romans 4:5 (read entire chapter and 5:1ff)

However, to the man who does not work but trusts God
who justifies the wicked, his faith is
credited as righteousness.

D. Justification

1. Romans 5:1 (cf. Romans 3:21-26)

Therefore, since we have been justified through
faith, we have peace with God through our
Lord Jesus Christ

2. Galatians 3:24

So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ
that we might be justified by faith.

E. Redemption

1. Ephesians 1:7

In him we have redemption through his blood, the
forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the
riches of God’s grace.

2. 1 Peter 1:18-19

18 For you know that it was not with perishable
things such as silver or gold that you were
redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to
you from your forefathers, 19 but with
the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish
or defect.

F. Propitiation

1. Romans 3:25

God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement,
through faith in his blood. He did this to
demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance
he had left the sins committed beforehand
unpunished—

2. 1 John 2:2

He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not
only for ours but also for the sins of the whole
world.

G. Reconciliation

1. Romans 5:10

For if, when we were God’s enemies, we were
reconciled to him through the death of his Son,
how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be
saved through his life!

2. 2 Corinthians 5:19-20

We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God
were making his appeal through us.
We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to
God.

H. Security

1. John 10:28-30

I give them eternal life, and they shall never
perish; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s
hand.

2. 2 Corinthians 1:21-22

21 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand
firm in Christ. He anointed us, 22 set his
seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our
hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to
come.

3. Romans 8:30

And those he predestined, he also called; those he
called, he also justified; those he justified,
he also glorified.

I. The Spiritual Life

1. The Holy Spirit

a. Two Positive Commands

i. Ephesians 5:18

Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to
debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

ii. Galatians 5:16

So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not
gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

b. Two Negative Commands

i. Ephesians 4:30

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with
whom you were sealed for the day of
redemption.

ii. 1 Thessalonians 5:19

Do not put out the Spirit’s fire;

2. Faith

a. Romans 4:20-21

20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding
the promise of God, but was
strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21
being fully persuaded that God had
power to do what he had promised.

b. Hebrews 11:6

And without faith it is impossible to please God,
because anyone who comes to him must
believe that he exists and that he rewards those who
earnestly seek him.

3. Love

a. John 13:34-35

34 A new command I give you: Love one another. As I
have loved you, so you must love one
another. 35 By this all men will know that you are
my disciples, if you love one another.

b. 1 Peter 1:22-23

22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying
the truth so that you have sincere
love for your brothers, love one another deeply,
from the heart. 23 For you have been born
again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable,
through the living and enduring word of
God.

4. Daily Forgiveness

a. 1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and
will forgive us our sins and purify us from all
unrighteousness.

b. Colossians 3:13

Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances
you may have against one another.
Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

5. Humility

a. Philippians 2:3-4

3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain
conceit, but in humility consider others better
than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only
to your own interests, but also to the
interests of others.

b. James 4:10

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift
you up.

6. Good Works

a. Galatians 6:9-10

9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the
proper time we will reap a harvest if we
do not give up. 10 Therefore, as we have
opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially
to those who belong to the family of believers.

b. 1 Peter 2:12

Live such good lives among the pagans that, though
they accuse you of doing wrong, they
may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day
he visits us.

7. Dependence on God

a. 2 Corinthians 1:9

Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death.
But this happened that we might not rely
on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.

b. 2 Corinthians 12:9

But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you,
for my power is made perfect in weakness."
Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my
weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may
rest on me.

c. 1 Peter 5:7

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for
you.

J. Ministry

1. Obedience

a. John 14:21

Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the
one who loves me. He who loves me will
be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and
show myself to him.

b. Philippians 2:12-13

12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always
obeyed—not only in my presence, but
now much more in my absence—continue to work out
your salvation with fear and
trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will
and to act according to his good purpose.

2. Preaching the Gospel

a. Acts 1:8

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit
comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in
Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the
ends of the earth.

b. Romans 1:16

I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the
power of God for the salvation of everyone
who believes: first for the Jew, then for the
Gentile.

3. The Great Commission

a. Matthew 28:19-20

19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and
teaching them to obey everything I have
commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to
the very end of the age.

b. Colossians 1:28-29

28 We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching
everyone with all wisdom, so that we may
present everyone perfect in Christ. 29 To this end I
labor, struggling with all his energy, which
so powerfully works in me.

3. Using One’s Gifts to Serve the Body

a. Romans 12:7-8

7 If it is serving, let him serve; if it is
teaching, let him teach; 8 if it is encouraging, let him
encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of
others, let him give generously; if it is
leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is
showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.

b. 1 Peter 4:10

Each one should use whatever gift he has received to
serve others, faithfully administering
God’s grace in its various forms.

VIII. Church

A. Universal and Local

1. Colossians 1:18 (The universal body of Christ)

And he is the head of the body, the church; he is
the beginning and the firstborn from among
the dead, so that in everything he might have the
supremacy. (Here the church is viewed as a
single entity of which Christ is the head.)

2. 1 Corinthians 1:2 (A local expression of the universal
church)

To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified
in Christ Jesus and called to be holy,
together with all those everywhere who call on the
name of our Lord Jesus Christ—their Lord
and ours:

C. Leadership

1. Acts 20:28

Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of
which the Holy Spirit has made you
overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which
he bought with his own blood.

2. Acts 14:23

Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each
church and, with prayer and fasting,
committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put
their trust.

3. 1 Timothy 3:1-13 (Know the context well and choose a
verse or two that helps you understand
and remember the passage as a whole.)

1 Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his
heart on being an overseer, he desires a
noble task. 2 Now the overseer must be above
reproach, the husband of but one wife,
temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable,
able to teach, 3 not given to drunkenness,
not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover
of money. 4 He must manage his own
family well and see that his children obey him with
proper respect. 5 (If anyone does not know
how to manage his own family, how can he take care
of God’s church?) 6 He must not be a
recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall
under the same judgment as the devil. 7
He must also have a good reputation with outsiders,
so that he will not fall into disgrace and
into the devil’s trap.
8 Deacons, likewise, are to be men worthy of
respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and
not pursuing dishonest gain. 9 They must keep hold
of the deep truths of the faith with a clear
conscience. 10 They must first be tested; and then
if there is nothing against them, let them
serve as deacons. 11 In the same way, their wives
are to be women worthy of respect, not
malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in
everything. 12 A deacon must be the
husband of but one wife and must manage his children
and his household well. 13 Those who
have served well gain an excellent standing and
great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.

4. 1 Timothy 5:17

The elders who direct the affairs of the church well
are worthy of double honor, especially
those whose work is preaching and teaching.

5. Titus 1:7-9

7 Since an overseer is entrusted with God’s work, he
must be blameless—not overbearing,
not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not
violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. 8
Rather he must be hospitable, one who loves what is
good, who is self-controlled, upright,
holy and disciplined. 9 He must hold firmly to the
trustworthy message as it has been taught, so
that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and
refute those who oppose it.

D. Ordinances

1. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 (The Lord’s Supper—cf. also
Luke 22:15-20)

23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed
on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he
was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given
thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my
body, which id for you; do this in remembrance of
me." 25 In the same way, after supper he
took the cup, saying, This cup is the new covenant
in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it,
in remembrance of me. 26 For whenever you eat this
bread and drink this cup, you proclaim
the Lord’s death until he comes.

2. Matthew 28:19 (cf. Baptism—cf. also The Great
Commission above under VI.J.2.a)

IX. End Times

A. Three Foundational Covenants in the Old Testament

1. Genesis 12:1-3 (Abrahamic Covenant)

1 The LORD had said to Abram, ‘‘Leave your country,
your people and your father’s
household and go to the land I will show you. 2‘‘I
will make you into a great nation and I will
bless you; I will make your name great, and you will
be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who
bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and
all peoples on earth will be blessed
through you.

2. 2 Samuel 7:12-16 (Davidic Covenant)

12 When your days are over and you rest with your
fathers, I will raise up your offspring to
succeed you, who will come from your own body, and I
will establish his kingdom. 13 He is
the one who will build a house for my Name, and I
will establish the throne of his kingdom
forever. 14 I will be his father, and he will be my
son. When he does wrong, I will punish him
with the rod of men, with floggings inflicted by
men. 15 But my love will never be taken away
from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I
removed from before you.
16 Your house and your kingdom will endure forever
before me; your throne will be
established forever.

3. Jeremiah 31:31-33 (New Covenant)

31 "The time is coming," declares the LORD, "when I
will make a new covenant with the
house of Israel and with the house of Judah. 32 It
will not be like the covenant I made with
their forefathers when I took them by the hand to
lead them out of Egypt, because they broke
my covenant, though I was a husband to them,"
declares the LORD. 33 This is the covenant I
will make with the house of Israel after that time,"
declares the LORD. "I will put my law in
their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be
their God, and they will be my people.

B. Inaugural Fulfillment of the Covenants through Christ and
in the Church

1. Luke 24:44 (Christ’s Coming, Death and Resurrection is
integral to the fulfillment of his plan)

He said to them, "This is what I told you while I
was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled
that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the
Prophets and the Psalms."

2. Acts 13:32-33 ("What God promised the fathers," i.e.,
the Jewish people, he has fulfilled—but
not entirely yet)

32 We tell you the good news: What God promised our
fathers 33 he has fulfilled for us, their
children, by raising up Jesus.

3. Acts 1:6-7 (The implication that in this verse is that
there is still more fulfillment to come in
regards to the nation of Israel; cf. Romans 11:25-32)

6 So when they met together, they asked him, ‘‘Lord,
are you at this time going to restore the
kingdom to Israel?" 7 He said to them: "It is not
for you to know the times or dates the Father
has set by his own authority.

4. Acts 3:22-23 (There is still more to come concerning
Christ’s reign on the earth)

19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins
may be wiped out, that times of refreshing
may come from the Lord, 20 and that he may send the
Christ, who has been appointed for
you—even Jesus. 21 He must remain in heaven until
the time comes for God to restore
everything, as he promised long ago through his holy
prophets.

5. Colossians 1:13-14 (The kingdom is present, but not
consummated)

13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of
darkness and brought us into the kingdom of
the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the
forgiveness of sins.

C. Complete Fulfillment of the Covenants in the Millennial
Kingdom

1. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 (The Rapture of the Church)

16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven,
with a loud command, with the voice of
the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and
the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After
that, we who are still alive and are left will be
caught up together with them in the clouds to
meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the
Lord forever.

2. Matthew 24:21 (Great Tribulation)

For them there will be great distress, unequaled
from the beginning of the world until
now—and never to be equaled again.

3. Romans 11:26-27 (The Regathering of Israel)

26 And so all Israel will be saved, as it is
written: "The deliverer will come from Zion; he will
turn godlessness away from Jacob. 27 And this is my
covenant with them when I take away
their sins."

4. Revelation 20:4 (The Millennial Reign of Christ and
His Saints—Church and Israel. Pay
careful attention to Revelation 20:1-10. See also
Revelation 5:10)

D. Future Resurrection and Judgments

1. John 5:28-29 (All men will be resurrected and judged)

28 Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming
when all who are in their graves will hear his
voice 29 and come out—those who have done good will
rise to live, and those who have
done evil will rise to be condemned.

2. 1 Corinthians 3:11-15 (Choose a verse that captures
the sense of the whole passage).

11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the
one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12
If any man builds on this foundation using gold,
silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13
his work will be shown for what it is, because the
Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed
with fire, and the fire will test the quality of
each man’s work. 14 If what he has built survives,
he will receive his reward. 15 If it is burned up,
he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but
only as one escaping through the flames.

3. 2 Corinthians 5:10

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of
Christ, that each one may receive what is
due him for the things done while in the body,
whether good or bad.

4. Revelation 20:11-15 (Choose a verse that captures the
sense of the whole passage for you)

11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was
seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his
presence, and there was no place for them. 12 And I
saw the dead, great and small, standing
before the throne, and books were opened. Another
book was opened, which is the book of
life. The dead were judged according to what they
had done as recorded in the books. 13 The
sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and
Hades gave up the dead that were in them,
and each person was judged according to what he had
done. 14 Then death and Hades were
thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is
the second death. 15 If anyone’s name was not
found written in the book of life, he was thrown
into the lake of fire.

E. The Eternal State

1. Revelation 21:3-4

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,
"Now the dwelling of God is with men, and
he will live with them. They will be his people, and
God himself will be with them and be their
God. 4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes.
There will be no more death or mourning or
crying or pain, for the old order of things has
passed away."

X. The Gospel (Summary Verse: 1 Corinthians 15:3-4)

A. All Men Are Sinners

1. Isaiah 53:6

We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has
turned to his own way; and the LORD
has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

2. Romans 3:23

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of
God.

B. Death and Judgment Is The Penalty For Sin

1. Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God
is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

2. Hebrews 9:27

Just as man is destined to die once, and after that
to face judgment.

C. Christ Died To Pay The Penalty For Sin

1. Romans 5:8

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this:
While we were still sinners, Christ died for
us.

2. 1 Peter 3:18

For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous
for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He
was put to death in the body but made alive by the
Spirit.

D. Good Works Will Not Save (If you have followed the course
above you probably already know these
verses)

1. Ephesians 2:8-9

8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through
faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the
gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can
boast.

2. Titus 3:5

He saved us, not because of righteous things we had
done, but because of his mercy. He
saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal
by the Holy Spirit

E. People Must Believe In Him For Salvation

1. John 3:18

Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but
whoever does not believe stands condemned
already because he has not believed in the name of
God’s one and only Son.

2. John 5:24

I tell you truth, whoever hears is my word and
believes me has eternal life and will not be
condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.

F. Assurance of Salvation

1. Romans 8:16

The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we
are God’s children.

2. 1 John 5:11-13

11 And this is the testimony: God has given us
eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He who
has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son
of God does not have life. 13 I write these
things to you who believe in the name of the Son of
God so that you may know that you have
eternal life.

Subject: Encouraging Teenagers to Memorize?
From: "Anne S"

Hello all,
Been enjoying reading the
discussions, ideas and encouragements
on this list about memorization.

I'm looking for some ideas and
encouragement for teenagers.
I teach the high school Sunday School
class at my church...relatively new to
this position, started in March.
They are good kids, small class, 6 or 7,
depending who's in town and we've
been working through a youth study
on Romans with great discussions.

But I've fallen flat trying to encourage
them to memorize the key verses from
the various sections of Romans. I printed
out cards for them; I tried sharing how
memorization has made a difference for
me; and we have, I think, a good connection,
overall. But they just didn't do it.

Hmm....leadership gap here maybe.
Need better motivators?

Any ideas?

Anne

Thanks for including me in your Bible Memorization group.

My name is Robert Goar, and I am a chapel volunteer at the
Idaho State Veteran's Home, Boise, Idaho. I believe that
by memorizing Scripture, I'll be a more successful tool
for our Lord Jesus. I minister to the veterans every Monday.
Every other Monday I show a religious video to the
folks at the Home, and then every other Sunday I help get
the residents to the 2:45 p.m. chapel service.

How often do you contact members? How many are there in the
group? Where across the United States do they live?

I hope this information about me is helpful. I'll look
forward to hearing from you. Is there a charge for what you do?

Sincerely,

Subject: Passage group proposals
From: "Peter Reynolds"

Hi all!

A few days ago I asked whether anyone would like to memorise passages with
me, and several responded. But their requirements were all slightly
different, so I am putting the following proposals to the list as a whole.

That we have four groups to memorise passages from each of Psalms,
prophets,
gospels, and epistles. Each group would aim to memorise about five verses
a
fortnight. So if you were faster than that you could join all four and
learn ten verses a week!

I propose the following passages
Group A: Psalm 72
Group B: Isaiah 40
Group C: John 14
Group D: Romans 8

Groups A and C would start on 1 August and have new verses on 15 August,
Groups B and D on 8 August, their next passage 22 August and so on. If
no-one objects I will announce the verses to be memorised on the Friday or
Saturday before, trying to split the chapters into logical sections of 4 to
6 verses at a time.

I also suggest that we should encourage discussion/shared meditation of the
passages we are memorising. Messages relating to any group's passage,
should have at the start of the subject line the group name, e.g. a
message
relating to Isaiah 40 should be headed
Group B: ..............

This will enable those not participating to ignore irrelevant messages.
There will be no specific group membership, anyone can participate by just
learning the verses, but obviously it will be great if folk make themselves
known to each other and report progress.

I hope this will prove successful and fruitful. Any practical
modifications, please suggest early this coming week so we can get up and
running at start of August God willing.

Hi Peter:

I believe that for us to develop consistency in memorizing Scripture we
need
to be held accountable. On this list I am interested in participating if
there are a few others willing to focus on key verses or sections of
Scripture and we would set specific timelines to complete our commitments.
At present I am working through the verses in the Navigators 2:7 material
for Courses 5 and 6 but I have also been working on Colossians 1. Further,
I read through Proverbs on a regular basis as well as Psalms and I have
started writing selected verses from those books and started to work on
these as well.

Let me know what you are interested in and maybe work could work something
out.

Welcome Scott!

I too am working on the Sermon on the Mount - it is a fascinating piece
of Scripture to memorize. I encourage other members of the list to pray
about memorizing Matt.5-7 as it is very rewarding . I would be
interested in comparing notes with you on our efforts. God Bless!

Rick Powell

P.S. to Dan Myer ,
The Advanced Scripture memory program looks great (it would take a
person quite a while to work through this)! I will be taking a closer
look at it as I am able.

Thanks!

From: "David McKay"

Hi Anne
You may find that in the future, when they really want to get to know God
and His Word, that they remember your encouragement. Most Christians I know
are not really interested in this level of commitment.

I think it would help if you got some support from your minister and other
congregational members. In our church, I think people think it is too
difficult, and that it may turn people off if we ask them to memorise.

Being a youth pastor was where Memlok Bible Memory System was born in my
life.
I worked with ONLY the leaders. It was a requirement (along with written
devotions which we talked about each week). They eventually led the group
from 60 to about 300 in a year by recruiting kids to a wed eve study they
each led.

Have you considered using the word pic idea i use? Whittier Christian High
School
did it with about 600 kids for 5 years here in CA. It has the 3 key
ingredients (RAD) review (only 5 min/day 5 days a week), accountability,
and desire (they LIKE the verse they select each week).

Hope this helps!

As you'll no doubt have seen, due to the good response, I've now put
forward
proposals for groups. So far we have requests for the Sermon on the Mount
to be added, but I'm not sure exactly how I'm going to add this. Maybe
have
a group C1 and C2 running in parallel.

Hi all!

A few days ago I asked whether anyone would like to memorise passages with
me, and several responded. But their requirements were all slightly
different, so I am putting the following proposals to the list as a whole.

That we have four groups to memorise passages from each of Psalms,
prophets,
gospels, and epistles. Each group would aim to memorise about five verses
a
fortnight. So if you were faster than that you could join all four and
learn ten verses a week!

I propose the following passages
Group A: Psalm 72
Group B: Isaiah 40
Group C: John 14
Group D: Romans 8

OK, by popular demand, we shall have the Sermon on the Mount too, starting

I am not sure how to reach all those in the group who want
to memorize Scripture. But I'll start by telling you who I am.
My name is Robert Goar, and I live in Boise, Idaho. This
coming October I'll be 70. My wife and I have two married
daughters, and five grandchildren. I am retired from the Air
Force, and also Boise's only daily newspaper. For three
years I have been a chapel volunteer at the Idaho State Veteran's
Home. I have many interests. The latest: I'm a volunteer neighborhood
watch person, and I do my patrolling one night a week -- on my mountain
bike. This involves two hours. When winter gets here I'll increase my
patrol duties to two nights a week. That is when I again start attending
Bible Study Fellowship. We meet one night a week - from 6:50 until
9:00 p.m. Since I am in the area I patrol on Friday, I'll just do some
patroling then. We are nothing more than the eyes and ears for the
Boise Police Department. They can't be everywhere, so our group do
what they can to help control crime.

But this is enough about me. I believe I'd like to be in Group C. I use
John
14 a lot at the Veteran's Home. So many there are so close to eternity,
that passages from the Book of John seem appropriate.

Please let me hear from those of you who are in Group C. And also let
me know how the Holy Spirit is changing your lives.

Until later . . .

Subject: RE: Encouraging Teenagers to Memorize?
From: Melissa Bull

Anne,

Have you tried memorizing it during class time?

If not, you could take five minutes each Sunday, or every other Sunday, and
devote it to study of the memorization scripture. It would be a verse (I'm
assuming) that you've already talked about, so you could give it to them
and
give them time to study it quietly. Then repeat it back and forth to each
other, talk about the meaning to give their minds a short break, then
repeat
it again. Then at the end of class time, review it once more. I read
something when I was learning a language that said that the best memory
technique is to hear something and repeat it, to hear it 5 seconds later
and
repeat it, to be prompted for it one minute later, and again several
minutes
later. Then at the beginning of the next class you could review it.

Being teenagers, another method to try is to let them set it to a rhythm
and
then rap it (using snaps and hand claps too). Putting scriptures to rhythm
makes them easier to remember and embeds them deeper into memory. This
method works better with longer sections, but I think they would find it
really fun and would get excited about it. They would probably hate the
idea at first (I'm not so far from teenage years so I remember these things
:>) but would probably get used to it quickly and look forward to it. They
could then use hand motions, etc to help them remember. The more senses
used, the better they'll remember.

A possible incentive could be recognition in the church - in our youth
group, we had a Bible Quiz team, and in order to get a certificate, a
person
had to memorize an entire book of the bible, and quote each chapter with
four or less mistakes to the youth leader, and one chapter to the church
congregation during one of the smaller services. If you gave the group as
a
whole the opportunity to demonstrate what they've learned, they might be
more eager to learn. If you went with the rapping idea, they might be
excited to "perform" for the congregation. Or you could always use some
sort of thing like an ice cream excursion when they all finish memorizing a
set of scriptures.

I don't know if these are things you've tried or would be interested, but
maybe they've sparked other ideas in your mind. you know your youth and
what might work with them. May God give you wisdom! Don't give up though .
. . I wish I would have had more of an opportunity to memorize scripture in
my youth group. I tried a little to do it myself, but had no motivation or
support, since I wasn't in Bible Quiz. It's important for them to do it
together to learn the value, so that when they get to college they'll do it
for themselves.

Hi all...

I think that you are right...that we need to help encourage each other
in our memorization and with that includes holding each other accountable.

I'm envolved as a coach in "Bible Quizzing". It's a great way to get
kids to memorize scripture because they compete on it at local and national
events. As a coach I'm also able to teach them how to work as a team, and
how to win and lose with the correct attitute. (if any of you may be

The reason I brought that us is that my goal is to memorize this coming
years material with the kids I'm coaching. (I actually started before they
are). They (we) will be learning Galatians, Ephesians, Philipians,
Colossians, and Philemon. I'm currently through Galatians 4.

I think someone mentioned working on Colossians, but it will be a little
bit before I get there.

Another thought I would like to through out to the group for ideas about
holding each other accountable. I've been thinking of creating a web site
where people could tell what they are working on and others can maybe find
people to memorize passages/chapters/books, together.

Let me know if you have any thoughts on this.

~~~
Hi everyone,
This is the first time that I have responded to the group.  I just wanted
to
say that the above sentence really caught my attention as the Lord has also
been speaking to me on love, and about pursuing love.  I have also been
asking Him to show me how to do that.  I have been studying and studying
the
Word lately so that I can have its wealth in my head and heart, but the
Lord
brought me to this passage:
1 Corinthians 13:1-3, "If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but
have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.  If I have
the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if
I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
If
I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but
have not love, I gain nothing."
and then,
1 Corinthians 14:1, "Follow the way of love...."
I can have all the Word memorized and tucked away in my head and heart
along
with its understanding, but if I have not love, it is all nothing and
worthless.  Oh ladies and gentlemen, this spoke volumns to me.  It was
almost overwhelming--actually, it is.  How am I to follow the way of love?
I struggle daily with it as I tend to be very impatient, and unkind at
times.  Having alot of knowledge of the Word can make a person feel "proud"
too (look at me, I know so much!!!) so that is not good either.  Can we all
join together daily and pray for one another that ALONG WITH memorizing the
Word together, that we may excell in pursuing the way of love, and then the
Word we have in our heads and hearts will bring more fruit.
God bless you all and MARANATHA!!!
From:
Tom, we'll proceed with Scripture memorization. And we'll look
forward to hearing what you have in mind for all of us.
Where in Africa are you? Our neighbor's father was a medical
missionary there -- but that was ages ago. And our neighbor's
wife was also a teacher there. I'll have to ask her where she
taught. She is originally from England. It sounds as if you
have an exciting life. Serving Him is always interesting, and
worthwhile.
Its now 9:15 p.m. in Boise, and I had better "secure" for the
night. I'll look forward to your next e-mail. God bless, and take
care of yourself, and your family. Please tell me more about
what you are doing. That is exciting.
From: "Peter Reynolds"
Hi!
Further to my initial proposals, we have had considerable interest in
running another group on the Sermon on the Mount.  This will now run as an
alternative to Group C, will be called Group S, and will also start next
weekend, God willing.  Look out for the announcement on Friday or Saturday
of the relevant verses to be memorised during the following fortnight by
Groups A and C / S !  Groups B and D will start one week later.
Thanks to all who have responded.  Please will any to whom I have not
replied please forgive me!
I am a Teen Bible Quizzing coach also. Our season and meetings don't really
start until fall, but I'll be teaching the Galatians, Ephesians,
Philipians,
Colossians, Philemon series. Maybe those of us involved in quizzing could
form an accountability group for working on memorizing passages or books,
as
well as share teaching/coaching tips. I'd be interested.
Hi!
I am pleased to announce that the verses to be memorised by group A in the
fortnight starting on Sunday 1 August are Psalm 72: 1-5.
For further info see the passage groups explanation page at:
http://website.lineone.net/~reynoldsp/memgroups.htm
Best wishes for every success in memorising, and I hope that we will
receive
blessing from this, rather than getting big-headed!  I find it difficult to
concentrate on Bible-reading, but find that when I memorise the words I
actually meditate on them and get benefit.
Kind regards
Subject: organizing the memorization groups
From: "Anne S"
Would it be useful to have a web page
listing the groups who are memorizing
various passages of scriptures for reference
for those visiting this list?
And even, if desired, it could
tracking progress of group members.
Could even have a fill in the blank form
to add your name to any of the groups
or to update your memorization progress.
If someone sends me the various groups
to start, I can create such a site.
