Subject: How do you start "stringing verses together"?
From: Brian Janko

You have said in the past that, after you have all the verses in a chapter down,
then you start to string them together.

What is the best "way" to "string them together"? Do you have a method for
doing that? I know we should avoid constantly starting at the beginning,
otherwise we learn the first verses better than the later verses.

But how do you "string them together"? Do you learn v. 1 and v. 2 together,
then learn v. 2 and v. 3 together, then v. 3 and v.4, etc??? Or what?

Thanks

You're not alone with the battle of trying to memorise scripture, i too find it
difficult, so keep trying i've no advice to offer you, just my blessings i send

it go into your memory more, not tried it yet, so can't say if it has helped or
not, but i am going to give it a try.

Hi All!!
It is such a blessing to be able to join a bible memorization group. I have
battled with trying to memorize scripture and I have finally decided that Satan
was not going to win. I have been told by friends in bible study that when one
tries to memorize the Word, one can come up against obstacles because it is
God's Word. I do believe that, but I have now chosen to not let Satan win!!

Thanks and God Bless!!

Subject: Brian Janko's question on stringing
From: James Kephart

Dear Brian,

You can do one with two and three with four etc. if you like. I have another
little deal I do sometimes. I will take a little 3x5 card and write the first 2
or 3 words of each verse. Then I will carry that card around and say them and
if I have to look at the 1st words I can. The main thing is to know the
individual verses very, very good before you start stringing. I am so happy you
are doing this. It will get easier with each selection you do. I have been
coaching people for 26 years and they are so happy once they see they can do it.
God will use these words you memorize. He always does. He will use them to
bless someone and you too. If you have a friend to coach you about 15 min a
week, it helps. Also, once you get the verses down, be sure to perform by doing
your verse someplace. Our church gives the memorizers a chance to say it in one
of the services. They bring their relatives and friends and they all sign a
certificate. You can see what a certificate looks like if you go to
http://www.threethirtyclub.com and print one of the meditations. Let me know
what passage you are memorizing. We might have a meditation on that subject.

Blessings!

{It is not the burdens of life that weigh us down, it is how we handle them.}

Hi, & welcome

Personally I have a couple of methods... Begin with a few scriptures on the
"mind" such as 1 Corinthians 2:16 ..." But we have the mind of Christ. Proverbs
10:7 - The memory of the righteous is a blessing, but the name of the wicked
will rot. (My memory is blessed).

2Cor.10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every
high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing
into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; Etc.

Then a few on who you are in "Him" in "whom"& what you have in "Him" such as
Psalms 18:2 - The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my
rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my
stronghold.

Psalms 43:2 - For thou art the God in whom I take refuge; Ephesians 3:12 - in
whom we have boldness and confidence of access through our faith in him.

Colossians 1:14 - in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Etc.

I read my scriptures slowly on tape many times &
leave my tape in the car tape player. If you read it, write it, say,& see it
you're getting it 4 times at once.

I write & rewrite them. I have a partner in the church we encourage & help

each other, we call ourselves "God's L.A.M.B.S."-Learning And Memorizing
Biblical Scriptures.

God will bless your efforts.

My personal prayer is that God would teach me to be a hand extended, to love
even the unlovely,to forgive those who despitefully use me, & be a testimony to
those who need to know Jesus, and know God as a loving Father

Soft music doesn't help me, but what does help is reading the verse aloud about
5 times before I try to say it for the 1st time. Then is subsequent times I
generally don't have to read it 5 times, maybe only once, but aloud is very
important to me.

From: Jeremy Kirk

I think I'm going to write something. Since I only seem to read the messages.

I've been creative in the different way's I've tried to memorize the Holy Bible.
Order of verse, grouping together, etc. Some work better than others, but I've
reallized that nothing works better than just dilligently studying, and
repeating verses through the day. It's like excercising. You sometimes don't
realize you're gaining muscle or losing weight until someone compliments you.
Compliment yourself on your gradual learning. Sounds weird, but It helps for me!

I imagine ya'll know that. I'm just putting it up for the heck of it, ya know?
Someone might benefit :o)

Sparking motivation. Jesus! Jesus! Jesus!

From:

Once you have learned the verses really well, the stringing won't be hard. A
good way to do it is write the first 3 or 4 of the first words to each verse
down in the order of the verses. As you visualize the order, and can go thru
the whole section with the help of the first few words, you will soon find you
can throw the list away. Also, you can soon visualize the verse and where it is
from the page you are memorizing. The meditations at the
http://www.threethirtyclub.com are laid out so that visualization is easy, but
it isn't that hard doing chapters either because you visualize where the verse
in on the page. Do as much of your memory work aloud as you can, that helps
too. To give you confidence in memorizing and stringing, why don't you try
about a 10 to 12 verse section at first. Once you do a shortie you will have
more confidence for longer sections. Once you do it you will be so proud and
confident and happy that you will feel like you can memorize anything scripture
wise.

Subject: Brian Janko asks about long verses
From: James Kephart

Brian Janko asks:

How common is it to find long VERSES -- (not sections, but just one
verse) -- verses which are so long that they must be broken down into small
pieces? Does anyone run into that? Is it just a matter of "breaking down" the
long verse and working on it "as though" it were one, two, or three shorter
verses? How do others in the group handle that?

Dear Brian,

I am no expert on the subject of long verses, but
I can tell you how I do it. Maybe someone else
can chime in if they have a good method. What I
do is break the verse up in little pieces. This
is what we have to do with children on even short
verses. I break it into little pieces, say three,
learn each on separately, then after I know the parts
very well, I try to put them together. It is almost
the same as stringing 2 or 3 verses together. Adults,
when the get used to memorizing can do better and
better on the long verses. But I don't consider
the time spent as a bad thing. God promises the
blessings for meditating on His word, so the person
who takes longer may actually get more of the blessing
since he meditated longer. I just had a struggle with
Mark 21 to 23 NIV. Though it is 3 verses, it is
better said as one, but it was a mouthful.

It reads "For out of the heart of man, come evil
thoughts, fornication, theft, murder, adultery,
coveting, wickedness, deceipt, licentiousness,
envy, slander, pride, foolishness, all these things
defile a man."

This is found in our 17th Meditation at http://www.threethirtyclub.com

I broke the verses into two parts and kept working
until I had each of the two parts done, then I strung
them together. It just took a lot of repeating and
trying, but I really feel good to be able to do it
all at once now.

I hope this helps a little. Bless you for your love
of God's word!

Jim Kephart

From: James Kephart

Brian,
Some people insist that you quote chapters and verses or "references", but I do
not. That is not to say I don't know where to find the verses, because I do,
but I don't require myself or any students to worry about it. There are enough
reasons for people to think they hate scripture memorization without making them
do references. But there are other reasons that I don't ask for references.
Jesus quoted the O.T. often, but the version he had access to, had no
references, in fact no punctuation. Then too, I believe that the scripture is
in-spirited (inspired) but I don't think the reference is inspired. The Bible
says we will prosper if we meditate on his word, but I don't think that reward
extends to meditation on the location of the verse. We can enjoy a pretty church
on Elm St. without me telling you it is 3201 Elm St. And with all the modern
concordances and computors, we can find the locations of any verse if we know a
couple of words in it. There may be others that have some good reasons for
quoting the references along with the scripture. I know it is still insisted on
by some. Thirty years ago, when I did all the Navigator verses it was proper to
quote the references, but even then I did not do it.

Blessings!
