Hello,

My name is Bill Burk and I am a gospel preacher living in the Dallas/ Fort
Worth, Tx. area. I have been interested in memorizing God's word for a number of
years. I have been blessed to do a great deal of memory work while preparing for
sermons and classes. Sadly however, I have always been poor at reviewing what I
learn. So, when the opportunity arises to use the same passages again often
times I have to go back and rememorize them. However, I must admit that its
always easier the second time. Recently I have been working on the one chapter
books of the New Testament. I have finished 3rd John and am presently working on
Jude. I joined the group because anytime I read or hear about others progress in
memorization my own motivation level becomes higher. I also, when I can find
them, like to read books concerning Bible memorization. I recently read "His
Word in My Heart" by Janet Pope. Although the book seems to have been written
with women in mind, I enjoyed reading about Janet's memoration techniques and
story. Here's to memorizing and most importantly applying God's word...

God bless,

Bill

I'm sorry I really haven't spent the time to find out how to use this

probably won't do much until returning home to Alaska.

As I probably have indicated I have memorized Scripture by the "book" in
the last two years. This past Sunday I quoted the book of James to a
Sunday School class and two weeks earlier the book of Galatians (quite a
contrast).
This morning I walked around a little lake here in Alaska 3 times and quoted the
following 7 books (Phil, Gal, Eph, James, I John, I Peter, and Col) I think I
will stop memorizing for a while and just
consolidate. Have a good summer. Sam

Hi, Stephen,
Thanks for taking the time to revive the Biblememory discussion list.
Though I'm not a professional evangelist, I've loved memorizing Scripture for
quite some time.
I've been prompted to roll up my sleeves and do more memorizing as a result of
my fianci and I having taken our 3rd reading of Rick Warren's The Purpose Driven
Life. (By 3rd reading I mean that we first agreed to read it together beginning
on Thanksgiving Day of last year and because it was becoming such a meaningful
part of our lives we decided to read it the second time to help us start a
tradition between the two of us of reading the 40 chapters over
the first 40 days of each new year. The second time was so fruitful that
we naturally wanted to read it again after she recovered from a brief, but
intense illness.) Of course, reading The Purpose Driven Life so many times in
close proximity naturally made me want to drill down on other Christians texts
under the
philosophy of reading primarily DEEPLY rather than broadly. (I came to
this philosophy after reading hundreds upon hundreds of books but never quite
feeling the satisfaction that I was looking for. Reading DEEPLY, REPEATEDLY
seems to have solved that issue for me.) So, now because it just so happened
that we finished The Purpose Driven Life approximately 40 days prior to the 10th
anniversary of my mother's death, I wanted to spend those 40 days doing
something spiritual.
My fianci agreed to let me read Norman Vincent Peale's little book, "Thought
Conditioners" to her for 40 days CONSECUTIVELY!! So, that's 40 scriptures per
day for 40 days.
I can't quite explain to you what a rich experience it is to do these things
with her!!
But all of this is said because it now occurs to me that rather than memorizing
a broad array of scriptures, I want to imbibe a small number of scriptures
thoroughly - i.e., setting NO LIMIT on the number of times I will repeat the
scripture.
I created an acronym for this purpose. It's called CRUISE! And it stands
for Continuing Repeating Until It Seems Easy!
I must admit that using this concept on one scripture helps to increase my
passion for all Bible scriptures.

Thank you for welcoming me to your group. I have only been involved in
memorization since April. Up to this point I have memorized the "Roman'S Road"
verses, some verses on preaching from I and II Corinthians, the "I am"s of John
and Exodus 20:1-17. I feel called to memorize long portions and books. I am
about to start memorizing the book of Jonah, with long term goals of Revelation
and the Gospel of Luke. I memorize in KJV, which is my version of choice, but I
am not a "KJV onlyist".
I hope I can contribute to the group.

I agree with everyone that memorizing Scripture is a great blessing. For me, my
desire far exceeds my activity, and I am very sorry for that.

If anyone knows of a topic based (or arranged) memorization plan, I would like
to use it. I have heard that the Navigators have such a system, but I would
like to simply download it rather than buy a book. Anyone know of such a
resource?

May God bless each of you in your efforts and may your example light a fire in
the heart of many others to do the same ... and concomitantly to apply what is
learned.

Hello All,

I have a question for Sam, who I see is also an Alaskan. To maintain that many
books, how often do you review each? I have memorized James and am currently
working on Colossians, but find I'm "losing" James in my efforts to memorize
Colossians.

For others who are memorizing individual scriptures, how often do you review
them to retain them? It's odd, but I think I do better retaining an entire book
than individual scriptures. I'm sure it must have something to do with how
often I review them. Is there a rule of thumb that seems to work for anyone?

Thanks for your reply.

Hi everyone,

I'm Deborah and I live in Australia. I am a stay at home mum and homeschool my
3 youngest children - 10, 8 and 6 year olds. I also have a daughter ( left home
) and have lost 2 babies but am hoping to add more children to our
family. Just keep praying and being in the right place at the right time
and hope that God blesses us.

I joined the group a while back but due to the lack of dialogue on the list I
have been super quiet myself. I came across it while surfing webpages.
Must of been surfing about memory verses or something that day - can't remember.

I haven't memorised any books yet but it sounds like a great idea. Also a lot
of time and work too.

I have memorised odd verses though.

We've read the bible through. Am raising the children on Old King James.
We read 1 John today ( whole book ) and at the end I suggested to the children
that we memorise that book. I got a good response so we may give it a go. It's
only 5 chapters.

Have made a few memory verse worksheets for the children to help them memorise.
( I often do worksheets/workbooks due to the homeschooling thing )

My 6 year old is sitting here on my lap reading this as I write. LOL.

He would like to say:

LoL

Ok - he's happy again now that I let him type something in. :)

Dear Sam,

You are doing a lot better than I am. I am still trying to undo all the
Catholic syncretic heresies by reading the Bible from the beginning. Then I
will add the bones by learning the main and essential doctrines and memorizing
those verses. After that I will learn about apologetics as the Christian
Scientists, Jehovah Witnesses and Mormons are all over the place in Ukriane and
Russia busy witnessing. Where are my Christian brothers and sisters in the
Lord? What are they doing and thinking about world evangelism?

All along I will be marking my Bible for verses to memorize as I read. I have
downloaded several free programs to help me memorize the verses and later the
books of the Bible in toto, but just the New Testament. It is an ambitious
program, but I have to start from the bottom up. I live in Odessa, Ukraine and
the weather is just like my home in Columbus, Ohio.

If I could just get an e-Sword program to read the Bible to me, that would help.
You can find that program at www.e-Sword.net. Another good one to read is The
Sword Project from www.crosswire.org. I will be studying the doctrines from
www.carm.org or the Christian Apologetic Research Ministry.
It is full of verses to memorize on any problem or subject and it makes it all
make sense in context.

Have a good time in your home of Alaska, it is one of the few states this Army
brat has not been to.

Sincerely,
Dave

Hi Everyone:

On the subject of reviewing, daily review (in the morning) seems to work best
for me. Over the last couple of years, I've been able to learn the Sermon on
the Mount (Matt 5-7), James, Psalms 1-7, 23, and 100, and I Corinthians 13. I
am presently working on I John which, for some reason, is the most difficult
book I've tried to learn.

I usually begin reviewing right after I wake up, and continue on through my
shower time, until I'm dressed and ready for the day. I go through most of the
Psalms daily, and also review the book I'm currently in (i. e., I John) daily.
The sections I've known for a while (Sermon on the Mount and James) I review on
alternate days.

Based on my experience, daily review has become a habit, and I don't know that I
could retain what I've learned without it!
I find times now and then to meditate on smaller portions during the day, but
for me nothing can replace that larger block of time first thing in the morning.
Best of luck to everyone as you memorize. It has been one of the greatest
blessing of my life as a believer.

EZRA Anyone?

Hi. My name is Phil Walker and I am a part of HAKOTS, which is a small group of
Bible enthusiasts who are memorizing 1 key verse from every chapter of the Old
Testament. We are just about to start EZRA so I thought I would send an email
out to the discussion group to see if there were any joiners out there.

Most of us use NIV. However, ee currently send out the verses in KJ, NKJ and
ESV and would be glad to send you the verses in any translation you prefer.

Accountability is flexable. Some just receive the key verses and learn them at
their own pace with no accountability. Others email the verses from memory into
me every five days and I correct them and send them back.

Our summer schedule is EZRA = June 11th-20th; NEHEMIAH = July 1-13; ESTHER =
July 16-25; JOB = August 1 - Sept 12.

We encourage HAKOTS joiners to also read the chapter they are memorizing a key
verse from.

Below are the verses for EZRA in the NIV. Please simply email me if you would
like them in another translation.

May God bless you as you learn His Word and get to know Him better,

NUMBERS 10:32 If you come with us, we will share with you whatever good things
the LORD gives us.

In Christ, Phil Walker

EZRA 1:3 Anyone of His people among you- may his God be with him, and let him go
up to Jerusalem in Judah and build the temple of the LORD, the God of Israel,
the God Who is in Jerusalem.

EZRA 2:68 When they arrived at the house of the LORD in Jerusalem, some of the
heads of the families gave freewill offerings toward the rebuilding of the House
of God on its site.

EZRA 3:6On the first day of the seventh month they began to offer burnt offering
to the LORD, though the foundation of the LORD's temple had not yet been laid.

EZRA 4:4 Then the peoples around them set out to discourage the people of Judah
and make them afraid to go on building.

EZRA 5:11 This is the answer theygave us: "We are the servants of the God of
heaven and earth, and we are rebuilding the temple that was built many years
ago,on that a great king of Israel built and finished."

EZRA 6:22 For seven days they celebrated with joy the Feast of Unleavened Bread,
because the LORD had filled them with joy by changing the attitude of the king
of Assyria, so that he assisted them in the work on the House of God, the God of
Israel.

EZRA 7:23 Whatever the God of heaven has prescribed, let it be done with
diligence for the temple of the God of heaven. Why should there be wrath against
the realm of the king and of his sons?

EZRA 8:22 I was ashamed to ask the kingfor soldiers and horsemen to protect us
from enemies on the road, because we had told the king, "The gracious Hand of
our God is on everyone who looks to Him, but His grat anger is against all who
forsake Him."

EZRA 9:13 What has happened to us is a result of our evil deeds and our great
guilt, and yet, our God, You have punished us less than our sins have deserved
and have given us a remnant like this.

EZRA 10:4 Rise up; this matter is in your hands. We will support you; so take
courage and do it

Stephen

Thanks for the continued efforts to help other memorize God's Word. My name is
Dennis Thompson and I was the one who some time ago asked for your insights
regarding my Romans 12 project.
I am still working on the project to have 1 million men recite from memory
Romans 12 in their local church on Father's Day. I appreciated your insights
into my Power Point presentation. At one point I was going to have a friend
develop a web sight for me. I was going to display the Power Point on the web
sight for others to see, but it fell through. I am going to make some contacts
to still develop the web sight, but my first step is to find a group of people
who will pray with me as I move forward with the ROM12 project.

My next step is to present to my church the challenge for just 50 men to spend
the year memorizing Romans 12 to say in church on Father's Day 2005. I am also
working on a simple 30 day devotional guide which breaks the chapter into 30
segments.
So I do covet your prayers and any insights others might have.
At this point my lauch date would be Father's Day 2005, with the million men
push being for Father's Day 2008. This would also coordinate with the
presidential election. I think it would be so neat to have a million men
calling on God to renew the minds of men across this country and even into the
leadership of our government.

This may seem a ways out, but time moves so fast and 2008 will be here before we
know it.

I am going with a group of boys on a wilderness adventure backpack for 10 days.
I am the spiritual coordinator and of course, the boys will be memorizing Romans
12 as the basis for my devotional guide.
Pray for this time with the boys that God's Word will have a profound impact on
their lives.

Thanks Group, good talking with you.

From: Garrett Pendergraft

I too, have allowed myself the lofty ambition of memorizing the entire Bible.
Even though I'm (only?) 25 years old, I realize that this goal might not be
achievable in my lifetime -- but I think I've come up with a way to do it that
will prevent (or at least mitigate) frustrations such as I've experienced in the
past (deciding where to start, figuring out what to do with genealogies, etc.).
Basically, here's the plan (feel free to comment on this, if you think I'm on to
something, missing something, or whatever):

STEP 1. Memorize the books of the Bible, in order (I'm sad to say that I had to
spend a couple of days on this).

STEP 2. For each book, create what one of my seminary profs calls a "big idea"
sentence: a one-subject, one-predicate sentence (which can get rather
complicated) that captures as much of the content of the book as possible.
Basically, you come up with a big idea sentence for each paragraph in the text,
and then for larger sections, and then for each major section, working your way
up until you.ve got a sentence for the whole book. For example, this is what I
came up with for John 3:

C. [3:1-36] God's purpose for sending his Son into the world as a light is to
provide salvation and eternal life for those who believe and are as a result
born again from above.

1. [3:1-15] Jesus' teaching regarding being born again (of the
Spirit) from above and its relation to Jesus' death doesn't quite get through
to Nicodemus despite -- perhaps in some part because of -- his status as
Pharisee and teacher of Israel.

2. [3:16-21] God's dispatch of Christ into the world as a light provides
salvation and eternal life for those who come to the light because of their
belief in God's only Son.

3. [3:22-36] John the Baptist's description of himself as merely the friend of
the bridegroom Christ, the superior One sent from above to speak the words of
God, as a response to a dispute involving his disciples, explains and reinforces
the fact that God's purpose for sending his Son was to provide eternal life for
those who believe.

Doing this for the whole book led to the following:

"Jesus Christ, the life-giving and eternal Word of God, sent from above with the
authority of the Father as a Light to the world, glorified the Father through
his miracles and his teachings -- which led to his willing death and victorious
resurrection -- so that those entrusted to and believing in him would have
eternal life and access to God through the Holy Spirit."

Of course, others might disagree with some of the emphases, inclusions, or
exclusions in my big idea sentence, and will inevitably come up with their own
-- but that's a good thing.
I think the process of coming up with a big idea sentence can be quite edifying,
and as long as we're faithful to the text, we're free to come up with something
that fits best with the way we think. Granted, it is a lot of work, and quite a
daunting task (especially for a book of any length); but it is a rewarding
process in and of itself, and I think a great way to tie up all that hard work
is to memorize the sentence you've come up with.

STEP 3. Memorize the "big idea" sentence that you've come up with for each book
of the Bible. At this point, you will have "memorized"
the entire Bible! At the very least, you will have a basic idea of what's going
on in each book of the Bible (even the minor prophets!) which, unfortunately, is
quite rare in the church today. How many laypeople do you know who can give you
a brief overview of Hosea, for example?

STEP 4. From here, you have two options: 1) start memorizing your intermediate
"big idea" sentences (for longer books, you'll usually end up with anywhere from
two to five major sections); or 2) start memorizing individual verses of your
choice. This step, of course, is a lifelong project. But as you memorize
individual verses, and intermediate big idea sentences, you can be adjusting and
tweaking your sentences for the entire books, coming up with better and better
ways to capture the content in the same number of (or fewer,
even) words.

Steps three and four are somewhat interchangeable, in that you can start
memorizing individual verses, or dig deeper into a particular book, before you
have a command of all the books. But for people like myself, who want to
memorize the whole Bible but realize that it will take the better part (if not
all) of the rest of my life, completing step three will allow some sense of
(relatively) short-term accomplishment.

This plan, of course, should accompany a regular (yearly?) reading of the Bible,
and as you do your daily reading you can be making notes of which individual
verses you'd like to memorize (as Dave mentioned). So in a sense, it's just a
beefed-up reading plan, in which you take notes (i.e., make big idea sentences)
as you read and then synthesize and memorize when you're done.

I welcome comments, questions, and suggestions! This is a fairly new idea that
I'm still sort of working on.

Hi you all.....i sent an email to the group sometime back i think.....i began
memorizing scripture the last week of November ....i am a walker/jogger and
spend an hour each day, 6 days a week, exercising....i have found it a great
place to do my memory work....i take a little bible with me and mark each verse
i memorize in yellow....i started with some Psalms--121; 103:1-14; 23; 73:23-28;
138:7-8; 143:6-10; 46:1-7 and then i memorized the prayers in Philippians,
Ephesians, Colossians as well as most of chapter 1 and 3 of Colossians and all
of Matt.5 and 6....plan on doing chp.7 later but have just now completed Rev.4
and starting on 5...i have never done anything that has impacted my life like
this....don't know if any of the rest of you exercise much but is a great time
to do the memory work as there are no interruptions and you are killing two
birds with one stone--physical and mental exercise! ....as far as review....i
try to go through all of it once a week after i have done it over and over for
about 3 months...it does become a problem though the more you memorize to keep
it all going .....
that to me is a bigger challenge than memorizing it to begin with....i feel in
my spirit that there is coming a day not too far off that we are going to be so
glad that we have His Word down in our hearts for many reasons but the main one
is because we may have our bibles taken from us....i have kind of become a pig
trying to get as much of His word down in me as i can...the more i have the more
i want!!!!!.....am so interested in hearing each one of you tell how you go
about this wonderful habit....will leave you with this..."Now to Him who is able
to keep you from stumbling and to present you faultless before the presence of
His glory with exceeding joy, To God our Savior who alone is wise be glory and
majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever. Amen." Jude 24-25

Very glad to hear about the memory verse. We need to do our best.
There is going to be a famine, not of bread or of water but of the Word of God.
Therefore we need to encourage as many people as possible.

Thank you very much for your concern for His Kingdom.

Greetings in Jesus' name

HI,

my name is Philip, I am from Goa(India) and I have been working in Kuwait
(Arabian Gulf) for the past 26 years recently I was sacked from my last job
where I have been working for the past 21 years.

I was saved in 1999 and have been trying to memorise the bible verses, for the
past 6 months or so and have managed to memorise Psalms:
1,2,3,4,5,6,8,23,25,
27,30,91,92,117,121,123,127,128, & some scriptures here and there but not much.
I do a lot of bible reading mostly the old testament and I just love it. I even
sit up all night as I am jobless now and would love to do more of it,have just
started on psalm 119 which the longest psalm in the bible and am sort of not
sure if I will be able to do it. I have even down loaded the scripture memory
program on my computer but am finding it difficult to use it as I have very
little knowledge of computers. All I am asking you friends to keep me in your
prayers that I will be able to achieve the goal for the glory of his name and
one of these days I would like to narrate some of these psalms in our
congregation and encourage others to do the same.(i.e. to meditate on God's
words)

That's it for now...love you all & a big god bless 2 u all

I too find exercise as a great time to memorize and review scripture. I carry a
notecard w/ me that I can glance at to view a phrase and repeat it as I jog

Have any of you worked with a pictorial system for Scripture memory? I've
always done my Scripture memory by rote, which has worked fine, but I'm
wondering if I can memorize more verses over a shorter time period by using
pictures.

For example:

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

- Mt. 5:5

Today I would memorize this by repeating it over and over. However, after a
recent study of mnemonics I wonder if it might be better to attach pictures to
the above verse. Perhaps I would place a picture of a child for the word 'meek'
and a picture of the earth for the word 'earth'.

If anybody has any insight using such an approach especially re: existing
publications in print or on the web I would appreciate it. Thanks.

In Christ,

David Baldwin

Hello!

A good class that I have used for memorization is from Moody Bible Institute -
http://www.moody.edu/ - They have a course called Memorize the Word - over a
6-month period you memorize 72 verses (you can get extensions on the course

if needed). The course costs $49 - you can read a little about it in their

course catalog -
http://mmm.moody.edu/GenMoody/Media/MediaLibrary/2004_MDLC_catalog.pdf - then go
to page 58. They tell you how to memorize and review and it's a very thorough
class.

I took the course a few years back, but did not keep up with the review - so I
took it again and just finished it recently. It's really amazing how it does
help in Bible studies. Now I just need to keep at it.
