regretfully i just can't keep up with the mail. as a farewell message,
though, i'd like to add a word of encouragement to you all.
whatever method you use to be in the Word, to fill your soul with the Word,
planting it in your heart, fixing your mind on our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ, through the Word both Old and New Testaments, keep on with it!
some of you may be overwhelmed by all the methods and details that others
find
helpful. do what works for you. repetition out loud with your own voice
and
lips works for anyone and everyone. (example, pledge of allegiance.)
let your goal be to know Jesus, and to be drawn closer to the Father, to
know
His ways and His heart and His mind, to have "this attitude which was in
Christ Jesus." the goal is not to have quantity of verses or the best
method
or be the fastest and best at memorizing, or the cleverest. all those
things
may aid us, and thank God truly for anything that comes our way to assist us
in knowing Him. but remember the goal of it all is TO KNOW HIM and to be
TRANSFORMED by the renewing of our mind.
God bless you all.

One thing that has helped me with memorizing Luke and Acts 1-12 are software
programs entitled BBESS (Bible Bowl Electronic Study System) and PETS
(Personal Electronic Testing System). They areavailable from the North
American Christian Convention for $40 each. If you go to www.biblebowl.com,
you should be able to find the catalog from the NACC. This program allows
you
to test your knowledge by either filling in the blanks, completing the
verse,
recognition of verses by key words, and by references. Genesis will be
available from them in July.

I'd like to hear what you think about Pascal; I bought the book several
years ago, but put it on a shelf and haven't yet read it. Please tell me
about it. Thanks!

Subject: Hello
From: Nancy Mordhorst
I have just joined this list in the last week, and am enjoying the comments
and encouragement that is shared. I am a wife and mother of 3 sons, ages 21,
18, and 16, am very active in my church, busy with my family, and work full
time. I was challenged at a conference this spring to begin some intensive
efforts to commit passages of Scripture to memory.
I have begun to memorize the book of James since April. Right now I'm about
half way through Chapt. 3. I work on a verse, or short passage nearly every
day, and don't move on until I am confident with it. My goal is to have the
entire book memorized by the end of the summer. My progress is not
particularly fast, but I'm finding if I relax and am not too demanding on
myself, I look forward to working on it every day. I am excited and finding
wonderful blessing from truly meditating on the Word, day and night. The
process is renewing my mind, and filling moments during the day that have
been wasted in the past.
It simply isn't true that only the young can memorize well. I am finding
that the more I memorize, the easier it becomes, and that the discipline as
well as the renewing of my mind, is helping me in other areas of my "brain."
I would have never thought I could memorize a whole chapter and retain it
for long.
Thanks for the tip about coding the verses alphabetically, and by phrases.
All for Him, Nancy

Shirley,
Welcome to the list and to the family of God. February 18, 1997 is a
special day for me too. I had my youngest son, Peter, that day.
Thanks for your memorization tips. I love the Psalms too. It is
great that you are hiding so much of God's word in your heart.
Blessings,
Amy

I taught an 8 week class at church once on Bible memory. We took the book of
Titus, 46 verses. Several people, who had never done more than a verse or
two
before, completed the entire book in 8 weeks.
It would be a good place to start as it is short enough that it is very
doable. If you just do 3-4 verses a week you'll have the whole book done in
3-4 months. An entire book in just 3-4 months! How much did you get done in
the last 3-4 months? In the last year? 5 years?
After that I would go to Romans. I have found it to be particularly helpful
in
clearing junk out of the 'ole brain- particularly chapters 6 through 8.
But it doesn't really matter all that much what you work on. It really
doesn't. And it continues to amaze me how much that statement is true. All
scripture is literaly life changing when you memorize and meditate on it
this
way.
It might be good to pick a passage that your pastor is preaching a series on
or something your Sunday school class is working on. I did that in Romans.
The
Sunday school class I was in was studying Romans, just a small section each
week. I would memorize that section before class and would have so much more
to share during class discussion as God would give insight during the
memorization/meditation process. It also gave me motivation and incentive to
stay on schedule.

My name is Bethany Boothe, and I am a new member to biblememory. I look
forward to hearing encouraging stories and tips from other Christians who
have made Scripture memory a priority.
One of my mentors challenged me about 5 years ago to start memorizing
Scripture. She and I keep each other accountable for our Scripture memory.
As several of you have said, it does make a big difference in meditation
when you have first memorized Scripture. The Scripture goes around and
around in my mind and I am constantly learning new truths and insights.
I have passed information on to my mentor. She would like to join the
discussion group too, so you may be hearing from her soon.

Fellow Christians,
See notes below:
I think your zeal is also wonderful and just wanted to make sure we were all
on the same page. All of us are to "study to show ourselves approved unto
God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed". This is our commandment from
the Lord. Now, when it comes to knowing the right verse at the right time
that is not our responsibility. It is our response to His ability. Why
was the Holy Spirit given ? To guide us into all Truth and to bring to our
remembrance those things He has commanded us. Think about the disciples
after Pentecost. The Jewish leaders of that day were amazed and astonished
because they realized that these disciples had been with Jesus. They were
empowered as He was with the Holy Spirit when it came time to defend
( live ) the Truth. The entire 7th chapter of Acts is Stephen giving a great
summation of the history of God's activity with the Jews. And looked what
happened when he brought it to a
close, they were gritting their teeth they were so mad. (Convicted of sin)
So indeed memorize scriptures but that 1st chapter of Psalms says "He that
meditates on His word day and night. Not putting it into your head ( an
unsaved person can do that ) but meditating on it allows God to take it from
your head to your heart where it becomes a part of your life and active.
The Divine Nature ). This is the Rom 12:1&2 renewal that will take place so
that we prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Think of our Lord as a Mentor. Someone we want to learn from and to be our
resource for all that God ask of us. (Led by the Spirit and not walking
after the flesh). In Phil 2:13 God is (at this very moment) at work in you
both to will (want to) and do (enablement) of HIS good pleasure. So what is
our choice ? Let the indwelling Holy Spirit mold us into the "image of His
Son". That is His job so let's turn away from the "sins that so easily
besets" and allow God the Holy Spirit to conform us (i.e. chip away
everything that doesn't look like Christ). So let Him give you the hunger of
what to memorize and meditate on and to be obedient to. Heb 11:6 says that
if you and I are not in a "continuous state of dependency on God through
diligent faith , then we are not being pleasing to Him.
If you displease God It really doesn't matter who you please. And if you
please God
It really doesn't matter who you displease.
I hope that this is not coming on too strong, it's really meant to guide
(remind) us that He wants to be in control of our every aspect of life and
so yours and my choice should be to let HIM have that relationship with us
that shows us perfect love. He will be with us "in the waters" not keep us
from the waters (storms). He is a Jealous God and doesn't want other
"affections" to distract us from His plan for us.
Sorry if I'm too direct. I'm speaking as the Holy Spirit gives me
utterance. And I'm sure I need to work on my presentation.
The most effective memorization program would be one that you and someone
else agreed to be accountable to each other on a regular basis as to
memorizing scripture. That accountability factor will motivate you to take
the extra step to get it down solid because we know we're going to be tested
on it. Otherwise we won't give it the priority it deserves.
Thanks for your emails.

I really want to get going with my memorization of Scripture but one
question
is holding me back. Which Bible version should I memorize? I've narrowed it
down between the NASB (New American Standard Bible) and the NIV (New
International) Version. I've studied the differences between the two as
well
as other versions like KJV, NKJV, etc. I know this is a matter of personal
preference but I just needed a sounding board--you all. NASB is known for
it's literal or word-for-word translation of the manuscripts while the NIV
is
known for it's contemporary, thought-for-thought translation. I have about
equal access to both, I just need to be convinced on which version I should
commit myself to memorize. What do you think? Thanks for any input you can
pass along.
