Subject: Re: Memory Technique I am trying
From: Tracie Ogletree
First, you visualize what you reading, relating it to your life (past &
present). Using word association may help.
Letting the holy spirit guide you through it, then scripture will come
alive like never before.
Be Blessed !

Welcome to a fellow RN - once a nurse, always a nurse - it's what you ARE,

where we find that Scripture Memory is necessary. The Word in our hearts
does keep us from sin. God bless!

Subject: Re: memorizing a complete paragraph:
From: The Powells
Tim,
When memorizing a complete paragraph, I find it helpful to do some basic
analysis of the paragraph. Try to answer questions like, "What is the
topic sentence?" "Is there any repetition of ideas, phrases, words,
etc..."
"Are there any contrasts?" (ie. "Do not store up for yourselves
treasures on earth where moth and rust destroy and thieves break in and
steal. BUT [contrast] store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,
where moth and rust DO NOT destroy and thieves do NOT break in and
steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
Matt.6:19-21). This teaching of Jesus is an example of repetition with
contrast.
Other questions include:
"Are there any commands (or questions, promises, warnings...) in this
paragraph?"
"How does the speaker support his main idea or topic sentence in his
following statements?"
"What are some words that stand out to you in the paragraph you want to
memorize - that strike you, the reader the first or second time you read
the paragraph?"
"How many verses are there in this paragraph of Scripture? How many
sentence units?"
I find by asking basic questions like these helps me to see the
structure of a paragraph and memorize it more easily. If we can see the
author's "Train of thought" then we can more easily fill the individual
box cars (content of the verses) in memorization. However, having
stated this, the work of memorization is STILL hard work and requires
frequent review to keep it "fresh" in our memory. And as a previous
e-group participant stated, we need to rely much upon the help of the
Holy Spirit. Ultimately, the only way to memorize larger segments of
Scripture is by actually diving in by faith and doing it.
I hope that you find this helpful.

I've tried setting the verse to a rhythmic pattern. It didn't really work
when I tried to teach it to the kids I work with in the summer. I don't
know. Maybe my delivery was not that great. I guess nothing beats a
melody. But even though the kids had trouble learning it, I really learned
the verse well. Maybe reinforcing would help.

Does anyone use music to memorise scripture?
Recently participated in a one day seminar discussing how to work with
children, and one of the techniques for memorising verses was to use a
song. The verse used as an example still goes round and round in my
head: The Lord your God is the only God - He is faithful. He keeps His
promises to those who love Him, and obey His commands. Deuteronomy 7:9
God is faithful, uunh!

Hi. I am Kelley, and I am excited to begin to learn new ways to help in
my Bible memory. I am a 26 year old mother of two preschoolers, and I
devote a large portion of my time training them in the way they should
go (Prov. 22:6). In doing so I find it easy to neglect my own spiritual
growth. I have found that memorizing scripture makes it possible for me
to meditate on the Word day and night, even when I barely have time to
sit down. I keep a small spiral notebook in my Bible cover and if I
come across a truth that really speaks to me, I write it down to
memorize. In the front cover of the notebook I write the scripture
reference only so I can quiz myself periodically. It is small enough to
carry in my purse, so I use every moment of free time to check my
memory. For example, in lines at the grocery store, doctor's office, in
the car while driving, or any other "dead time" I whip open the front
cover and see which verses I have nailed down. I am looking forward to
hearing from the rest of you.
God bless,
Kelley Lammers

Thanks for that good tip. I'm going to use it. I've been

etc.) I need practical idea's like yours.
God bless you and your memory work.

That's an awesome idea, Kelley! I keep a little notebook for scripture
memory too, but I never thought of writing down the references to quiz
myself.
Right now, my friend and I are memorizing Ephesians together. We started
with the goal of memorizing the first chapter, and we broke it down into
3-4
verse sections which we memorize every day - 23 verses in one week. We get
together every day, write out the day's scriptures on index cards and
figure
out an appropriate rhythm for them (being musicians, this really helps us!)
and so, we are "rapping" Ephesians. Not only are the verses becoming
completely solid in our minds, we are having so much fun doing it! Every
time we're together (which is a lot) we practice and we're constantly
"performing" for our friends. (we get some weird looks when we do it as
we're walking down the streets of Boston!) We just started Wednesday, so
we
have seventeen verses memorized so far - and they're really solid. We'll
see how we are doing in a few weeks :) It's never been so easy and so fun
for me to memorize scripture!

Subject: Re: Memory Tips
From: "Lorry Schoenly"
Kelly, your ideas are great! That's what I call 'redeeming the time'. I
have
recently been impressed with the need to diligently seek to give over my
time
to the Lord and also noticed how much 'dead time' there is in even a very
busy
day. If you ask the Lord to show you where you have extra time, He will. He
showed me how I am wasting my lunchtime and drive time and dinner
prep/clean-up time. There is at least an hour of time in a day to devote to
bible memory 'on the fly'.
Like you, I carry my verses wherever I go. I use index cards on a metal
ring
rather than a notebook. That way I can carry around my current versework
and
not the larger pack of verses already in memory. I go over the 'already
memorized' verses once a week and put the verse into the current pack if I
find I don't know part of it.
I also have one index card that just lists all the verses and I can use it
to
go through the verses by memory. If I hesitate, I can look the verse up in
the
scripture. I find it helpful to recite the verses in the order they appear
in
scripture. It gives me a system for memory. Some folks group them by topic.
I, too, find that the best verses to memorize are those that the Lord has
given personal meaning to for you during your devotional time. AND - the
more
of these verses you have memorized, the more the Holy Spirit can bring to
mind
to instruct you and speak to you during prayer and meditation!
Some of these processes I picked up from others on this listserv. It is a
real
blessing to be a part of it and I hope you, too, are blessed, Kelly!

Subject: RE:so much fun!
From:
It is great to hear that everyone is memorizing.
I went through a discipleship course last year and at age 55 I
thought it was beyond my ability to memorize all the verses required
in the 20 week period. Praise the Lord it was a wonderful
experience. I used a spiral 4 x 6 card notebook and numbered the
verses by the subject 1 - 20, put the reference at the top and wrote
out the verse, carried that book with me everywhere. Of course,
having someone to recite them to is the secret. My daughter was
taking the course and since she was younger she was a great
inspiration.
Now that the class is over, I have typed them all without the
reference and typed the reference out seperately like I would the
verse. I decided since I had 20 subjects to use 5 colors, 4
subjects per color. At Kinko's, after I cut the verses and references
apart I paid them to laminate them and then we cut them all apart
again and all of them are stored in a fliptop box and we can refer to
them and use them over and over to teach others the verses we
learned. I believe there are about 95 verses. It was so much fun
going to these classes and actually memorizing that many verses.
The day may come when we won't have our Bibles and all these
verses will be there as comfort and/or teaching tools.
