Thanks for that idea, David!
I have to admit, since I first sent that email and now I'd slacked off a
bit
on my memorization because repetiton bores me. But your idea reminded me
that
I'd learned how to chant the psalms in the medeivial style ages ago. I've
been chanting them since then, and it's not dull at all! I'm also learning
them faster, maybe I'll only be out of trouble for one year! ;-)

Thanks for that encouragement! Though it's well worth it, memorizing
inevitably takes some work, but nice to know it can get easier rather than
harder. I've found that also in memorizing a lot of individual verses too.

From: "Roger E. Doriot"

Have any of you seen this site? All kinds of quizzes.
If you check the one on World Capitals, which uses Java,
, you'll see exactly the type of testing
and review system I think would be GREAT! For Scripture - and for math, and
teaching many other things.

It's great that you can "flip" the card as many times as you want to review
right then, but put in back in the "stack" if you don't have it learned
well - or take it out if you do. And then to be able to start over with all
of them whenever you want ..., well, it's about ideal for certain
memorizing, I think.

I'd like to get this program, and be able to just put in Scripture verses
on one side of the card, and references on the other, and use it on the
computer. I've written to them and they won't give it apparently. However,
it should not really be too complicated a program to do. I looked at the
"Source" on my browser. I don't understand all that I saw, but think
perhaps some of what is needed to know to program your own may be there. At
any rate, do any of you know some good programmers who might be able to
easily do this? Or do you know of some way to get such a program?

Trusting in the unlimited knowledge and prodigious creativity of this
group, I'm ...

Thanks! I appreciate the comments. That is what is helping me keep seeking.
I intend to represent God, and be open about Him to my generation. Which

Memorization of scripture will make it much easier for me. I will have
guidance stuck in my brain for ever. :)

Jeremy:

Only one suggestion I would add to others - if you can, get a friend to
memorize with you. It's just so much easier - there is accountability, and
you are able to encourage each other.

How wonderful to hear that there are still young people who have a thirst

Dear Drew,
I have been memorizing scripture for years. I find the best way is to read
the verse aloud five times. Then put your hand over the verse and see if
you can say it perfectly. If you can't, then repeat again until you can do
it. Memorization becomes much easier with practice. Once you get the verse
perfectly, go on to another verse, but come back to the first one in a few
days. People who start memorizing struggle at first, but in a short time
it
becomes easy and extremely rewarding. You might also get a helper to meet
with you thirty minutes a week. This keeps you accountable, and you will
move much faster.

was to write out the scripture, the entire scripture, including the book,

And
after writing it alot, I had discovered that I no longer needed to look at

I

Roger,
I use my verses to go to sleep by. I memorize a meditation from the
http:www.threethirtyclub.com site, then when I go to bed, I say the verses
until I fall to sleep. Some times I get through one ,meditation, now and
then two. Norman Vincent Peale used to teach us to do that. That way we
have all night to mull about God's word instead of the troubles of this
world. It give me a more cheerful attitude each day. He said do this, and
never listen to the news the last 30 minutes before sleep.

To Grace in Atlanta,
You mentioned you were struggling to be faithful..... Memorizing God's
Word
is a way to fight temptation. Jesus used scripture to ward off Satan.
119th Psalm says: "Thy word have I hidden in my heart that I might not sin
against thee. My scripture memorization has helped me through many
critical

I put some of my verses on my dresser at my bedside, where I see them and
review some before retiring, even if only quickly.

Hi Grace in Atlanta
Thankyou for your e-mail.I,m glad you were encouraged.I use to have a
strong
desire to control.I did not realise it for quite a long time but, my desire
to control came from a deep insecurity in me.It has only been since I
realise that my value & security is in God that I have been able to let
go.I've also found that God is able to make up what we didnot get when
growing up.
Your brother in Christ

When I was in college, I learned that if I read something
three times that I could remember it enough to score
high on a test; and I've learned by reading and rereading
that while I haven't learned many passages by heart,
I've retained enough that when I'm teaching the
Word I can find them with a Bible search engine in
relative ease.

I think I'll start today by reading and rereading selected
passages; so, I'll be able to store them in my memory.
I believe in the coming years that this program of Bible
memorization is going to become vital if only to hold
Alzheimer at bay! It does run in my family and a recent
study revealed that people who read are far less likely
to have it.

Hello my name is Dee. I record myself on cassett tape. I read a
scripture(s)
over & over pausing to give myself enough time to repeat it (while
listening
later) before going on to the next one.By doing this,I hear my own voice,&
it's familar rythem & pitch, and I not only see the words while reading them
but say them aloud & hear them so I feel like I'm getting it three times at
once & 2 of my 5 senses are being touched by these wonderful words of God.
This method was working very well for me untill my tape player broke. I'm
going to buy another soon.I also write & rewrite Bible verses. God bless
you
in your efforts.

Subject: Introduction
From: "Rev Donald McCorkindale"

Hi everyone...

I recently stumbled upon a reference to this list and have now joined.
Memory of Scripture fascinates me... we have lost so much that was second
nature to those who passed scripture from generation to generation. It is
quite incredible that Psalm 119, even with its acrostic style, ever reached
us!

I am a minister in the Church of Scotland, member of Mensa, and I use Mind
mapping and other memory techniques in my own preparation and learning...
and in some teaching...

So years ago, I watched a professional actor deliver the 'sermon on the
mount' - and that inspired me to commit the three chapters to memory. On
five ocassions now, I have 'preached the sermon on the mount' - from
memory... and to much effect

So that's some of what makes me tick... I look forward to sharing in this
list...

yours

Donald
