A couple of weeks ago I asked the group to hold me accountable for memorizing
Proverbs 12.  I'm happy to report that Proverbs 12 is now 'in the bag'.  I'm now
moving on to Proverbs 13 and am committing myself to having that chapter in
place and starting on Proverbs 14 by 3/11.

Hello, all!
I got a cassette recorder as I mentioned I would try, and I really like how it's
working out for me.  At first I recorded the reference, then the passage, then
the reference, then left a blank space for me to recite it myself when listening
to the tape.  Even though I read through the passage in my head to tell how long
to make the blank space, I wound up not leaving enough room pretty much every
time.  Also, since I have not really been reviewing what I've learned in the
past year, I found that listening to it once on the tape wasn't enough.
What I wound up doing was recording each passage, reference and scripture, three
times in a row.  When i played it back and used it for review, it really helped
me totally refresh all that I had learned.  I think 3 times is the perfect
strategy for me.  I just said it along with the tape, easy enough to do since I
made the recording and I was following my own usual rythm.  I really like this
method.  I guess I'm also kind of suprised at how well it's working for me.

How many of you have  thought of memorizing the book of Jonah?  It is
less than 50 verses,  dynamic,  exciting, and very deep.   I have
memorized and quoted 8 NT epistles so far,  and switching over to Jonah is like
taking a  "breather."  I plan to quote the book to our AWANA
kids on March 8.   There's adventure, emotions, a wonderful prayer
(chapter 2), the most effective 8 - word sermon of all time (chapter 3), and a
rather surprising ending.  There is focus on repentance,  faith, God's grace,
and arguably the greatest 5-word outburst  of Scripture -
"Salvation is of the Lord!"

plan on memorizing 40 new verses during this period. I would like to ask for

are accomplishing it, and the changes that have been made in their lives as a
result of hiding His word in their hearts.

I just wanted to say that I have begun using the Memlok program for verse
memorization, (and continue on passage memorization).  I have been very
impressed with the ease of the program, it is pretty intuitive, and I love being
able to type my scripture for review - it takes a few minutes longer, but I feel
I am getting a much more solid grasp by this manner.
 
To those who have suggested using a large font on cards to review while driving,
thank you very much.  I do this when I am in areas where I feel comfortable, I
drive 40 miles one way of rural roads to work, about 70 to class, so I have a
great deal of light, or no, traffic.  I still try to be extra careful, only
review, never learn new verses during this time, and make sure not to take more
than a quick glance at the reference.  Not only do I not want to cause anyone
else to have an accident, I do not wish to be stranded alone on deserted roads!
 
Question - someone made mention in an earlier post of a family who sang the
Psalms.  I would like to find a source for the music for the Psalms, preferably
an exact quotation of the Psalms.  Has anyone an idea of a source for this?

Hey, I think that's a cool idea.  I think memorizing OT accounts is cool.
Personally, I love the book of Job, but that would be a PROJECT.  Jonah looks
like fun.  Maybe that'll be my next "long" passage.
About long passages and smaller ones-  I think I'm going to work on long
passages when I'm exercising, like I'm doing now, and then tape up verses or
small passages near my bathroom and kitchen sinks.  I like working the long
ones, but sometimes it's tiring to focus on the same huge hunk of material all
the time.  I'm going to throw some new stuff in the mix, smaller passages that
will change to "review" status more quickly.

What is AWANA?

This is it. I could see the visions God is putting on His people. Its true that
it is this area that made Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 4:34,36) to see God in a

I tried accessing your site from work once before, but because of my hearing,
could not understand.  I have not yet had opportunity to try at home, where I
have a better headset.  It seems strange, in one sense, that even though my
hearing is bad, most time music comes through - I just have a difficult time
understanding the words. I play the piano, and used to sing, so music is a very
easy way for me to memorize.
 
I am in mid-terms with my internet classes this week, so may not have
opportunity to try until the weekend, but I will definately be trying.  I
memorize NKJV, but have also used KJV, and have not complaint with memorizing
the text - the primary reason I went with NKJ is for clarity with the unsaved,
but I grew up reading and loving the KJV.
 
Thanks for all the work you have put into your site - I know how time intensive
that it can be, but am praising God that there are people like you willing to
do so.

those are great hints.

they belong to a group of "mind mapping" as far as I know.

It is always helpful in memorizing build in other senses like hearing - make
noises, seeing - using pictures and so on.

while practicing use gross motor skills to engrain the information.  For example
when you are learning one that starts with 'the' as you recite the word 'the'
make a 't' with your body by sticking your arms out straight.
When learning one with that starts with 'a' as you recite 'a' use your arms to
make triangle over your head by touching your fingers together.

I know, sounds corny, but the movements can help trigger your memory.  It works
great with kids :)

Couple of possiblities for ya David...

You might try associating the "T" in "The" with the cross and associating
(linking) the cross with the verse or reference.  The "A" could be associated
with a triangle or mountain peak or something else that "A"
reminds you of, and then associating that with the verse.
  Also, a neat trick for learning spelling is to write it down wrong and then
cross it out several times, and then write it down correctly while capatilizing
the letters you're having problems with.  For instance, if you were having
problems spelling "receive" you would write down "recieve" and cross out the
"ie" and repeat this several times.  Then you would write down "recEIve"
serveral times to reinforce the correct spelling.  Perhaps this might work with
bible verses as well.
  You could also think of the content of the verse being accomplished by Jesus
(Jesus being "The" man and everyone else being just "A" man).  Then associate
the content of the verse with either Jesus or just common man depending on if
"The" or "A" is used.

Hi,
This is what I do to clarify those things for myself- Although I don't normally
recite this way, when I'm trying to remember a word that my mind wants to
replace with another word, I emphasize it by saying it louder and in an unusual
way when I'm memorizing.  First of all, I always do this out loud so that I can
physically hear it being emphasized.
Instead of "the" the way we normally say it, Say "thee."  Instead of "a" say a
hard "A".  It sounds boring, but out loud repitition and emphasis is how I do
it, and I'll spend time on those areas, too.  It's a "small" thing, and kind of
annoying, but if it takes extra time to get it right, so be it.

Thank you to each one who took the time to reply to my question regarding
keeping track of 'The' vs. 'A'.  I'd like to give you a little bit more
information about my current memory project.  If you're interested in the
particulars of learning lots of Bible verses, read on!  If not, well, the delete
button is only a twitch away!

SETTING THE STAGE
The goal is to memorize the book of Proverbs.  The first nine chapters went
fairly smoothly (although it did take 18 months) but once I got to chapter 10 I
was stymied.  How does one deal with apparently randomly organized verses?  If
you'll take a moment to open a Bible and flip through chapters
10-31 of Proverbs you'll see what I mean.  I chewed on this challenge for some
time and came to the conclusion that I would be served best not by concerning
myself with the order of the text but by focusing on attaching each verse with
its reference.  That way if you were to ask "What's Proverbs 10:13?" or "Quote
Proverbs 15:11" I could quote the appropriate verse.  The advantage to this is
that if I wanted to organize things topically at some point in the future (e.g.,
what verses in Proverbs deal with pride?) I could simply create lists of
appropriate references and memorize the lists.

DEALING WITH NUMBERS
The next question to answer was how to make reference numbers meaningful.
After all "A man is praised according to his wisdom, but men with warped minds
are despised" is meaningful but "12:18" doesn't really mean anything.
The key was Phonetic Numerals.  Phonetic Numerals attach consonant sounds to the
numbers 0-9.  I'll not go into details here other than to give a quick
example.   The number 1 equates to a 't' sound where as the number 2 equates
to 'n'.  Thus a word that equates to '12' is 'tongue'.  (You'll note that were
only talking phonetics here.  When you say 'tongue' you don't really pronounce
the 'g'.  Also, you don't worry about vowels at all.) If you'd like to learn

My words for 12:18 are 'Tongue' and 'Ivy'.  '12', as we already noted, equates
to 'Tongue' and 18 equates to 'Ivy'.

STORY TELLING
Hang with me here!  This may seem a bit esoteric but it really works!  Now I
need to relate the words created from each chapter and verse reference to the
text.  I do this by creating a story.  Let's take Proverbs 12:18 as an
example:

A man is praised according to his wisdom, but men with warped minds are
despised.

Now let's create a story that ties my reference words for 12:18 to the text:


A man's TONGUE sings PRAISES with the ACCORDION to the OWL.  The TONGUE sprouts
an IVY at WARP speed blowing the MINDS of SPIES looking on.

Hmm. Now I'm sure your saying "What an odd story."  And you're right!  But
notice how the story is structured.  Do you see the words in ALL CAPS?
These words are tied to the reference numbers and to individual words within the
verse.  TONGUE, for instance is tied to the chapter number 12 and IVY is ties to
verse number 18.  ACCORDIAN relates to according.  OWL relates to wisdom, and so
forth.

Now when quizzed on Proverbs 12:18 I think 'Tongue' and 'Ivy' and I'm reminded
of my story.  If I can recall the story, I can recall the verse!

CREATING ELEMENTS
Now it's time to take my verse and story combo to Supermemo.  For each pair of
verse and story I create about 25 separate elements.  For example one element
might read:

QUESTION: Proverbs 12:18 A man is praised according to his [.], but men with
warped minds are despised.

ANSWER: wisdom

Another element might read:
QUESTION Proverbs 12:18 A man's TONGUE sings PRAISES with the [.] to the OWL.
The TONGUE sprouts an IVY at WARP speed and blowing the MINDS of SPIES looking
on.

ANSWER: accordian

In this fashion I'm quizzed regularly on each portion of each verse and can
retain the entire verse in memory.

THE 'A' AND 'THE' QUESTION
I was having trouble remembering which verses start with 'A' and which with
'The'.  For example does Proverbs 12:2 begin 'A good man obtains favor from the
LORD.' or 'The good man obtains favor from the LORD.'?  Thanks to your excellent
suggestions I now have tools in my toolbox to attack such problems.  Thank you!

I'll be interested in the answers to this question.  I memorize from the KJV and
have no problem with 'the' and 'a', but struggle constantly with 'which'
and 'that'.  Also with 'will' and 'shall'.  Maybe there's an English major out
there who can give me some basic rules to help me know where each is
appropriate.  One thing I've done is to count the number of times each is used
in the passage I'm memorizing and in what order.  Like 2 shalls followed by 1
will then 3 shalls.  This seems to help some.

I have a some hints for scripture memory and a question.
 
Hints:

If you have a long verse, sometimes it's easier to remember by creating your own
little tune to fit the words.
Another thing that I sometimes will do is count the words in each phrase - like
with Ephesians 1:13:
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of
your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that
holy Spirit of promise, breaking it down to 5, 8, 5, 7, 9 so if you are
meditating on a verse in bed, you can easily use your fingers to make sure you
have all of the words in the verse.
Also - I was memorizing Acts 17:31 and had trouble with the introductory words
to the phrases:
Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in
righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance
unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.
So I plucked out the introductory words - Because, in the which, whereof, in
that and repeated them a few times to myself (I was alone) and then proceeded to
memorize the verse - and doing it that way was helpful to me.

I review my verses on the way to work (walking), starting with the new verses
and then the "older" verses. This way, once I get through the pack of verses,
then I can go back to the new verses and review them more.

My question is this - does anyone know of a good collection of scripture songs
in the King James Version - to use for bible memory?  Because it has saved some
time for me in remembering some verses because I already knew the verse (from a
song) and I just had to associate the reference with it.

I’ve started in on Proverbs 14.  I’d like to commit to starting on Chapter
15 by April 1st.

 

The work to memorize Proverbs has been arduous.  I estimate that by the time
I’ve finished I will have worked about 1500 hours.  (Appx 500 hrs. for 1-9,
which I’ve completed, and 1000 hrs for 10-31, which I’m currently working
on.) But the rewards have already been tremendous.  And the lifelong rewards
will be astronomical. 

 

I chose to memorize Proverbs 10-31 because God convicted me that I needed to get
wisdom.  Trust me when I say I still have a long way to go!  Whatever wisdom may
be, it is far off and most profound- who can discover it?  Ecc 7:24.  But God
has taught me so much.  Just this morning he showed me verse after verse that
was like direct career advice – far better advice than I could ever receive from
a counselor.  Well, I guess that’s because I received the advice from the
Counselor – the Holy Spirit.  The point is, a commitment on my part to be
immersed in his Word has been repaid manifold. My encouragement to each of you
is that he will also reward you for the time you spend in his Word.

I posted a request for help with dealing with ‘The’ and ‘A’ in memory work on
three separate email lists.  I thought I’d share the responses from each of
those lists as many have already been very helpful.

 

Once in 1 Peter, in chapter 2, I had a hard time with, 'that' and 'so that'.

So I marked them and then noticed the order, like ('so that', 'that', 'that',
'so that'). Once I got the order straight then I reviewed my chapters everyday
for a few months. Now it is never a problem. I hope that helps!

 

You might try associating the "T" in "The" with the cross and associating
(linking) the cross with the verse or reference. The "A" could be associated
with a triangle or mountain peak or something else that "A"
reminds you of, and then associating that with the verse.

 

You could also think of the content of the verse being accomplished by Jesus
(Jesus being "The" man and everyone else being just "A" man). Then associate the
content of the verse with either Jesus or just common man depending on if "The"
or "A" is used.

when you are learning one that starts with 'the' as you recite the word 'the'
make a 't' with your body by sticking your arms out straight.
When learning one with that starts with 'a' as you recite 'a' use your arms to
make triangle over your head by touching your fingers together.

next to those that have The.

 

If you have a lot of occurrences of each word then the problem with using the
same mnemonic image for each word is that they will all run together and cause
confusion. Learning the vocabulary of languages that have gender presents the
same problem as there are only two or three genders for all words.

A technique that works well for that is to pick an area of a town you know well
and hook the mnemonic for the word somewhere in that area. For example, you
could pick a part of your hometown for "a" situations and another part for "the"
situations. If the sentence uses "a" then you would imagine the scene occuring
somewhere in the "a" part of town. Do the same in the other part of town for the
"the" situations. Because you can use different places in the same area, you get
the variety you need for uniqueness.

 

I like the story system also but use sound alike phrases that can be
visualized.  As an example, taking Proverbs 12:18, I would use "tone-deaf"
as my phonetic cue.  Then substituting sound alike words "A mantis prays for
accordion wisdom.  Butt men with warped minds are despised."  I would visualize
a relative of mine trying to sing this phrase who is tone deaf.  I love her but
it hurts even visualizing her trying to sing this.  I would also visualize a
mantis praying with his accordion and degenerate butt men being despised for
their actions by numerous insulted ladies with shapely backsides.

Hello there, I am just curious about how some people memorize.  I'm trying to
set a goal for myself to start my day by going over Acts, which is what I'm
trying to memorize currently, and to learn at least one to two more verses
daily.  I'm just wondering how most of you memorize and review, speaking in
terms of large books like Acts.  I always want to go over everything that I've
learned before going forward, but it takes so long and I'm easily distracted by
the children...I have 2(and one on the way), and just the business of home life,
etc.  I really want to stick to my goal this time.  I always seem to do well for
a couple of days and then my bible gets left in the car or some such thing and
I'm off track again.  Can some of you share your routines for accomplishing
memory goals.  Especially those of you with families or limited time.  I do
carry a small pocket bible and that helps.  I am trying to use mornings as my
best time, because I work from home at night, most nights.  I've been sick a lot
too over the last few months which doesn't help in keeping motivated.  One funny
thing is that I home school my five year old and each week she learns a new
verse, which I always seem to memorize right along with her.  I guess I think
it's funny, because even when I feel that I'm slacking, God gets His word into
me somehow...even if the passages are smaller.  I just need some good
suggestions for sticking to my goal.  Thanks!!

I've been memorizing Scripture for a few years now, and it has been
life-changing for me.  I hope it will be for you, too. 

A smile came accross my face as I read that you are originally from Scotland. 
My wife and I took a holiday there for our honeymoon, in the summer of 2002.  We
had a wonderful time, and the people we met were very warm and hospitable.  We

When I do Scripture memory review:
--It's just about the first thing I do each morning.  This is very consistent
and I rarely fail to get in my review work each day.  The reason for that is
because my review process is such that if I should fail to review one day I have
to do double duty the next day.  Very painful!

When I work on new Scripture:
--It's just about the last thing I do each night - well, those nights I do it!
I could certainly use more discipline in learning new Scripture.  I tend to go
in fits and starts.

An efficient review process:
I think it's important to break memory work up into numerous elements (I'll call
them 'bits and pieces') and then only review each 'bit and piece' as often as
necessary to keep it in memory.  Let me give an example of a 'bit'
and a 'piece':

Proverbs 11:11
Through the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the
wicked it is destroyed.


I'll break the above verse up into a dozen different pieces. Some of which are
large ('piece'):

Quote:
Q: Fill in the blank -
[...]
but by the mouth of the wicked it is destroyed.

A: Through the blessing of the upright a city is exalted,

And some of which are quite small ('bit'):

Quote:
Q: Fill in the blank -
Through the blessing of the upright a [...]is exalted, but by the mouth of the
wicked it is destroyed.

A: city

With regards to review I attempt to review each element (or each 'bit and
piece') only as often as necessary to keep it lodged in memory.  By doing this I
keep my review time relatively short which allows more time for memorizing new
Scripture.

To assist me in generating elements ('bits and pieces') and to assist in
estimating when I need to review these elements, I use SuperMemo - a software
program specifically designed to empower the user to keep information in long
term memory.

Hello there, I am just curious about how some people memorize.  I'm trying to
set a goal for myself to start my day by going over Acts, which is what I'm
trying to memorize currently, and to learn at least one to two more verses
daily.  I'm just wondering how most of you memorize and review, speaking in
terms of large books like Acts.  I always want to go over everything that I've
learned before going forward, but it takes so long and I'm easily distracted by
the children...I have 2(and one on the way), and just the business of home life,
etc.  I really want to stick to my goal this time.  I always seem to do well for
a couple of days and then my bible gets left in the car or some such thing and
I'm off track again.  Can some of you share your routines for accomplishing
memory goals.  Especially those of you with families or limited time.  I do
carry a small pocket bible and that helps.  I am trying to use mornings as my
best time, because I work from home at night, most nights.  I've been sick a lot
too over the last few months which doesn't help in keeping motivated.  One funny
thing is that I home school my five year old and each week she learns a new
verse, which I always seem to memorize right along with her.  I guess I think
it's funny, because even when I feel that I'm slacking, God gets His word into
me somehow...even if the passages are smaller.  I just need some good
suggestions for sticking to my goal.  Thanks!!

Hello everyone,

I've thought about the "The" "A" thing for a while and I'm beginning to think
that it really doesn't matter. To be realistic, it's not like the Bible has been
lost and people our hanging off our every word for whether the word is a "The"
or "A" (unless it is important).

Also, for example, I came across the same problem with grammer. Right now I'm
memorizing Collossians. Let me try to recite Colossians 1:3 from memory:

(MEMORY) "We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying
for you always."

Now let's see what it really is:

(BIBLE) "We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying
always for you,"


So there's a bit of a mixup in grammar. The way the KJV talks is old-grammar, we
rarely ever use much of it in modern English. Anyone else feeling the same way
as me? Both are 100% accurate, there's just a different style of grammar. It's
the same with something like Colossians 1:4 "Since we heard of your faith..." I
tend to say "Since we have heard of your faith."

Moral of the explation: I don't think 100% word accuracy is necessary if it
doesn't change the context or meaning at all.

Exactly why I do MemLok. I've done lots of long passages. But the time to
"maintain" was a killer. I believe "review" is a "soul" thing...as in
"mental...brain", not a "spiritual" thing. So, I'm not real excited about
spending 20+ minutes a day reviewing to maintain. I'd rather "meditate/apply"
not be "rattling off". I am NOT saying that is a bad thing...both long and short
passage memorization DEFINITELY have their place.

Personally, I consistently spend 5 minutes a day, 5 days a week. The rotating
review in MemLok (automated and allows every member of your family to have their
own verses - 550 topics/700 verses NIV, KJV, NKJ or NASB) remains 5 minutes a
day at all times, and you do take the weekends off. By the way, Steve Simpson -
moderator - DID ask me to jump in every once in a while and tell about Memlok)
:)

End result? With one verse a week (suggested doing the Personal Notes to record
what the Lord is telling you or the Meditation sheet so you're building a
journal of His workings in your life - once a week having a "Quiet Time" around
the chapter from which the verse comes)......

You will be learning at least one key verse EVERY OT book, chapter of Proverbs,
tons of Psalms, and plenty of verses from EVERY chapter of the New Testament.

That is the equivalent of learning about 30 passages of 23 verses each.
And, your "keep up with them" time remains 5 minutes a day. Do you want to keep
up with 30 passages of 23 verses, but miss out on hundreds of other key chapters
and verses, while spending lots of time?

First, what a great yet challenging book to memorize!  Have you memorized much
before? How far are you into Acts already?

I think memorizing larger chunks of material is a lot different then learning
scattered verses. Here are some thoughts that might help you.
Especially regarding reviewing the material you've already learned.

First, it's good to forget!

I've found that if I learn new material and review it too much without letting
it sit I don't learn it as well long term.  I typically find that the best way
to really get new material into long term memory is to: 1) Learn it 2) Let it
sit until I've actually forgotten parts of it 3) Re-Learn it 4) Repeat as
neccessary. :)

After a while you'll start to realize that even after not looking at it for a
week the re-learning process has turned into a review.

It sounds like everytime you sit down to learn a couple of verses you first
review everything you've learned.  That's easy for a couple of chapters and then
you start taking all of your time to review and you can't learn new material.

Here is what I would do:

Just worry about one chapter at a time. Break the chapter down to sections (by
topic, event or the section headings in your bible) and then break each section
down into paragraphs.

Work on the first paragraph until you feel you know it. After you are done with
that move onto the next paragraph. Don't worry about the first!

Once  you get 2 or 3 paragraphs learned. Then go back and try putting all three
of them together. (Don't worry if you have to re-learn parts of the earlier
paragraphs, it's a good thing...honest!).

Work your way through the chapter this way.

After you have finished a couple chapters I'd try setting a Learn, Re-Learn,
Review schedule. Something like this:

1) Learn chapter 3
2) Re-learn chapter 2
3) Review Chapter 1
4) Learn chapter 4
5) Re-Learn chapter 3
6) Review chapter 2
7) Learn chapter 5
8) Re-Learn Chapter 4
9) Review Chapter 3
10) Learn Chapter 6

At some point you'd want to insert 2nd and 3rd reviews for the the earlier
chapters. Each time you go over a chapter let it sit longer. Eventually you'll
pick up a chapter you haven't looked at in weeks and be surprised that you
remember most of it!

Remember that the goal is to remember it for the LONG term.

Sorry if this is long and too scattered in my thoughts! I hope it makes sense

I've checked out the memlok website before, but since I don't have a lot of time
to get on the internet, etc. I did not pursue downloading it or anything.  I
will look at it again, because so many people have mentioned it in this group.
It must be a reliable way to memorize.  I also think that memorizing key verses
throughout scripture is valuable.  I like to attempt Psalms and books of the
bible, but I'm open to other approaches, as long as it is all God's wordSmiley
emoticon.  I will definitely check out memlock. Thanks!!
