Subject: Hi All
From: "Ron Thibeault"
Hi all,
My name is Ron Thibeault and am glad to be a part of this Scripture memory
program. It is always such a blessing memorizing Scripture. When I was in
Seminary I started to memorize Psalms and was so blessed to make it a part
of my quiet time of memorizing and meditations (M & M's). We should eat M
&
M's everyday.
I have recently started to memorize 1 Thessalonians and am wondering if
there are any people out there doing the same. It would be great to find
someone to talk about this and possibly encourage one another with. If you
would like to contact me through direct e-mail my address is
umdctsnuri.net
. I am also on ICQ # 19207000. Feel free to contact me in either place.
Take care and God Bless,
Ron Thibeault

It's tough, I know. The more your mind gets preoccupied with all
sorts of other things, the tougher it is to memorize. But, as I
mentioned a couple months ago, sometimes it's WHAT you are memorizing
that makes a big difference. For example, today I got ticked at my
wife, and then had to battle with many stupid and unpleasant thoughts.
So I found that memorizing Eph. 5:25 - 33 is easy. Or when I'm in a
scarey situation, it's relatively easy to recall 2 Tim 1:7. But
memorizing tongue twisters like Romans 5:15 - 19? It's taking
forever! Plus, I think that most of our English versions are pretty
stilted. Tried to find some rhymning Bibles, but they're more like
paraphrases than translations (e.g., the Scottish Psalter).
Take care!

David,
I admire your dedication. If I were to offer any wisdom from my own
experience, take more time with each single verse. I try for 2 verses a
week (which is ambitious). That helps insure that I give time to each to
meditate and be open to the Father's revelation. It is easy to get into
memorizing for memory's sake and from one who's been there a gentle
warning. If you memorize 2 verses a week, that's over a hundred a year and
you will know them better and will have given yourself opportunity to put
these verses into practice in your life.
With love and encouragement,

hi, i just joined this list and the welcome email said to send out an
introduction.
hi, i'm liz :)
i'm a sophomore at MIT, where God is doing some amazing things.
i found this website when i was looking for something else, and i saw the
Bible memory software, downloaded it, and have been using it for a little
while. i got the first email about this list a while ago, but hadn't done
anything about it until now.
i have been a Christian for 18 years, which, obviously, is most of my life.
i went through the SPARKS and AWANA programs at church, which basically was
a program for 1-6 graders. the main point of the program was to memorize
scripture...you got so many points for each verse. i graduated both of
those programs with honors, and so i obviously had alot of verses
memorized,
maybe 5-6 a week for 5 years. well, that was then. now i hardly remember
any of them. i had recently begun to realize that i need to memorize more
scripture, or i will be fighting the battle without a sword.
so that's why i'm here.
so who else is on this list? if it's not proper to send stuff out about
yourself again to the whole list, just email me.

All I know of the CEV was from a magazine advertisement promoting it. They
listed a particular Scripture as an example of how good their translation
is. Sorry I don't remember now which Scripture it was but I did check it
out and found that, though it certainly flowed and was "readable" it
unfortunately bore very little resemblance to the original!
It was really rather shocking, being that that was the Scripture they used
to advertise the CEV with. Made me wonder if they thought providing
"inspiration" and "warm feelings" was as important as conveying the actual
words of God.
I'd be careful about the CEV, if accuracy is important to you.

Have you considered the Contemporary English Bible (CEV) I think it is
quite a nice modern translated, translated in the same spirit that the King
James Bible was -- to put the accurate meaning of the ancient text into the
current-day speech of the people. I find it easier to memorize "new" stuff
from the CEV.
If it is something very familiar from the King James, I tend not to want to
re-learn it, even if the wording is less cumbersome. But if it is a new
section I want to memorize, the CEV version is easier for me to "get into
my head". Might be worth a try for some of you others.

I am not certain what I am getting into. I am 72 years old. It
is not easy to make 72 these days. There are so many who aren't
making it. Actually I guess it is easy for most to make, but
most aren't reading, let alone memorizing the bible.
If I can learn one verse I will be happy. If I can learn two
that will be a miracle. Maybe someone on this list can pick out
some good verses to memorize.
Maybe I am too old for this list. What I like to do with the
Bible, no matter what translation I am reading, is when I come to

Welcome, Lester.
If you can read and think, you are not too old. For me, the primary purpose
of
memorization is not to stuff information into the brain. It is to meditate
on
the Word; to ruminate it over and over, getting every last morsel of truth
and
goodness out of it that we can.
Long term retention does get harder as one ages so I would encourage you to
not worry that much about it. Go for the process. Work on a verse or short
passage until you have it in short term retention- however long it takes.
Just
be consistent, every day, and work on it several times throughout the day.
God Bless.

I John 5:11,12
Assurance of answered prayer
John 16:24
Assurance of victory
I Cor. 10:13

Quickest way to get discouraged is to try to do it too quickly. Slow and

Though I've memorized some scripture in the past, I failed to make it a

Therefore I've forgotten some of what I previously memorized.
But, as I mentioned, I'm very excited about making this a significate

to find these wonderful old Scriptures flowing from my mind and my tongue
when
I do finally get them "stuck in there"! And you know what else? (My
husband
says I'm a "little peculiar!") But it's just such an awesome feeling to
know
those are the exact, same words so many of the precious old saints from so
many past generations have loved and learned and rehearsed and depended on!
And yes, even Jesus learned those same Old Testament Scriptures! And when
I
say them, I feel a new sense of closeness with them all - a certain feeling
that "we are ONE in the Body".
Now, age doesn't have a THING to do with THAT, does it? You are in the
RIGHT
PLACE!.
Welcome - with a full heart!

Vinh - I've found the same thing true - that when you NEED the Scripture,
it
is much more easy to memorize it - but isn't it wonderful the way God calls
the THOUGHT of the Scripture to your mind just when you need it!? And
that
wouldn't be true if you haven't read it before to be familiar with it. I
guess I believe that just reading the Word starts the memorization process
-
the more we read it of course the more familiar we are with it, and then it
does seem to be so much easier to memorize the words.
I don't know what to tell you about Romans 5:15-19. I haven't tackled that
one yet! I guess that just taking one phrase at a time is the way to go
about
it - and repetition, repetition, repetition!. God bless!

Subject: Re: Memorising
From:
I have been very busy with the class on "How to Study the Bible for
Yourself"
which I am teaching at my church. We are in the sixth week, and the ladies
say that they are learning lots and are enjoying it. I know that I have
truly
enjoyed preparing the program and presenting it. But it has taken much of
my
time, and I haven't spent the time memorizing as I would like to. What I
HAVE
been doing is memorizing the passages which we are studying in Sunday
School -
and right now that happens to be the Psalms.
That has helped me because really they have been Psalms which I memorized
as a
child, but had to re-do them - it's surprising that you forget - not the
message or theme, but the order of the words. I did use some of the ideas
which have appeared in the letters to help me, I had not tried some of them
before. It was wonderful! For instance, in Psalm 19, which is one of
those I
had to re-learn, verses 7- 9 have a listing of the attributes of the Word,
and
I had a time trying to keep them in order. I took the first letter of the
phrase, (law = L) and imagined an animal beginning with that letter (a
lion)
and hung a great big number around its neck (#1) and then imagined it doing
something which would help me remember the phrase.
Verse 7a - A Lion with #1 on its neck, a crown on its head with 100%
flashing
on it (for perfect) and batting a shoe sole around so that it turns on a
string (converting the soul).
Verse 7b- A tiger pacing back and forth guarding a safe which has an owl
with
large glasses sitting on it. (#2 sign around its neck)
Verse 8a - a Statue performing a right-hand turn signal with a large
thumping
heart in the middle of her chest with a great smile on it. (#3).
Verse 8b - a large Cow, drinking milk which has "100% Pure" on the glass,
and
has extremely large glasses on. (#4)
Verse 9a - A large fish sweeping a floor which runs off into the distance,
seeming to have no end. (#5).
Verse 9b - A black robed Judge holding up a sign in each hand with "True"
written on one, and "Right" written on the other. (#6).
This may seem silly, but it really did help me keep the order, and the
attributes and benefits correctly linked.
I have never tried this strategy before. Now I see that it's especially
helpful with lists or linking phrases such as this one. Whoever sent the
suggestion, I thank you, and I hope this situation will help some one else.
By the way - I have managed to memorize a Psalm a day last week and this
Week
I'm trying to do the same.
God bless all of you.

Welcome to the list! I was excited to learn of your new church. Many
years
ago, my family participated in the establishment of a small mission
fellowship
in an under-evangelized region of the country - what a tremendous
experience
for me and for my children. Now we live in the great "Bible Belt" of the
South, and have so many advantages at our church. But there is nothing
like
the great closeness and dependence which develops between struggling
believers
in an area which is so needy of the Gospel! My children are adults with
youngsters of their own now, but they have been refined by that experience.
They benefited from the "AWANAS" program too.
I would speak a word to you about the importance of Scripture Memory for
the
youngsters in your new fellowship. So many churches have left this out of
their efforts these days, and as a product of a church and a time when that
WAS the major effort for children, I know how important it has been for me.
No matter what other churches do, please make sure that this plays a big
part
in your fellowship. God will truly bless you and your congre-
gation, and certainly the young ones who are influenced by it, if you do.
God bless you and your new fellowship!

Hello,
My name is Deborah J. Adams Brown. I live in Akron, Oh. I joined this
list because I am very interested in memorizing verses. I am a 5th
grade
Sunday school teacher. We have memory verses that we use in our
lessons,
but when a student asks you where do you find a scripture that says
something about this or that, I would like to be able to tell them where
instead of going to the Concordance or telling them I'll find it and
bring
it to you next week. We are not promised a next week.
Therefore, I thank God for this list. It will encourage me to be
persistent and diligent.
BTW, I am a grandmother of 8 and I work at the University of Akron, in
Ohio.
Have a wonderfully blessed day!

I am writing to thank everyone who sent a letter to me, either on
the bibleman board or in a private email. I have the
memorization program downloaded and running, but I am not quite
certain yet what it does.
That brings up a problem about memorizing parts of the Bible.
The computer is a help, but it is also an obstacle. A computer
starts taking on a life of its own. At least I have one Bible
verse to be with me in all circumstances. "In every thing give
thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning
you," 1 Thessalonians 5:18. There are some other good verses
right next to that, but I will stick to the guidelines and only
quote one.
God Bless, Lester Tinnin

Hi, Jen. Welcome to the list. I've had lots of help from these dear folks
whether they know they've helped or not. I'm Baptist. I learned a long
time
ago though that if one is truly born again they don't need a label. I've
found peace, joy, fellowship, and great evangelistic preaching in other
churches just as I have in my own. I'm learning (even at my age of 62!) to
say "I'm a Believer!" when people ask, and then I proceed to invite them to
our services.
Two things I've loved about Baptists are the belief in the inerrancy of the
Scripture, and the memorization programs we've sponsored for our youngsters
in
the past. I wish that last part were still true, but I'm afraid it's not.
I
am so very thankful that as a "thrown-away" kid (I lived in so many
different
homes that I've forgotton some of them!) I spent some very important
formative
years in a Christian home where the local Baptist church became my door to
salvation. I learned about God's love and family love in that home. My
vagabond childhood might have been intended by Satan for evil, "but God
meant
it for good!"
Thank God for good, evangelical, outreaching churches of any denomination!

My name's Graham and with my wife Elaine I attend a small Baptist Church in
West Sussex, S.E. England. I love being a Baptist. Unlike many Christians
nowadays who seem to have a problem with belonging to a denomination, I
treasure it. I'm not exclusive in my fellowship or arrogant about being a
Baptist, but I do thank God for a) the historical roots it gives me, b) the
sense of identity it gives me and c) the Short-label it supplies to save me
saying, "well, I believe this... and this... and this..." Denominations can

I am Baptist and will remain one as long as they hold a high view of
scripture as they do. We strive to hold this ideal in both theory and
practice. Many churches pay tribute to God's Word but then rely on the
wisdom of men or current social trends to guide their church. I wondered
why so many churches are struggling with current social issues when the
Bible speaks clearly in these areas, then it dawned on me that these
churches had forsaken God's Word as the final authority for their church
and are dealing with these issues now in the flawed wisdom of men. It is
after all a faith issue, trusting God's Word is relevant and living and to
be trusted even in these confusing times of social upheaval. As Steve
Fararr states in his book "Point Man" our society has lost it's compass or
sense of direction and a church is in the same dilemma if they forsake the
wisdom of God recorded in His Word. Sorry, got carried away!

Hi Kate! Welcome to the list. You will get lots of help and encouragement
here.
I was listening to "Focus on the Family" this afternoon and the entire
broadcast was about teens, and the efforts the good Christian ambassadors
your
age are making by doing exactly what you're doing - taking your Bible with
you
to school. I learned something I had not known before - that it is
actually
legal for students to start Bible studies in their schools. You might want
to
go to the FOTF website to find transcripts of this broadcast if you didn't
hear it. I was impressed! They talked about making "radical" decisions
for
Christ. I have been studying in Acts myself, and after our church just had
a
weeklong evangelistic "revival" service, I wondered what is different in
our
churches today, and in the Christians today. Those folks "set the world on
fire!" We barely make any difference. I finally think I have realized
what
is missing today - and that is PASSION! I think the folks on the radio
today
talked about "radical" decisions in the same vein that I have been learning
about passion. Maybe we're all on the same track for a change. I teach
special Bible studies for the ladies at my church, and my next effort
(after I
finish my current one on "How to Study the Bible") will be on the subject
of
Passion. I have begun preparing that material already by doing word
searches
on topics like "zeal", etc.
By the way - I'm 62 years old - and this new insight I'm having on passion
has
made me feel 15 again! I' m a Registered Nurse, have been for many years,
and
just recently retired (September, actually). Isn't it a wonderful thing
that
you at the beginning of your life and preparing for the future, me at the
end
of my career, but we're both into something great, and it's exactly the
same -
the Living Word of Christ!
God bless!

If you want to memorise larger portions, try some short and/or well-known
psalms! I am so glad I was taught Psalm 1 and Psalm 23 and Psalm 100 when I
was a child.
" My faith means so much to me, and it's nice to know that I can go into my

Me too, but I take the psalms into a dailing reading group in Hebrew. I'm
still very slow at the Hebrew. [I'm a music teacher]
"I hope that memorizing scripture will help me share my faith with my
friends and make an impact in my school."
It is great to know God's Word, because it comes into yoru mind at just the
right time, when something is relevant to a particular passage. You can't
use it, if it ain't in your head!
Great to have you in the group.
