Hello, My name is Liz and I'm a homeschooling mother of 5 girls. I also run a
daycare in my home and often have children here until 8:00 in the evening. I've
been trying to memorize scripture, but by the time I've gotten my house cleaned
up at night, I sit down with bible open and fall asleep before I've finished
reading the first passage. I'm trying to organize my time because it's so much
more important to know the word of God. I'm open to any
suggestions.-----Original Message-----

Hi Angela,

My name is Mike Justice, and I am blind from an hereditary condition called
retinitis pigmentosa. I will be 55 this year, and will have been married for
twenty-five years in July. I turned my life over to Christ in 1974 when I was
twenty-seven, and started to grow in grace and knowledge when I began attending
a local church in 1975. I have used recorded bibles (both 33rpm records and
cassettes) since 1976. Around 1991, I began using the Online Bible program with
a speech output computer. I am currently using the Millenium edition of the
Online bible on Windows98, with JAWS speech software. The Online bible is
available as a free download from www.OnlineBible.net with a variety of modules
to enhance the basic package. With the Online bible, I have been able to perform
a variety of scripture searches, look at the definitions through the Strong's
numbers, see original Hebrew or Greek words, and study some related commentaries
or other references. I can use the Online bible to just read, starting and
stopping at my choice of locations in the scripture, almost as if I was able to
sight-read print for myself. Just as a side note, Larry Pierce is a pastor in
Winterborne, Ontario who developed the Online Bible.

I have not done a lot of memorization, except in the early 1990's when I used
Braille and repetitive listening to recorded verses, for memorizing required
verses for the Evangelism Explosion materials as I participated in my church's
program for two years. My preference, is bible study to better understand God's
word, for Sunday school and church services, for Wednesday prayer meetings with
Bible studies that I led in past years at my church, and for general renewing of
my mind to be more like Christ and less like the world. In personal study, and
from listening to Christian radio and messages at church, the exposure to
scripture has placed some verses in my memory, with no conscious effort to
memorize. Often these verses will come to mind when I am in conversation, and
it is a delight to be able to share the word of God with believers and
non-believers when the Lord's timing is right.

May you be encouraged by other Christian contacts, and may the Lord use you in
His unique design of intent for only you.

Watching and praying until His return,
Mike Justice.

From: James Kephart

Dear Melody,

I have coached many people to memorize verses. Many think they are too old or
that they can't memorize anymore. But if they try it gets easier and easier.
The mind is a wonderful instrument God gave us. Unlike computors the memory
never runs out. I have never had a message "out of memory" from my brain. I am
69 years old, and because I continually use my brain, I memorize better now than
when I was young. Get someone to help you. Read the verse aloud. Say it. You
will be surprized how easy it gets. The joyous thing is that God will probably
make a way for you to use those verses. They will probably bear fruit. They
always do for me.

good plan for starting a group at http://www.threethirtyclub.com. If your church

Subject: Brian;s remarks on memorizing
From: James Kephart

Dear Brian,

Don't worry about memorizing the chapters, verses, Jesus quoted a lot of
scripture and never did that. If you forget where the verses are located, they
are easily found. I recommend plain old rote memorization. Just like you did
to learn the alphabet and times tables. Pick out your chapter. Memorize the
first verse. I like to read it 5 time aloud. That way my ears, eyes, mouth,
and brain have heard, seen, said, and thought it. I can usually say the verse
without looking then. If not, I repeat. When I have done the first verse I
sort of forget it awhile and go the the second, then third etc. When I am
through the chapter I go to the first again. I never start stringing verses
together until I have them all down pat. That generally takes 4 or 5 times
through. But the next time on each verse is much easier. I can do a 20 verse
chapter and have it word perfect in about 3 weeks, just working a few minutes a
day. After I can string them all together, I use that chapter for going to
sleep at night for a month or so. Really makes for peaceful sleep. I just
finished the 11th Meditation on worry. It is found at
http://www.threethirtyclub.com and is free to print out. It is easily learned
and is a wonderful scripture to go to sleep with. I hope this helps. If not I
would be glad to further explain. The more you do it, the easier it gets.

To Melody,
It isn't that hard to memorize large selections such as chapters. Just read one
verse 5 times aloud. See if you can say it. If not read it again and keep
trying until you can say the first verse. Then forget it until you get the next
verse. Do all the verses once, then go back to the first. You will be
surprized how easy it is to get the first again. Go over them all one at a
time. You will soon be comfortable with every verse. That is when you start
stringing them together. I teach a group of seniors three verses
every Wed nit that way. I would bet I could teach you three verses in 10
minutes. What I am saying is you can do it.

From: biblet

Liz,

My wife and I homeschool our kids also. I would encourage you to memorize Bible
verses with your kids as part of the homeschool curriculum. I have worked with
my kids for a few months now and they have picked up a lot of verses from
Proverbs. Even if they can't memorize them verbatim after a few weeks, they
still can relate to you the gist of the verses.

I know I need to make a commitment to spend time with my kids, as well as
spending time on my own. I tend to do well for 2 weeks and then let things slip
for a few more weeks. But, I do believe that it is an important part of
Christian life to impart wisdom to your family.

I have written Bible memorization software with the homeschool family in mind.
It may make the memorization process more enjoyable. I have included the whole
text from the King James, the American Standard and the NIV inside the software.
You can choose the verses you want, save them to a file and then play games to
memorize them. It has a Report Card feature where you can check your progress.
It actually reads the Bible verses to you while you play the games. You can
choose either an animated character or just a voice. Download the demo edition
at http://www.biblememory2000.com.

Also, check out PC Memlok at http://www.memlok.com. It ties pictures to the
verses to make it easier to memorize the verse (mnemonics).

It also helps to have an accountability partner when you memorize scripture (or
when you go to exercise or lose weight for that matter). Just when your feeling
like you don't want to do it, there is another person encouraging you to go the
distance. Check out the Three Thirty Club at http://threethirtyclub.com. The
founder, Rev. Kephart, is a big proponent of having an accountability partner.
He has onlined a specific plan of verses to memorize. These verses make up a
foundation of scripture where you can share your faith readily with others.

I think reading the verse aloud works better because then your eyes, ears, and
mouth, and mind all have to work on it. If you are just listening to your own
voice, your eyes and mouth miss out. I once heard that if all four of those
things work on something, you will probably know it.

Bless you for memorizing!

I've been through the peg memory deal. Might work ok for a test tomorrow
afternoon but for scripture, Rote memory works best for me. I just read the
verse aloud until I can say it without halt, help, or hesitation. I can do a
verse in about 3 minutes now, though it took a little longer at first. I do all
the verses one at a time, then go back for seconds, then thirds, and by that
time I am ready to start stringing them together.

From: James Kephart

Dear Elizabeth Friend

You have a lot of pressure and not much time, but you can still do your
memorization. With your worries and pressure, I would suggest you go to
http:wwwthreethirtyclub.com and print the meditation about worry and anxiety.
(It is the 11th Mediatation) Keep it on your person if you can. Wake up and
memorize one verse so you can say it perfectly. This might take 10 minutes the
first time, but after a while, 3 min will be enough. Try to say that verse a
lot during the day, and plan on repeating it at sleep time. The next day, do the
second verse. The next day the third etc. In two weeks you will have said all
the verses. Then go back and repeat. You will be surprized how fast you
re-learn them the second time around. Do not try to link the verses until you
have learned them individually about 3 or 4 times. This is where most people
get discouraged. Memory is like a car on a dirt road. You drive over the same
thing enough and soon you have a trail that is easy to follow. But don't get
discouraged. If you do the one verse at a time you won't get discouraged.
Also, if you go to sleep with scripture on your mind, God can start to work on
you right away. If you go to sleep with the worries of the day on you, it will
take awhile before God
can start dealing with you. Norman Vincent Peale, famed preacher, taught
this.

Blessings!

James L. Kephart

Hello Liz!

How well I can relate! I also was a homeschooling mother.

Perhaps you could insist on a quiet time at a certain time of day. The younger
child are sure to need a rest or nap time. The older children could quietly
read or rest or join you in your memorization venture. It is always difficult
to start a new routine, and I'm sure the children will complain about resting,
but you will probably find that it will be beneficial to everyone in the long
run.

God Bless!
Linda

Subject: When do I go on to memorizing the next verse?
From: Brian Janko

My question is, when memorizing a long section or chapter, "how do you know when
to go on to the next verse?"

I understand that we should memorize one verse at a time without stringing them
together. And that we should start off by reading the first verse five times
aloud, and then try it from memory. If we make a mistake, then we need to read
it five times aloud AGAIN.... and we keep doing that (reading it aloud 5x) until
we can say it from memory without "help, halt, or hesitation."

Here's what I find happening: I read the verse 5x, then I try it by memory. I
stumble. So I read the verse aloud 5 times again. Now, I try it again by
memory and get it perfect. However, RIGHT AFTER that perfect rendering by
memory I try it a second time and stumble. Sometimes I stumble a little and can
say it again perfectly on the next try.... other times I stumble to the point
where I start to doubt the details (is there an "a" or a "the" missing? and
things like that).

After the "reading aloud" part, and given that I can SOMETIMES say it from
memory withouth "halt, help, or hesitation" -- at what point can I feel that I
have memorized it sufficiently to go onto the next verse? Only when there is
NEVER halt, help, or hesitation? Or just if I get it by memory right THE FIRST
TIME? Or just as long as I can AT SOME POINT say it without halt, help, or
hesitation?

When do I go on to memorizing the next verse?

Thanks,
Brian Janko

I just want to thank everyone for their suggestions. I have memorized all
of Psalm one and can say it with confidence. Doing it with my girls was a
great idea, because I have someone to look while I'm reciting and they can
tell me if I make a mistake. There is one thing I'm wondering about, as
you memorize more and more verses, do you remember where each one is? I do know
quite a few verses, but I have no idea where they are in the Bible. I'm hoping
that I'll eventually be able to answer the question that is so often asked,
"where is that in the Bible?" without having to search concordances all the
time.

Subject: Homeschooling & memorization
From: James Kephart

Last night I taught 8 senior adults in exactly 15 minutes to say word perfect,
the first three verses of our 15th meditation on prayer
http://www.threethirtyclub.com. We did this simply by reading aloud each
verse 5 times, then I let them say it when ready. A couple had problems but all
had repeated each verse perfectly without halt, help, or hesitation in that 15
minutes. I went on to the 4th verse and it took them 8 minutes on that one.
Their brain "muscles" were a little tired and the last verse took much longer
than the other three. Makes me think it is sort of like working a body muscle.
(I work out a lot) You can do so many curls, for instance easy, then it becomes
work. I suggest with children that 15 minutes at a session is plenty. You can
go back 3 or 4 hours later for another 15 minutes, but watch that their brain
doesn't get too tired at one setting. You can easily tell. If you have a coach,
or if you coach someone, like your children, you can tell when their brain
becomes a little overworked. That is a good time to change studies and let them
work a different part of their brain.

Blessings!

Hello Linda.

Thank you so much for the suggestions. I never thought to include my children
in my memorization endeavors. I think that just might be the answer, and it
would certainly benefit them as well. It might even help me to be more
diligent. I'll let you know how it works out.
Thanks again, and Lord bless! A sister in Christ, Liz

From: Rev Donald McCorkindale

Greetings!

Long Sections or single verses?

My experience has been that if you don't worry too much about being word perfect
but strive for "meaning perfect" - the words in fact follow very accurately. I
have studied memory technique and would conclude that rather than focusing on a
verse we should look to the big picture. I have the 1700 words or so of the
"Sermon on the Mount" Matthew 5,6,& 7 committed to memory - but I couldn't tell
you what Matthew 6: 7 is for example! Rather than going over individual verses
I have gone over the whole text - listening to it on tape, while driving -
running over it in my mind, reading it and so on. Many links - some natural and
some very artificial glue the sections together. Acrostics and associations
keep the flow - Murder, Adultery Divorce - the word MAD keeps these sections in
the right order! The same patterns are found in the section on religious duties,
prayer and fasting - some of that is lost when focussing on one verse.

The technique of Mindmapping I find invaluable in Christian Ministry in so many
ways - again this keeps the big picture before us. www.mind-map.com has some
info.

I have a concern that sometimes in the desire to "know the scriptures" we omit
to "understand the scriptures". I find - go for understanding first
-
and the words follow. On a number of occasions I have "preached the sermon on
the mount", without notes and to much effect - and transforming influence in
others.

I invite you to rise to the challenge - read the sermon on the mount in modern
translation, record yourself reading it, listen to it or read it through just
once a day for a fortnight. Don't try to memorize it or worry about precise
words, and you will find its meaning is absorbed into heart, mind and life.

with all good wishes and every blessing...

From: James Kephart

Dear Brian Janko,

Once you have said the verse correcty one time, do not go back to it until you
have gone through all the verses you intend to memorize at least once. Do not
start stringing them together until they flow off your tongue easily one at a
time. They get easier the second, third, fourth times around. I generally have
to do them one at a time about 5 times before I am ready to string them
together. I was once told that memorizing is like making a dirt road across the
plains. If you drive over it four or five times it becomes a road. The first
time over, you just knock the weeds down, but with each review it becomes
clearer. If possible get a coach to help you. It doesn't have to be a fellow
memorizer. A lady I know gets her daughter who doesn't even go to church to
coach her. It gives them a time of fellowship and hopefully the great power of
God's Word will do a good work in the daughter.

Blessings!

Dear Elizabeth,

I would say forget about memorizing the book, chapter and verse references. You
will remember generally if someone asks. It is the WORD that is inspired, not
the books and verses. They were added later to help scholars. The Hebrew that
Jesus read, and the Greek that Paul read had no punctuation, much less
references. Many old timers insist on book and chapter and verse. That is
probably why so many people hate memorizing.

To Elizabeth and Linda,
You can include your children in your memory work by asking them to "coach" you.
Make a goal of saying your memory work, say in about a month before the family
or someone and ask your child to coach you to do that. Coaching is easy. You
can learn all about it at http://www.threethirtyclub.com. They will feel good
about helping Mom with her memory work, and might get the idea to do some memory
 work themselves.

Subject: Re: When do I go on to memorizing the next verse?
From: Mark Connor

Hi Brian,

I havn't posted to this group in a very long time, but
I know of a good way that may help.

(note: the key part of this is later down...)

What I do is figure out how many verses I want to
memorize today, lets say 10 verses. So I read through
those 10 verses a couple times to find out what they
are saying, and to see if there is going to be a
really difficult or easy verse in there.

I memorize the first verse, to where I can say it
without messing up. That is when I move on to the
next verse. I get it perfect, then say the two verses
together. If I mess up, or can't think of a word, I
read through them until I can now say both verses
together without looking. Then I go on to the 3rd
verse, and so on. Until I have all 10 verses
"memorized". Then I try to say all 10 of them
perfectly, and if I can't think of a word, I read
through them again, until I can say all 10 of them
perfect.

The thing I found though, is that I still don't have
it memorized! (even though I can say it perfectly). I
found that the way to get it totally memorized is to
quote as much as you want that day, but when tomorrow
comes, try to say all 10 verses without looking at
all! If you can do that, then you have it memorized.
To retain it you only have to review it every couple
of days.

If you can't say it without looking, then read through
it and get it to the point to where you can say it
without looking. (again)

Wait till the next day and try to say it without
looking again. Keep doing that until you can really
say it without looking at the scripture.

I found that is a really good way to get something
memorized, and to keep from getting discouraged by
difficult verses.

Hope that helps!
Mark

I went to the mindmapping site; it looks very interesting. However, could you
give me an example of you would mindmap, say the Sermon on the mount; or maybe
something smaller like Psalm 1 or 23 for memorizing. I am afraid I am a little
dense in understanding it completely when it comes to memorizing scripture.
Thanks for your help

Subject: Another memorization tip
From: Christman, Robert

I've been watching this group and I appreciate all your encouragement. Like most
of you, I see the value of memorizing scripture, don't do it enough, and have
trouble with long-term recall. I offer the following suggestions that have been
helpful to me.

(1) Like many have suggested, I print each verse out on a card that I can carry
with me and review whenever possible. I use a 2-3/4 by 1-3/4 inch card. For
starters, I used cards of that size from some navigator materials. That size is
a little more convenient than business-card size, and a stack of them fits into
a business-card sized pouch that I keep with me.

(2) I try to always have one verse that I am working on, so I can always have a
goal. Sometimes I get away from daily memory work, but having that verse in
front of me reminds me to get back into it. I keep this new verse in the front
of my daily pack.

(3) I also prepare a card as soon as I find a verse that I want to learn, so I
always have a backlog of available verses.

(4) On the front of the card, I include the reference, topic, text of the verse,
and which version of the Bible it's from. I started memorizing using the KJV,
and I want to keep those verses, but I now mostly use the NIV for reading and
new memorizing.

(5) This next one is my key point/idea/suggestion -

On the back of the card I also print the reference, topic, and which version of
the Bible it's from, but instead of the text of the verse, I print the first
letter of each word. I include punctuation and capitalization of the letters.
I find this helpful during review. Only having the letters forces me to think
and remember the words, allows me to check myself as I go, and I can always flip
it over to double-check myself or fill in where I forget a word or phrase. When
I am just reading a verse over and over, I sometimes feel that I am not forced
to really think about it, but the letters-only approach seems more productive to
me. It amazes me how I can identify the letters and recall the verse, even
without a reference. Try it - does "BGcHltu,it,wwwys,Cdfu" make sense to you?
Try reading the letters out loud to yourself, pause at the commas, and use the
hint that G,J,C,L,or H, when capitalized, probably refer to a name or title of
God.

The same trick of letters-only works for memorizing an entire passage, it just
takes a bigger piece of paper.

(6) After I memorize a new verse, using many of your previous suggestions of
repeating it to myself, doing a phrase at a time, learning the meaning of the
verse, and applying it to my life, I turn it over in my daily pack and from then
on, I try to recall it using just the letters. I review the verses in my daily
pack until I am sure that I know them perfectly.

(7) After I "know" a verse, it still needs review, probably forever. I have
three separate stacks of verses - ones that I know well and review only seldom,
ones I know pretty well and review occasionally, and new ones that know (sort
of) which I review frequently. The goal is to move the card from one stack to
another -

A - The verses I want to memorize - to:
B - The one verse I am working on now - to:
C - The verses I memorized recently but need to review daily - to: D - The
verses I have memorized and review once every week or two - to: E - The verses I
know and review once every month or two - to: F - The verses I really know and
review only seldom.

(8) For verses where I cannot keep the reference straight, I sometimes consider
the first 1, 2, or 3 words as part of the reference. So for example, I might
write the verse

"Rom 5:8ButGod --- cHltu,it,wwwys,Cdfu."

(9) I admit it, I'm a computer junky. I use Microsoft Word to create a table
and copy verses from my On-line Bible http://www.onlinebible.net/index.html to
the table cells, and then I enter the letters-only portion onto the
corresponding table cell on the second (flip side) page, and print them out. I
also used the On-line Bible verse-list feature to extract a bunch of verses and
print them on some pages that I carry in my day planner. I can fit about 15-20
verses on a 5.5" x 8.5" page, so I can carry 200-400 verses (full text) in my
planner.

(10) I also (I said I was a computer junky) have a Word macro that cycles
through my list of "known" verses and print the letters-only and References for
about 6 verses onto each day's planner page for review during otherwise wasted
moments - like while on telephone hold. This macro also prints events,
anniversaries, daily and monthly reminders, etc. on the appropriate page, so I
have a very customized planner. I may not do everything on my to-do list, but
it's a great to-do list.

(11) I have also recorded the verses on a cassette and micro-cassette, and
sometimes play them in the car or when going to sleep. I recorded them with the
reference, then a pause the length of time it takes me to say the reference and
first phrase, then I record the first phrase, then a pause for the second
phrase, then the second phrase, etc. That way listening to them can be an
active experience to check with myself how well I know it, and also be used for
learning.

(12) I record the reference again at the end of the verse. Always when saying
the verse, I say the reference before and after the verse.

Have I been perfect? - of course not!

Is God impressed by us memorizing scripture? - three guesses - He already knows
what's there.

Is it helpful - YES - God's word is powerful, and I want to be able to know,
recall and apply it throughout my life.

I hope these suggestions, especially #5, help in your memorization.

Dear Jean Evans,

I teach a class of seniors to memorize every Wednesday night and have often
heard your plaint of bad memory, but have never seen it to prove true. You may
be the exception, but I doubt it. As Satan told Eve, "You will not die," it may
be that he is the one that lies to seniors about their memory. My seniors are
somewhat amazed to find they can memorize. As you memorize scripture you will
get more confidence and the confidence makes it seem that you become a better
memorizer. I memorize the different meditations at
http://www.threethirtyclub.com. Each meditation has about 15 verses plus the
Lords Prayer. It takes me about three weeks to get one down perfectly, word for
word so I can say it without halt, help, or hesitation. I am a slow learner. My
wife and a friend or two can cut that time in half. You can go to
http://www.threethirtyclub.com/how_to_memorize_a_meditation.htm and get the
instructions. Also, memorizing scripture is much like singing. If you practice
aloud, you will be able to recite it quicker. Some people try to memorize
silently....... Doesn't work.

beyond our memorization time. I'm writing to you because I can't get the

Re: Subscribe biblemem

Hi All!!
It is such a blessing to be able to join a bible memorization group. I have
battled with trying to memorize scripture and I have finally decided that Satan
was not going to win. I have been told by friends in bible study that when one
tries to memorize the Word, one can come up against obstacles because it is
God's Word. I do believe that, but I have now chosen to not let Satan win!!

Thanks and God Bless!!

Joslyn
