Stephen:

I'll bite! Here are a few memorization techniques I've used with specific
scripture.

Mnemonics: When I memorized I Timothy 2:1 [NKJV] I couldn't get the order of the
list correct until I used the word SPIT to remember Supplications, Prayers,
Intercession and the giving of Thanks.

Body Parts: Not sure if there is a technical word for this, but, I'm now
memorizing Proverbs 6:16-19 "Six things the Lord hates, seven are detestible to
him....." The list seems to flow from head to toe and that is a help in
memorizing the order "Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent
blood, etc."

Hand motions: When I memorized Psalm 131 I used hand motions to say "Lord, my
heart is not haughty [hand over heart], nor are my eyes lofty [hands pointing
to my eyes], neither to I concern myself with great matters [hands point to
forehead], nor things to profound for me [hands pointing upward above my head].

Order of importance: When possible I try to see order in everything. For
example, when I was memorizing Psalm 73: 23-26 I would get the order mixed up in
verse 26 about "My flesh and my heart fail". Then I remembered that my flesh
would probably fail before my heart and that reminded me of the order and I
haven't forgotten it since.

Hope these are helpful,
Lorry Schoenly

3 x 5 index cards with pictures are very helpful. When teaching a class of 9 -
11 year old girls, one of the assignments was to memorize 1 Cor. 13. To start
the memorization process, I took old catalogs and a stack of index cards to
class. We read through the chapter together, then I put the girls to work
finding appropriate pictures to cut out and glue on the cards. We used those
cards in class every week to aid in memorization. I also lined the cards up on
a sheet of paper and made copies for each girl so they could cut them out to use
at home. We were very successful. One of my students had learning
difficulties, but after much practice and encouragement, even she was able to
recite the whole chapter in front of the church congregation. What a great
feeling of accomplishment for all of us!

Hi, My name is Tom Davis, and I am looking forward to communicating with list
members interested in memorizing GOD's Word. I have just started using a small
digital recorder to record passages that I want to memorize. I use headphones
and program the recorder to continually replay the passage. Has anyone else
tried this method? Any ideas to help me memorize this way? Anyone have a list of
passages that they have memorized, or would like to memorize? Today I am working
on Isaiah 53:3-6 Thanks for your help Tom Davis

Hey Tom,
I have digital recorder and have been blessed by this method. You can play it
back in the morning when you are getting ready. It also helps if a spouse or
friend records the passage for you into the box. Hearing an additional voice on
the same passage has benefitted me. With my recorder, I can upload the
recordings to my pc at work and play it (quietly) when I am working. Thanks, Ron
Uebel

From: Terry Vogelaar

Hello,

Because I am new to this list I will introduce myself. I am Terry Vogelaar from
the Netherlands. In 1988 I became a reborn Christian and soon after my
conversion I was convinced about the importance of bible knowledge. But only
since the beginning of this year I started to think seriously about memorising
the scripture.

The books of Tony Buzan helped me to think about a concrete way to start using
my memory efficiently. Many other writers suggested to use yoga and other
dubious techniques to 'improve myself', but the books of Tony Buzan were much
more 'down to earth'. He explains how combining creativity with knowledge can
help in memory training. Being a graphic designer, I am constantly occupied with
the visualisation of raw data, so that shouldn't be too hard for me.

My main goal in memorising the scripture is to be able to know what God tries to
say to me. Not just by knowing John 3:16 and some other popular verses by heart.
It is important to see more than just a few tiles of the mosaic. I want to see
the whole picture. I want to let my thoughts be shaped by God.

In Him,
Terry Vogelaar

Subject: Dear fellow members:
From: Richard J. Knox, Sr.

I was excited to find a User Group specifically directed towards those
interested in memorizing Bible verses. I think S. Simpson has done a fine job to
sponsor this forum. I am a newbie to user groups in general, so please be
patient with me. I feel the value of memorizing scriptures cannot just be
measured by quantity but by the power, strength and anointing of God that comes
upon you when you recite these scriptures in the face of the enemy of our souls.

My name is Richard Knox, Sr. I am an elder at a local church here in Honolulu,
Hawaii. I am also a retired nuclear scientist who has programmed software
products since 1965 and, with the help of the Lord, has authored several CAD and
engineering programs over the years. For many years, I have fully realized the
value of memorizing God's word, especially from the KJV Bible. In fact, I wrote
a program to help with scripture memorization entitled, Biblemem, in March of
2000 but after a month of development, I put it in archival storage. I became
convinced, at that time, that I would not participate in commercializing God's
word. Much later, I saw the folly of that conviction realizing that people are
reluctant to acquire things which have no perceived value. So I resumed work on
the project in June of this year, completed it, and posted the program on our
web site just two weeks ago.

The quality of a product on the Internet only matters if people can locate you.
(How well I know that!) So I am presently registering this product with various
search engines, etc. I respect that there are a number of good Bible Memory
programs out there. I invite all to take a look at our FREE demo downloadable
from our web site at:

http://www.galaxymall.com/christian/spiritofdiscovery

The 11.5 Meg downloadable file is a self-extracting executable that opens up to
2 options:

1. Run the Program or
2. Run the Tutorial/Demo

Skip the registration option (for now) and "run" the Tutorial/Demo!. It is
completely hands-free, runs for 15 minutes and tours you through the entire
program. It will give you the "look and feel" of the program. Then, when you're
ready to register, since you already have the downloaded file, just visit our
site. The cost of the download with registration is $19.95; or it can be
priority-mail shipped on CD for $29.95. Upon authorization of your Visa, Master,
or American Express, your registration code will be immediately emailed to you
for full program operation.

My objective is to reach as many interested Christians as possible via the
Internet who want to have fun memorizing scriptures. If you have any
recommendations, suggestions, etc., I would love to hear from you. Meanwhile,
back to my marketing efforts. Thank you, God bless you all, and Aloha!

Hello Yom, yes I have used this method. What I do is say it slowly and pause
every five or six words (whatever is rhythemic) so I can repeat it aloud as I
hear it until the passage is finished, and then start over till I've read it on
tape many times & then go on to the next verse. I haven't done much of anything
lately I apparently have been tricked into being too busy! Ok now that I've
caught the thief robbing me of God's time he has to repay seven times!!!!

Well Tom,God bless you in your efforts, in him
