Angela,
I don't pipe up in this mailinglist too often, but if
you're using KJV or NKJV with your children, the Child Evangelism Fellowship
(CEF) produces some excellently done visualized Bible verses, and several
Scripture-songs (mostly KJV.
It has been a while since I've used their stuff, so I
don't know what's more recent. They have excellent flannelboard-illustrated
lessons which I've enjoyed teaching to mixed-age-group kids, mostly in "backyard
Bible Club" type settings. Since the teacher's materials are supplied in the
first-person, I've heard some folks object to saying things that in their
specific cases aren't true. Actually, it had never occurred to me simply to READ
THE LESSON directly out of the book...(DUH!)... but used it only as an
idea-source for what I was actually doing.
There's another organization, Children's Ministries International, which I
watched the initial formation of, but have lost track of in recent years. Their
first founders (now all retired) had a real talent for training children's
workers to develop THEIR OWN teaching materials. I went through one of their
early
(80s) seminars, and really enjoyed it, even though I'm
still "crafts-impaired". 8-)
This ministry has one of the highest "ROI"s of
anything in this universe.

One way to help yourself remember the book reference is to repeat it before and
after the verse when you quote the verse. It helps some. another way to remember
it is to read the whole chapter or sometimes book before working on learning it
every time you work. another -and in my opinion the best - is to find a way to
apply ite virese to your life (or the package as the case may
be) because what affects our life we tend to remember.. Another for just verses
is to make a song out of the verse with the reference repeated again and again
in the song.. This works very well for me. it might be more difficult for long
passages. Signs or plaques help. Flashcards. Anything that helps you see the
verse and of course recordings to help you memorize it with the Reference in
larger, bolder maybe colored type. If you learn by doing (I
do) then it helps to type or wirite it over and over. Hope this helps.

Yes . I know those problems. I have diabetes and it affects my memory badly. I
did do a lot of memorizing when I was enrolled in bible Memory Association (I
don't know whether it still exitts. they had books of scripture memory plans for
ages from 5 and up. One of the things I had the most trouble with was the
addresses (where the verses lived in the living Word). the way they had us
memorize was to repeat the address both at the beginning of the verse and at the
end. They also had us read the whole chapter instead of just reading and
memorizing the verse. That way we would understand more of what we read. I also
would sing the verses as a song and that helped me a gread dela. I soon began
making up songs with the words fo the verses in them, but there sere usually
more words as well. I don't know whether you would want to do this or not or
whether it would help. Another thing I would do is type them again and again or
write them again and again. I learn best by doing. Do you know how you learn
best? If you learn best by hearing it would help to make a tape of the verses
you want to learn or record them on your coimputer and play the verses over and
over (loop them). Listen often and you will learn much as you learn the words of
a song by eharing it over and over. If you learn best by seeing put the verse up
everywhere in your house. You will learn it. The thing that helps me best I
think is simply applying the verse in some way to my life. I would like to
request that you pray for me and my family. We have soem really difficult health
problems and divorce/ custody problems. Especially pray for my daughter, her
children and the custody problems over the children (Satan is trying very hard
to get those children and I suspect drugs and sexual abuse are both being used
-especially with the girl). I can't prove anything, though and they are using
our health which is easy enough to prove. The reason I suspect sexual abuse is
something my grand daughter worte which I read but cannot take to court. It
would alienate her entirely. It sounds like you are giving the kids a good
foundation for the Christian lfe in spite of your memory problems and I believe
that foundation will make for a atrong house flr those kids. Have you got the
words to the hymn How Firm a Foudation? That is a wonderful hymn. If you don't
know it, I believe the words and music are available for free form hymsite.com
and I think it applies to everything I am going through and it helps me to sing
it to myself. God bless you. Keep up the good work with those children. Marie

Dino,
I am also not an expert in this, but might have some suggestions that can help.
These are my personal ideas, so you'll probably also want to look at what others
are doing that helps them. After reading articles about how memory works, and
looking at others' suggestions, I've come up with my own system for memorizing
scripture, and am calling it EZ-Memory-Verse. It can be used manually (with
index card flashcards, paper, etc) or with your favorite computerized review
system (SuperMemo, etc). There are lots of ideas about the best way to memorize
scripture, and the EZ-Memory-Verse is is a compilation of the best of them in my
opinion.
If one can define what's most important to a memory verse system, then you can
evaluate various system according to that metric of acceptability. I think the
two most important items in a memory verse system are:
1) Individual item elements that you memorize.
2) A good review schedule.
The EZ-Memory-Verse system is a system for #1, as it stresses What to memorize,
namely: **In the following sentences, "VERSE" should actually be interpreted as
a list of verses appearing together in a short paragraph. As every VERSE has
multiple important elements, you should quiz yourself independently on each of
them.
a) The VERSE Reference should trigger the Start Of The VERSE in your head.
b) The Start Of The VERSE should trigger the VERSE Reference in your head.
c) The Start Of The VERSE should trigger a Note/Topic in your head.
d) The Reference + Start Of The VERSE should trigger the 2nd Part of the VERSE
in your head.
e) If the VERSE still has parts, then the 2nd Part of the VERSE should trigger
the 3rd Part of the VERSE in your head, and so-on, until you've quizzed yourself
on all the part of the VERSE.
You can read more about my system by downloading it at
http://ire.org/~ted/ez-memory-verse.zip
See ch1.doc in the Psalms and John folders to see the types of flashcards to
create.
The most critical/difficult part of memorizing verses is the first part, which
is what items a, b, and c concentrate on. Knowing the verse references will
help you easily remember verses when you later are given just the reference, and
associating a note/topic with the VERSE will help you remember the verse when
hearing the note/topic later. The Navigators memory system also stresses verse
references and a note/topic. Actually, to remember all the verses associated
with a topic as effectively as possible, you need to make a special effort to
learn that... ie, the EZ-Memory-Verse system will help you to remember "Trinity"
when you hear any VERSE reference associated with "Trinity". However, it won't
help you to perfectly recall all of them at once; for that, you should also
study a complete list of verses that deal with the Trinity. This is how Jack
Van Impe studies.
Another key component of the system is "chaining", as one VERSE section will jog
your memory for the next section. The language of the New Testament lends
itself to chaining more than the Old Testament. You'll see how effective
chaining is when you try it.
The next most important part to a memory verse system is review. Any
computerized review system will be have some advantages over plain old
index/flashcards. My favorite is SuperMemo, but others are available and have
been mentioned on this list.
I hope this helps you some.
In Christ,
Ted

I've been using the free SuperMemo 6.7 for DOS on my DOS HP200LX PDA so I can
take it anywhere I like, but I also purchased the commercial SuperMemo 2000.
SuperMemo versions are also available for the Palm Pilot and Pocket PC.
6.7 for DOS doesn't support multimedia, but works great for
memorizing scripture, studying Spanish, etc... SuperMemo 7.0 for
Windows is also free, and has some multimedia support. A version comparison
chart is here: http://www.supermemo.com/english/which.htm
You can download both SuperMemo 6.7 and 7.0 here:

Subject: memorize using as many senses as possible
From:
re: Bethmonpeoplepc.com's great idea to put verses to music for memorization.
Experts say that the more senses you use while learning something the more
ingrained it becomes in memory.
How about using the verse numbers like hopscotch? and reciting verses to
progress on the "gameboard" this could be done with flash cards on the
ground or taped to various set locations in a house.. that way each verse
would be asociated more firmly with the verse number. just an idea. let
me know if it is useful at all.
