Robyn, it is exciting to hear that you are getting motivated to memorize
scripture. Your note spurred a thought that I had shared with the group
earlier and that I think is VERY important today.

So often in the Christian sectors we relate to "doing activities." These
activities can be Church, Bible study, Scripture memory, or whatever. It is
paramount that Christians remember that the Christian Life is to be a
relationship with Jesus Christ, God of the universe. I often find myself
getting into the "habit" of a morning quiet time and reading, writing a
note, praying and then taking off to go to the office. The problem with this
is that sometimes I leave Jesus out of it. When I leave out Jesus, quiet
time becomes another activity not unlike remembering to feed the cat. The
same principle holds with Scripture memory. We need to be sure that this is
an activity that we do WITH Jesus that contributes to our relationship with
Him. I encourage you, Robyn, to spend time in the Gospels (John in
particular) getting to know Jesus, the man. Then pick verses that help you
relate to Him and build that relationship with Him. You may find that
memorizing verses that help you get to know Jesus will also motivate you to
read the Bible more to know Jesus even better.

If anyone in this group has some tips that help make Scripture mem. more
relationally focused, I would be very interested in hearing. Often I review
verses by "talking them over" with Jesus. This way there is 2-way
discussion -- Jesus to me through the verses and me to Jesus in prayer. It's
a lot of fun.

shocked the first time that happened!! It was great! It was a real help
coming across the Scripture Memorization Page - it really challanged me
to put some time and effort into it, and made me think about why I was
doing it.

Hi. I have been reading stuff on the net today about Scripture memorisation,
especially Stephen's pages.

I am grateful that I was brought up in a Christian home, and that the
Baptist church I grew up in emphasised Scripture memorisation.

My name is David McKay, I'm 46 years of age and I will have been married to
Joan for 25 years on 24th November. We have 4 children, but so far only one
is following Christ. That is Cathy. She is 20 and is going to be married to
a wonderful Christian bloke called Philip on 16th January.

Most of my Scripture memory is KJV, because that is the version used in my
church back in the 50s and 60s [told you I was old!] I liked one person's
advice that I read today: learn passages, not just isolated verses.  We were
taught Psalm 1 and Psalm 23 and I am so glad I have them in my memory. Most
of the rest is a bit of John 1 and a bit of Genesis 1, etc, etc.

I am a high school music teacher, and I run Inter School Christian
Fellowship at our school. Last year the students learnt some verses about
the importance of God's Word: Isaiah 40:8; Psa 119:105 and Jesus' own words
Mark 13:31. I would have liked to do more, but it is slow going at the
moment.

This is a great reason for an email list.

It's awesome to see the power of God moving when HIS WORD
becomes alive and takes root in each one of us.

I was given a unique method of memorizing scripture a few
years ago walking through the cow pastures to and from my
job at the time. It's truly beautiful how GOD works in us
to accomplish his ultimate work.

I have a collection of hundreds of bible verses, I've put
to music.  Some will be familiar to you, while others are
completely new.   I was given one in church this morning,
to the tune of "O Come All Ye Faithful."

If you're interested in memorizing scripture along with a
musical tune, begin matchin words to simple tunes and you
will find yourself being thrilled to having the WORD with
you at any given moment.   I also have a daily "S.S.A.D."
List for just this purpose.

WHATEVER method you use or eventually adapt to using, dig
into the WORD and equip yourself for battle, AMEN!

My wife has also found putting verses to music very effective!

I have used another plan that has been effective in helping me learn
hundreds of verses well. It is on my web page - and I'm glad to e-mail it
to anyone who might want it also.

I've only just got your email but I've found in the last day or two that
what you said has been very relevent. Well, I think it's the same kind
of thing. I've got this idea that if only I do enough (of whatever it is
I'm doing - reading the Bible, praying for my family, writing, learning
Bible verses etc) or organise myself enough everything will happen
properly - and that the only reason things don't work out is because I
don't do enough work. As I said, it's only in the last day or two that
I've realised how wrong that is. As much as I would love to be able to
help my hugely stuffed-up family by myself I can't do it; that and
everything else I want to be able to do has to come from God, I need to
remember that without him I can do nothing. I can NEVER work hard
enough, to become perfect. I'm not sure if this is totally related to
your point, though I think it is because I get caught in the trap of
thinking "I have to spend an hour each morning with God, praying" and if
I don't I feel guilty and all that. But even when I am spending that
time with God I tend to focus more on if I'm doing the right thing
rather than on God and Jesus and getting to know Them better. Does that

For those of you who have asked, here is the program I have developed and
used to learn hundreds of verses well. Let me know if you need any more
explanation at any time, and I'll be glad to keep in contact to give you
encouragement and accountability to help you stick at it if you desire. It
has done incredible things for me in life and ministry.

A  SCRIPTURE  MEMORIZATION  PROGRAM  DESIGNED FOR  YOU !

1.   Decide that systematic Scripture memorization and review is important
enough to spend some time on regularly.  (It certainly is!  See Col. 3:16;
Deut. 11:18; Josh. 1:8; Ps. 119:11; II Pet. 3:18; Ps. 119:93.)
2.   Pray for God’s help in disciplining yourself to take the necessary
time, and to keep at it regularly.
3.   Obtain 3 x 5 ruled index cards to put verses on.  Keep a supply of
cards on hand.
4.   Write (or type) verses you wish to memorize on your cards - the verse
on the ruled side, and the reference in the middle of the blank side.
Start with some key verses that you know of, or get advice from your pastor
or a friend on a number of verses to start on.
5.   Keep a list (perhaps in your Bible) of verses you read or hear which
you would like to memorize.  Write these verses on cards whenever you have
time. (Always have some good verses written out on cards ready to be
memorized.)
6.   Begin taking a few minutes daily to work on memorizing Scripture
verses.  Start with five or six verses.  You do NOT need to learn the
verses immediately.  Just spend some time going over them each day.
7.   Mark a blank card “Daily Review” as a cover card for the stack of
cards you are beginning to memorize.  (Use a rubber band to keep the stack
together.)  Remember, you must review these DAILY, if only to read over
each one carefully.  Some days you may be able to spend more time on them,
but don’t miss a day of spending at least a few minutes on them.  You will
find them getting more and more familiar until you have some memorized
after two or three weeks!
8.   Determine a schedule for adding new verses to your Daily Review to be
learned.  You may want to add one every third day for a while, or once a
week.  Just make sure it is regular!  (You may add more often at first,
then later change your schedule to add less often as you accumulate more
verses and need a little more time for reviewing them.)  Write the date you
start to review each verse in the upper right hand corner of the side of
the card with the reference on for that verse.
9.   Mark another blank card “Weekly Review.”  As soon as you have any
verse in your Daily Review stack learned well (so that you can quote it and
the reference several days in a row without looking , transfer that card to
this new stack.  Review the cards in this stack just once a week.  Write
the date each time you review these on the Weekly Review cover card, so you
don’t forget when it’s time to review them again.
10.   Mark another blank card “Monthly Review.”  When you have reviewed
verses in your Weekly Review stack once a week for a couple months or so,
you will find that you can recall some of them very well each time you
review, so you can now transfer those into this new stack to be reviewed
just once a month.  Again, write the date on the cover card when you go
over these, so you can see when it will be time to review them again.
11.   As you move more verses from Daily Review to Weekly Review, you may
want to eventually divide your Weekly Review stack into smaller stacks for
several different days of the week, so you won’t have to spend so much time
on any one day reviewing those weekly review verses.  Likewise, later on
you will want to divide Monthly Review verses into several smaller stacks
and review on different days of the month.  (Eventually, you can have a
Weekly Review stack for each day of the week, and a Monthly Review stack
for each day of the month.  At that point, you will each day be reviewing
your Daily Review verses, some Weekly Review verses, and some Monthly
Review verses.  However, it still will not take you a lot of time, because
you will know your Monthly and Weekly Review verses well, and you will
still just be going over your Daily Review verses for a few minutes, not
taking time to try to memorize any verses in just a day or two.)
12.   You will probably want to alternate reviewing the verse and the
reference every other time.  As you review each stack, after you turn over
each card to check whether you said the words or the reference correctly,
leave the card turned over so you will be reviewing the opposite side the
next time.
13.   Quote the verses you have learned, or are learning, to others
whenever you have the opportunity.
14.   Never quit reviewing the verses you have learned until you meet the
Lord in the air and He gives you permission to stop.
15.   Encourage and help someone else (many others, if possible) to get
started in this program also.  It will make it so much easier for you to
keep at it if you always have some friend doing it as well, and you pray
for, encourage, and check up on each other.

THIS WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE!  YOUR LABOR WILL NOT BE IN VAIN!!  START NOW!

Well said, Peggy.  Our LOVE for God, for His Son Jesus Christ, should be
our primary motivation.

In fact, I find it interesting that often in Scripture we find "reminders"
that faith without worship is dead...  For example, James 2:17 states that
faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.  Faith and
actions working TOGETHER.  Again in James 2:26: "As the body without the
spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead."

I pray daily that He will grant me a wise and GENEROUS spirit, one that is
motivated by LOVE for Him...

is nothing we can do to make him love us more or less.

To me, this memorizing scripture has to do with a love relationship with
Jesus.  His Word is precious to me because he himself is precious to me.  It
is one way he communicates with me.

Context is important, don't you reckon?

My first passage was 2 John [suggested on a web site somewhere ....] I have
always overlooked 2 and 3 John, and concentrated on 1 John. It is a lovely
little epistle. It has been a great blessing to learn it.

What if something happened to all the written scriptures we have?

Then we would need all this Bible we store in our heads and hearts.

Many people only had what they heard and remembered and did not
have written scripture.  It could happen again.

One thing I do in reviewing individual verses, if case it would be of any
help to any of you: I have a stack of verses on 3x5 cards for each day of
the month that I review each evening. These are verses I learned years ago
and have continued to review periodically. There are approximately 20 in
each stack, bound with a rubber band. On the card on the top of each stack,
I have the date of the month for that stack. Each evening when I review
them, I then write that date on the card (small printing). If I miss a day
or two, I write the date I make them up on the card.

I like to see how many months in a row I can be faithful in reviewing each
stack of cards. This just gives me a little extra motivation not to miss
just because I'm "too tired" or something. Actually, it only takes a few
minutes to review these since I know them well, but this is needed to
really keep them "sharp" in my mind.

Sometimes we read this passage, "Keep my commandments and I will love
you/love
you more"  But I think instead, it is saying, "If you love me, you will keep
my commandments; it will be a natural result of your love."  Of course
taking
the whole context of scripture, we understand that only living in him,
through
the power of the Holy Spirit, are we able at all to keep his commandments.

And don't forget why we love him at all..."because he first loved us(!)"

I was just thinking that when his truth sets us free, not only at the point
of
salvation, but daily as we walk in him, his word becomes to us a love song
to
savor; it becomes less of a chore or a burden to discipline ourselves to
read
or memorize.  It becomes the bread that satisfies our deepest hunger,
because
in the word we find the Word.

Discipline is still there, but it becomes less of a legal thing and more of
a
love thing.  And there is such freedom as we walk in his love, knowing that
even if we have missed several days, we can start where we left off without
feeling condemnation.  He still loves us!

I have taught John 14 through 17 to my children and memorized them myself as
well. Excellent passage to memorize. It begs the question: how many of you
can
recite the 10 commandments in order? We made that a family project as well-
not just the abbreviated commandments but all the verses that go along with
them. You can trace most bad behavior to a violation of one of those
commandments.

But back to the issue. It is absolutely true that we cannot do anything to
make God love us more. But it is possible to be "well pleasing" to God.
Also,
as this John passage illustrates, we can demonstrate our love for Him by our
obedience to His word.

Psalm 119:11 provides a short and crystal clear answer to the question: "Why
memorize scripture?"  -- "Thy word have I have hid in my heart that I might
not
sin against thee."  I have been saved since 1976 and regret terribly that I
have neglected "hiding the word in my heart" until the recent discovery of
this
discussion group.  The group has given me tools to go deeper into the Word.
While memorizing scripture won't make Him love us any more, it will help us
to
love Him more.  We are JUSTIFIED when we are saved but the process of being
SANCTIFIED is an ongoing one which can only be enhanced by being close to
scripture and -- more importantly -- close to the author.  As in all things,
and especially in matters of the Spirit, we need to keep things in balance.
Memorizing scripture is only one tool for those who would be witnesses for
Christ, but a very important one..

David, that's great that you're doing that! I've heard before that
sometimes those who have meant much to us years ago are sometimes in
spiritual need, and our appreciation and contact may really help meet that
need!

I'm new on here. How many are on this list approximately? Scripture
memorization has really helped me, and I really want to encourage as many
others as possible to get involved. We also encourage memorization with the
tribal people here where we work in Irian Jaya.
