Subject: BibleMem: Biblememory list conversation starter
From: Bible Memory List
Hello all,
Whenever the biblememory discussion list gets quite for a while I throw in a
comment to see if I can get a conversation going ...
1) There are currently 291 active members of the list. I think that many of
the members of the list have never posted a comment. So if you have been just
listening for some time or have not yet had an opportunity to share your
thoughts then here is a challenge for you: Send us a note and tell us how the
Scripture that you have memorized has helped you out (e.g., in your thought
life, your choices, your behavior, etc.).
2) Many of the members of this list have spent some time developing various
tools to help in the process of memorization. These tools include software,
web sites and other Scripture memory tools and helps. Some are free and some
can be purchased for a small fee. Every once in a while I request everyone to
send in a post with a paragraph or two promoting their offering. So if you
like, tell us about the tools you have available to help us memorize Scripture.
For those of you who are new to the list, here is how it works. As I said,
there are currently 291 active members of the list. If you send a message to
biblememory()memoryverses.org your message will be sent to all the other members
of the list. If you reply to one of these messages then your reply will also be
sent to all the members of the list. In this way we can have a on-going,
slow-moving, wide-area discussion on the topic of anything to do with the topic
of Scripture Memorization.
If you wish to read all the messages which have been previously sent then go to
the following web site: http://www.memoryverses.org/archives.shtml
Thanks,

From: Bible Memory List
Stephen, thanks for running this discussion list and for encouraging us to
respond.
My name is Phil Walker. In response to Stephen's challenge, I would like to
share my theme verse for this year. PSALM 92:2 To proclaim your love in the
morning and your faithfulness at night. It is my goal to begin each morning
focusing on God's love for me and for the world around me, and seek to live my
day resting and banking on that love. Each evening, I want to reflect back and
thank God for his faithfulness to me. Scripture I have memorized help me as I
meditate on both his love and faithfulness.
My website http://www.scripturememorychallenge.org is going strong and I invite
everyone to check it out.
We offer
a) quizzes where you can review and keep sharp on any chapter you have ever
memorized;
b) a quiz results page where you can encourage and be encouraged by others
memorizing the same things you are.
c) a Forum where you can introduce yourself to the world of memorizers,
and/or share Scriptural insights or just enjoy easily communicating with those
who love Scripture Memory in a safe environment.
d) A daily verse by email in the New Testament One Year Challenge. (A key verse
from every chapter of the New Testament.)
e) Special help to everyone memorizing ACTS as a part of Bible Quizzing (as well
as a neat page on our Forum devoted to Bible quizzing.)
f) Our newest thing is to post "GOD has Spoken" verses on college campuses or
other places (high schools, businesses, hospitals, etc)
g) CONGRATULATIONS packets that are sent to anyone who finishes one of our
programs AND can quote all the verses in the program.
Please check us out if you have an interest in Scripture Memory. There is no
charge for anything we do and we never solicit funds.
In Christ, Phil Walker

PS JOHN 15:5-8 is my favorite passage. The outrageous promises in 5 and 7 just
blow me away and daily challenge me to get to know this God. I would love to
hear from anyone who also loves this passage.

I have memorized individual verses and short passages for some time, but only
recently started with longer sections of scripture. I have memorized three of
the Psalms, and will probably finish the book of Titus this week. The way this
has changed my life has been obvious to me. I spend a lot of time on the road
and recite these passages to myself while driving. Also the last thing at night
I recite them before falling asleep (ok. sometimes I don't quite finish before I
am asleep!)
Focusing and meditating on these passages has kept my spirit much less troubled
by fear - and no nightmares at all when I go to sleep musing the Word. These
are two areas I have had trouble with my entire life, so I am delighted to see
how God can use His word to remove the problems from my life.

Subject: BibleMem: Memory of scripture useful in avoiding deception
From: Bible Memory List
Hello Folks,
The scripture I have found very useful to remember in biblical discernment is 2
Timothy 3:16-17.
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine,
for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
(King James Bible)
It is good to remember the sufficiency of scripture in all things, coupled by
the Lord's enabling through the Holy Spirit to do His will.
May God Bless You All ALWAYS,
Kevin.

From: Bible Memory List
God's Word Works.
Bible Memory is a favorite part of mine and my wif's devotional time.
Here is a testimony of how the word of God works.
A while back as were were reading and memorizing, we chose a verse to
internalize for our particular needs. The verse was John 15:7 " If ye abide in
me and my words abide in you ye can ask what ye will and it shall be done unto
you".
That weekend we had a mini-van that we wanted to sell and my wife said to
me, "why don't you put the van out beside the road in front of the house and put
a sign on it"? I hesitated and said that it probably wouldn't sale like that but
she insisted reminding me of the that verse.
Then she said let's pray about it, and I said when we do our devotions
tomorrow we will pray, she said, "let's pray right now".
We did pray, claiming that verse and within two hours another pastor whom I did
not know stopped with his wife. He said to me " we have been looking for a
mini-van just like this one for weeks and have not been able to find one".
He went on to say, " we decided to pray just this morning that God would lead us
to the van we needed and here it is".
Wow!! the word of God when internalized ( memorized and believed ) is
power.
God bless, J. Wayne Veal

tell you that besides being a full time pastor, I also teach memory and

Noel,
I have memorized Revelation...twice. I've maintained it for about 2 years now.
It is the hardest book in the NT to memorize, so you might want to start with a
shorter letter to build up confidence. However, if you feel God calling you to
start with Revelation, don't let my advice dissuade you!
Like I said, Revelation is really tough. However, it has reaped huge benefits
in my life. I am a song-writer, and I've probably gotten at least a half dozen
songs from the book so far.
Have fun!

Cory Grimm

I would highly recommend The Bible Study in Stereo. The website is

importantly, the verses stay with minimal review.

Denna,
Thanks so much for your testimony! I've also been troubled by fear most of my
life, and the Lord has used His memorized word to help me is this area too.. But
what really got my attention was that you'd had trouble with nightmares and
going over your verses last thing at night brought release from these. I have
been plagued with nightmares recently, and had prayed about this on the morning
I read your message. The Lord reminded me that I had stopped going over my
verses and meditating on them as I fell asleep! I used to do this but had
started reading instead. I've also gone over my verses when I have insomnia. I
would say that one of the greatest blessings I have received from memorizing
God's word has been in taking every thought captive to Christ, and I've
recommended it to others who have shared with me that they are struggling in
this area.

For my scrpture memory, I started with the Topical Memory System from Navpress.
Having this and the software with the diffferent tools help me finish the 60

Since, we are sharing tools, - I wanted to give a mention of my web site

I am really interested in starting a Bible Memory Class in my church.
I would like to know of all of the programs, books, booklets, software, etc.
that is available so that I could refer the people to these various means.
Could you help me in this pursuit?
Thanks so much.

Subject: BibleMem: Revelation Revisited
From: Bible Memory List
Rev 1:1 The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants
what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant
John,
Cory,
It's so tough huh. Now you (Cory) went and done it !!! I will have to
invent a way to memorize Revelation. My initial take on this idea is to
build a model starting by designing a plan. We have to know how we are going to
go after and achieve the objective. Having a plan will make it funner and easier
to learn, and eternally worthwhile.
The only way I have had consistent success memorizing scripture for the
long-term was to combine it with drawings, music and making the excersize fun to
do. Rote memory just doesn't do it for me. I hate rote.
And having a good plan will give the project a construct, if you will, a natural
pleasing form with meaning to the person creating the plan, singing the music
and sketching the drawings.
We need to create a mental construct of visual and audio hooks on which to hang
all the information. This is more like arts and crafts. I like arts and crafts.
I used to build models of all kinds of things as a kid, and loved it. At the
outset it will take on the appearance of constructing a building of some kind,
probably a house. Your favorite house, or the one you would really like to live
in will do fine.
We know what we want it to look like after it is built "Revelation". But what
does Revelation look like? And we have no plan for how to get it lodged firmly
into our minds, whatever or however it looks.
In designing the plan think of architecture like building a house and begin
making a sketch. Now you are going to think I am really nuts. We are going to
build a model of Revelation backwards, and the only sensible way to do this is
to reverse engineer Revelation. We need to take it apart, piece by piece until
we can identify all the pieces that are used to make it up, and then re-assemble
it using our arts & crafts and music approach. That's the only way you are going
to know for certain how all the pieces relate to each other.
To design a plan, the plan should lay out the foundation elements of the big
stuff that holds everything else up, like the trusses and the beams.
Is there a basement or attic to Revelation? These are things to consider.
There should be hand-drawn sketches to describe these spaces and pieces/parts.
And there should be other sketches to describe what the insides of each space
looks like.
Since Revelation is 22 chapters this model will need to be a multi-plex house
suitable for 2 to 4 families, or perhaps a really large house with some large
and some small rooms. Look at various housing floor-plans and choose your
favorite to make this really personal to you. Some rooms will relate to each
other like a kitchen/dinnette/family room, while other rooms will stand-alone
like a ballroom, garage or basement.
The elements and objects are placed together to make up the whole thing one
space at a time. Start with the foundation and the structural elements then add
the floors and walls to seperate the spaces. As each space is identified begin
to dress-it-up by sketching in each space with pieces and parts that make it
unique. Then show how one space relates to other spaces, or not, until you
eventually make up the whole thing.
Viola "Revelation".
This is a great idea for all you people that teach scripture classes. If you
have a group you lead or teach why not make a project out of Revelation or any
of the Bible books and reverse engineer the book and begin constructing a model.
I already know some music from Revelation, but other people might need to go out
and find some. I could really use some more of it. Or better yet our group right
here could pool their resources and start contributing some worthwhile music
that we all could use for this project.
Rev 22:21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God's people. Amen.

BibleMem: Re: Revelation
Noel,
I have memorized Revelation...twice.
Have fun!
God Bless,
Cory Grimm

At one time in my life I wanted to learn the piano, but now I just want to
memorize Revelation. Go figure.

Subject: BibleMem: Memorize Revelation Revisited Again
From: Bible Memory List
And now to add to my many sins regarding scripture memorization, I have this to
say to anyone who will listen:
I went to the Half Price book store 10 weeks ago. After scrutinizing the carnal
sections for about 45 minutes, I stumbled onto the religious section where I got
a surprise. On the end of a book row was a display of around a dozen boxes of
the New American Standard Bible - New Testament read by Steven B Stephens on 12
cassettes for $9.95 each. The copies were somewhat out of date, but really, who
cares since the Bible never goes out of date.
And Stephens if famous for his readings. What an incredible, stirring, affectual
baritone voice. In fact, if anybody knows where to get in touch with Mr.
Stephens, I need to talk with him asap.
The cassettes looked innocent enough, so I walked over, read the boxes and
wavered over whether to risk spending the ten dollars, and eventually bought one
box. I figured that if I didn't like it I could give it as a Christmas gift.
Dumb thought I know.
Having the NT read to me made it like a whole new thing. Actually, I never heard
the scriptures read in my entire life. And boy/girl I was in for an awakening. I
have heard passages read but to have the whole NT book read to me sort of threw
a new light on the subject.
Doesn't the Bible say in it somewhere "So faith comes from hearing, and hearing
by the word of Christ. Romans 10:16. So I started listening to the tapes
regularly in the car on the way to and from work. I've listened to them 3 times
so far, and I must recommend them to you. There is something about hearing the
Word that opens it up in surprising new ways. I don't really know how to explain
it clearly, but I love it more now than before. I mean to say to you that it
sounded like my Dear Father God was talking to me personally, and that he wrote
all this for my benefit (which He did). Who could ask for more.
I'm really writing to tell you that I've listened to Revelation several times
now. What an amazing book. After having heard the book read, patterns and themes
become more evident and more real. The conceptual emphasis became more clearly
defined, and the visual impressions were more alive and meaningful. It's great.
You have to try it.
I am going to use the reading of Revelation to augment and enhance my
reverse-engineer design approach for memorizing Revelation according to the
outline I provided you last week. This is truly a fantastic project for those of
you who lead or teach a bible class and need something to do to keep you busy
and productive.
I would love to have a class of 10 people and take on the
responsibility/blessing of helping each one learn 2 chapters of Revelation.
We would use the approach I described to you last week, and each person would
learn their own two chapters. And when the class was all assembled, they would
represent the entire book of Revelation. Then I would schedule with Pastor to
present a recitation of Revelation on a Sunday where the class could recite from
memory the whole book of Revelation to all those in attendance on that day.
You see, the problem most of us have with memorizing is that we are not doing it
toward any particular end in mind. Memorizing for memorizing sack is boring and
somewhat pointless. It becomes a mind thing. If you assign an objective to
accomplish, that will make a big, big difference. If you do it to edify others
in the family of God it becomes a really great blessing to all. My bet is that
if you learned just one book of the NT you could travel all over the world and
recite it wherever you went, all expenses paid.
So Cory, here is the challenge back to you. You are so far ahead of me on
memorizing Revelation, why not make it your life's ambition to recite this
wonderful book to your Church family. Or to teach other people how to do it.
And when you've done that come over and do it for my Church (LOL).
Blessings to All,
Noel

Dear connie,
What I have done was get a booklet of scriptures together and give them to the
students and ask them to remember them and use some kind of insentive to
motivate them.
God Bless you
