From: Bible Memory List

Hello all,

The discussion list has been quiet for quite a while so I thought that I would
toss in a conversation starter.

It's September.  Many of the members of this list are in North America and the
beginning of September means that the children are going back to school and
Summer is starting to wind down.  Time to establish new patterns and get back to
routines.

No matter where you live we are often so busy that we can get out of the habit
of spending any time memorizing Scripture at all.

I have realized that this is what has happened in my family.  We used to do some
bible memory each morning, but now we don't.  The only thing to do is just to
get started again.

How is everyone doing?

So far this year I've memorized I Thessalonians,  and this past Wednesday
started on II Thessalonians chapter one.  I spend most of my "memory time"
reciting previously memorized passages (58 chapters) so I don't forget them.  I
do much of this review while on a "stepper" at the local exercize gym which
makes the monotonous exercise time literally "fly" and does me some physical
good,  too (hopefully)  in spite of I Timothy 4:8.  Don't give
up.                               Sam from Alaska

It's interesting that John Piper's emphasis this week is scripture memorization
- Desiring God has an article on why, and a short audio clip on how.

Hi,

I didn't realize that all I needed to do is email to this address. My name is
Laura and I am completely new. Can someone tell me how this all works?
Do I just memorize verses on my own or do we do one together? Not sure at all.

Thank you and God Bless you!

I too am a long-term memorizer and find that learning the new 2-3 verses each
week is the easy part. It's the long-term review that takes the time.
I run 40 min every morning and that is my weekly review. The drive to work
takes care of the monthly review.
Sam, do the other people at the gym ever wonder why you are constantly talking
to yourself as you work out?
I'm currently doing Hebrews, started chap 12 today.

i spend at least 30 min each morning on scripture memorization. of course, one
'problem' is that of focusing *ALL* my attention on it. i so often find myself
getting distracted into thinking about something else and not concentrating on
repeating my verses. this usually happens during my 'Learn' mode, where i
repeat a [new] verse 75 times (25 the first day, 20 the second, etc for 5 days)
.. and then i go into Review mode for 45 days (repeating once per day). i find
that 'daydreaming'
doesnt occur as much during review mode. i follow the Ron Hood method using a
small prog on my palm treo (EXTREMELY handy because i have it with me all day
long)

i've memorized about 150 verses in the past 6-8 months using this system.

Hi --

I'm a senior citizen that has been memorizing Scripture for many years altho
I'm afraid without a formal approach.  When I hear of those who manage to
memorize total chapters, I am much impressed. ----  I have concluded, tho, that
often a person much memorize a passage rather than only a verse in order to gain
a better grasp of the message.  Ephesians 2:8-10 would be an example.

Years ago I read the biography of Dawson Trotman, founder of The Navigators,
in which was mentioned the dormitories in which men would call out their
'Goodnights' with a Scripture reference -- somewhat like Sam from Alaska simply
referring to 1 Timothy 4:8 in connection with his memorization at the gym.  (I
had to look it up to get his message.)

Hi, I have just started receiving your list and it is so nice to know there are
so many people who are memorizing God's word. For more than twenty years I have
been applying myself to the development of good memory. I spend a lot of time
memorizing whole chapters and passages but I also use different mnemonic devices
to recall location of scriptures. Several years ago after studying a famous
memory course I created a code system for recalling every chapter (89) in the
Four Gospels. I had trouble remembering where to find the events in the life of
Jesus. Four books telling the same story can be confusing. The system has really
given me a powerful sense of recall for scripture reference.

From: Bible Memory List

Wayne,

That sounds awesome.  Could you perhaps give us a clue as to what it is that you
do?  What your system consists of?  I would like to do something like that very
much.

I kinda play a game with friends and people at Church.  Whenever someone asks,
"Where is that verse that talks about so and so?"  I can usually find it in a
few minutes even if I have never attempted to memorize it.  That is mostly
because I have read through the entire bible a handful of times...Genesis to
Revelation, doing about 20 chapters a day.  Plus, all the other reading and
studying of individual books and special studies.  So I can usually break down a
verse this way:  Old or New Testament(sometimes both if it is a qoute), group of
books within each testament(Example: Gospels, Paul's Writings, other Epistles,
Revelation, Acts), and then knowing the sections of each book and what is
generally discussed.

However, like you mentioned the Gospels are tough because you have 4 books
covering nearly the same thing(Yea, I know the synoptics and John), so something
like what you are talking about would really be a big help.

Thank you in advance,

Eric Kimball

Yes Eric, I can tell you what I do. In my seminars I teach my students an old
system that it is believed goes bact to the ancient greeks. You know those
ancient people had no computers or printing presses so they had to use their
brains. They had many mnemonic devices. The one that I use is one that I learned
from a Law professor that lived in the 1930's. His Name was Dr.
Bruno Furst.

Dr Furst taught his course in several major universities including the Army
Intelligence School in Washington DC.

Anyway the concept is to use letters of the alphabet ( more specifically
Phonic sounds ). You use a letter of the alpabet to represent a number of the
chapter. Then you find a suitable word to represent both the context and the
chapter number. For instance. In the code system no. 1 is always t or d because
they have the same phonic sound. My code for Matthew chapter one is ( tree )
because that chapter contains the geneology of Jesus Life. ( family tree ).

You are welcome to join my free memory tips newletter on my website at
www.bibleinstantrecall.com . I hope it is ok to put my link here.

  God bless Wayne

Subject: BibleMem: Memory
From: Bible Memory List

I began memorizing because of bible quizzing. I quickly found that the best
quizzers memorized all the chapters. We would have to memorize about 1 chapter a
week to keep on schedule. I have now memorized the entire book of Acts,
Galatians, Ephesians, Phillipians, Colossians, Hebrews, and the first
14 chapters of Luke and about a dozen other chapters. The most effective method
we used was a very simple but long process. We always called it the repetition
method. Here's how it worked.

1. Read verse 1,  5 times
2. Read verse 2,  5 times
3. Read verse 3,  5 times
4. Read verse 4,  5 times
5. Read verse 5,  5 times
6. Read verses 1-5 one times
7. Repeat steps 1-5 on the next 5 verses.
8. Read verses 6-10 and then 1-10 each one time 9. Continue this way until you
finish the chapter. The more you read each verse the easier but long it will be.

The idea is repetition and reading.  The point is it's easy because it's just
reading and by the time you get through the chapter (about 1 hour
average) you will almost be able to quote it. The only problem with this method
is time and it's boring but effective. We would do this the first day of the
week and take 1-2 days off. Then we would read it from start to finish about 5
times and begin memorizing it. One we got to the memorizing stage we almost
already had it memorized.

From: Bible Memory List

Hello Again,

I recently wrote of my method of creating code words to recall the chapters of
the four gospels and several responded with questions and comments.

I would like to suggest to those of you who memorize whole chapters or
passages that you add visualization to your efforts. Three things that I teach
in my seminars and also in my memory course are VIA.
Visualization, Imagination, and Association.

I remember when I memorized John chapters 1 and 2 I tried to visualize
everything in the chapters. It helps to engage the creative part of the brain as
well as the logic part. ( left brain right brain).

I am preparing a new newsletter for my subscribers at my website
www.bibleinstantrecall, concerning the effictiveness of using VIA for memory. I
find that ROTE memory is very difficult and usually much is forgotton in a short
time. However, using Mnemonic techinques really work because they use much more
of the God given talents of our wonderful brains.
God bless, Wayne
