In my seminars I teach my students an old system that it is believed goes bact to the ancient greeks. You know those ancient people had no computers or printing presses so they had to use their brains. They had many mnemonic devices. The one that I use is one that I learned from a Law professor that lived in the 1930's. His Name was Dr. Bruno Furst. Dr Furst taught his course in several major universities including the Army Intelligence School in Washington DC. Anyway the concept is to use letters of the alphabet ( more specifically Phonic sounds ). You use a letter of the alpabet to represent a number of the chapter. Then you find a suitable word to represent both the context and the chapter number. For instance. In the code system no. 1 is always t or d because they have the same phonic sound. My code for Matthew chapter one is ( tree ) because that chapter contains the geneology of Jesus Life. ( family tree ). You are welcome to join my free memory tips newletter on my website at www.bibleinstantrecall.com . I hope it is ok to put my link here. I quickly found that the best quizzers memorized all the chapters. We would have to memorize about 1 chapter a week to keep on schedule. I have now memorized the entire book of Acts, Galatians, Ephesians, Phillipians, Colossians, Hebrews, and the first 14 chapters of Luke and about a dozen other chapters. The most effective method we used was a very simple but long process. We always called it the repetition method. Here's how it worked. 1. Read verse 1,  5 times 2. Read verse 2,  5 times 3. Read verse 3,  5 times 4. Read verse 4,  5 times 5. Read verse 5,  5 times 6. Read verses 1-5 one times 7. Repeat steps 1-5 on the next 5 verses. 8. Read verses 6-10 and then 1-10 each one time 9. Continue this way until you finish the chapter. The more you read each verse the easier but long it will be. The idea is repetition and reading.  The point is it's easy because it's just reading and by the time you get through the chapter (about 1 hour average) you will almost be able to quote it. The only problem with this method is time and it's boring but effective. We would do this the first day of the week and take 1-2 days off. Then we would read it from start to finish about 5 times and begin memorizing it. One we got to the memorizing stage we almost already had it memorized.   Zach Sender: wackzingo()gmail.com ========================================================================== To unsubscribe reply saying "UNSUBSCRIBE BIBLEMEM" in the subject =============================================================================== Sent: Friday, September 15, 2006 4:06 PM Subject: BibleMem: Re: Bible Memorization From: Bible Memory List Hello Again, I recently wrote of my method of creating code words to recall the chapters of the four gospels and several responded with questions and comments. I would like to suggest to those of you who memorize whole chapters or passages that you add visualization to your efforts. Three things that I teach in my seminars and also in my memory course are VIA. Visualization, Imagination, and Association. I remember when I memorized John chapters 1 and 2 I tried to visualize everything in the chapters. It helps to engage the creative part of the brain as well as the logic part. ( left brain right brain). I am preparing a new newsletter for my subscribers at my website www.bibleinstantrecall, concerning the effictiveness of using VIA for memory. I find that ROTE memory is very difficult and usually much is forgotton in a short time. However, using Mnemonic techinques really work because they use much more of the God given talents of our wonderful brains.
