Hello. I am new to this and want to improve my memory. I thought this
would be the perfect way to do it. I am a mother of 3 teenagers and work in
a law office. Thank you and God bless you for your wonderful service.

I'm new, too. Do folks on this list share techniques? If so, I have become
interested in the Cloze technique. By this method, systematically delete
(say)
every fifth word. Lightly pencil in the blanks where the missing words stay
missing. When this version is easily read and no blank is penciled in,
delete
every fourth word. Now Your version is riddled with two consecutive blanks.
Then three, then four. Please let me know if this method works (or has
worked)
for anybody. Cheers, Dan.

Hi! I really love your page. I haven't read all of it yet but I've
already been both encouraged and convicted. :)
I'm responding to your question about how to motivate children to
memorize the Bible. At 18 I'm sort of a kid that's being motivated. what
got me started in bible memorization was a Bible Quiz program. Last year
we quized on Romans and James, and as I started studying I just fell in
love with the books as they really came alive and ministered to me and
seemed to apply to so much. So although it sort of motivated me to study
for the wrong reasons (to be good at quizzing) it ended up with me
memorizing for the right reasons (because it draws me closer to my
saviour). I think that the quiz program is really good because we do it
for the Lord. We always pray before our quizes and give God the glory
for our successes. It's done so much for our team in that we talk about
the Lord now. We can almost always quote a verse that pertains to the
conversation, and we've found a lot of humor in the scriptures. :)
Another way of helping kids memorize the Bible is through videos. I
babysit for a family of eight children and they have several parts of
Matthew memorized from watching "The Visual Bible" -videos done word for
word from the NIV version of the Bible. Our team uses them for studying
and they're pretty good. Peter doesn't seem as sanguin as we imagined
him but Oh Well . . .:)
Thank you so much for your page, --
--------- Grace and Peace, Amy Martindale

Hello,
This Cloze method sounds similar to one we used in Sunday School. Write out
the verse on the board, erase the last verse, class reads verse while
(hopefully) remembering the last word. This is repeated with every word
being erased from the end until the students memorize the verse.

Results are great short-term but long term it's not too good.

Grace and peace to all seek to draw closer to Him and His Word,

I know I do.

Recently, God has radically moved in my life. I know he's calling me to
some type of ministry. I need to get into His Word...to study and to
know it. As a result I'll know Him and His will more clearer and be able
to better express our faith in Christ.

I am short on patience and long on procrastination... so the idea of
scripture memorization is a challenging one for me but undoubtedly a
necessary one.

I look forward to this.

Yours, in His Service,

Subject: Welcome Dave & Amy!
From: Drake Mariani

Hearing your youthful enthusiasm is so invigorating to me. Reminds me of
when I was 21 at Arrowhead Springs in CA for the CC for Christ College
retreat (1964).*-

I had trusted Christ in March and my discipler immediately launched me
memorizing verses to grow by. I've done everything I can imagine wrong
since then regarding Scripture memory but one - Quit.

Then I travelled for 35 days from San Bernardino CA to the World's Fair in
NY with a buddy. We took no money (Mark 6), shared Christ with nearly every
ride (hitch-hiking), and shared with about 10 folks a day. What a glorious
faith growing trip it was. Rich (my buddy) still walks with Christ.

That weekend (CCC) was momentous. I met my future wife Gina (now married 33
years!!!), and realized God had called me to full-time ministry and said
YES!

I'm still in full time ministry brother and sister in Christ, Bless His
faithfulness, mercy and grace to Gina and me! Remain strong in that zeal!
You lift us all up!

We desire that each one of you show the same diligence, so as to realize
the full assurance of hope until the end. Heb. 6:11

He who is faithful in a very little thing is faithful also in much; and he
who is unrighteous in a very little thing is unrighteous also in much. Lk
16:10

Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let
us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles
us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing
our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith. Heb 12:1,2

Whatever your hand finds to do, verily, do it with all your might! Eccl 9:10

I was a Bible quiz coach so I really enjoyed what Amy was saying about
Bible Quiz Programs. They are great for children and young people.
Babysitting for eight children? Whew! You must be into the Word!
Five of us ladies went to a Ladies retreat this weekend and even before
we got there, we could take out the Bible and see there's what the Word says
about an issue, or a situation. Of us five we were in age from fifty to
twenty four. Some with babies at home or grandchildren, But God's word works
for all of us.

From: "Lorry Schoenly"

Hi, All! I just discovered this list and it is just what I needed. The
Lord has been gracious to me [again]. I have been diligently memorizing
scripture for about 18 months and it has been very fruitful. I have now
quite an unweldy pile of index cards and am befuddled as to how to keep up
review and go on to new verses. The Website online book on scripture memory
has encouraged me to start memorizing chapters now :-). That will be a new
challenge. I am glad for this list as I hope to gain
encouragment to stay with it.

I am a 42 yo wife and mother of a 20yo son. I work as a nurse educator in a
business setting. I do my scripture memory work while commuting 2 hours
daily. [I know this is a no-no but it works for me - especially the review
part].

Am looking forward to fellowship and encouragement.......

Lorry

Subject: Bible Quizing
From: "Heidi Hollander"

Hello I haven't written for a long time but I am a real fan of Bible
Quizing. It is an awesome program. I am a 36 year old homeschooling mother
of 2. My oldest child (14) has been involved in Bible quizing for 3 years
now. My youngest will be quizing this year too as we tackle Acts. My husband
has coached for the past 2 years & this year looks like I will be coaching
as well. If any of you live in Whatcom county WA you could get involved &
inspired by these super kids & how well they do memorizing scripture. The
program is a national program & adults are always needed to help coach, time
keep, score keep or help in other ways. It is open to kids grades 6-12.
There are many different denominations that do
quizing. We quiz through YEA which is non-denominational Bible
Quizing program.
To find out about quizing in your area check
http://www.vcnet.com/RichardWm/emaildir.htm
On this site is a resource of names and E-Mail addresses of some of those
interested or involved in teen Bible quizzing in different geographical
areas around the US & Canada.
If you do not have internet & would like this list contact me & will send
you a copy. If you do not see your area that doesn't mean there is not
quizing in your area so don't give up. You can contact me & I will try to
help you find a program.

I also enjoyed seeing Amy's post. I've been involved in Bible Quizzing
since 1987 (4 years as a quizzer, and the rest as a coach). It's really an
awesome privlige to listen to a teenager quote through a book (or books) of
the Bible nearly word perfect.
This year our quizzers are working on the book of Acts, which I did as a
quizzer 8 years ago. I'm determined to learn/re-learn it with them this
year, so far I'm through chapter 6.
