Welcome to the Scripture Memory System - Version 2.13 The Scripture memory system is a *free* computer program designed to assist Christians in the memorization of large portions of the Bible. It is my goal to encourage as many Christians as I can to build into their lives the discipline of memorizing scripture. ----------------------------------------------------------------- --- TABLE OF CONTENTS --- SECTION 1:INSTALLATION AND STARTUP SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS INSTALLATION SECTION 2: PROGRAM USAGE INTRODUCTION/QUICK START DETAILED GUIDE TO PROGRAM USAGE ------------------------------------------------------------------ --- INSTALLATION AND STARTUP --- System requirements The scripture memory system will run on any 100% IBM compatible 386 or better which has at least 1 Meg RAM (540 free base RAM) and at least 5 meg free disk space. You must have a SVGA monitor. The system does not use a mouse. It is a DOS program but will work fine in windows 3.1x, 95 or NT. Installation To install the scripture memory system, copy the file you retrieved from the Internet (SMS213.EXE) into an empty directory and run it. When it is finished extracting files type in SMS and press the enter key. The installation will proceed automatically. The program file is called SMS.EXE, so this is the program you would run whenever you want to use the Scripture Memory System. EG... CD\ MD SMS (Make a new directory) CD \SMS (Go to that new directory) (now copy sms213.exe into this directory) SMS213 (run the program you got from the internet) SMS (this is how you start up the program) --- PROGRAM USAGE --- INTRODUCTION/QUICK START The Scripture Memory System is a program which I developed in my spare time over a period of two years in order that I may fulfil one of my own spiritual goals. This goal is to memorize a large portion of the New Testament. This program must be used in conjunction with other exercises to memorize scripture such as verse cards, reciting, listening to tapes, reading, thinking it out in your head, writing out longhand, etc. The preferred method is to memorize the verses written out on verse cards. After you have reviewed it daily (about 100 times) over an eight week period you can consider that you have the passage 'memorized'. At this point you can enter it into this program. The Scripture Memory Review System is a tool for reviewing passages which you have already memorized. It is not a tool for teaching and memorization. I have divided each chapter of the New Testament into a number of passages or paragraphs. The paragraph numbers within a chapter are only an easy method to remember where to find the scripture and to remember which order the paragraphs occur in a chapter. The paragraph divisions were mostly taken from the NIV New Testament. Therefore, I have divided up the New testement up into about 2000 memorizable chunks. You can modify these any way you wish and add passages from the Old testement as well. The program is designed with the assumption that you will start to memorize scripture one paragraph at a time instead of one verse at a time. The reason why I developed a computer program was because I had a problem with review. After a while it was hard to review all the passages that I had learned and still have time to learn new passages. I would end up forgetting the passages I already learned because I did not get back to them enough. This computer program is designed help select which passages you most need to review. A review deck of passages you have learned is maintained by the system. The computer records your progress in detail so that it can decide which passages of scripture you most need to review and then present them to you in that sequence. This is of great importance when you have learned a lot because the amount of time it takes to review these verses would limit the number of new material you can learn. Therefore the system selects which paragraphs must be reviewed based on past performance. This is the first version of the Scripture Memory Review System which has been released to the public. At present, it is shipped with sample passages from the New International Version (NIV). The passages included are used in accordance with the copyright notice included with the NIV and, as such, are used with permission. As noted earlier, I have divided up each chapter of the New testament into a number of paragraphs. The paragraph divisions follow roughly the divisions in the NIV. Although I cannot distribute the entire text of the NIV, I have included all the paragraph divisions. It should not be too much trouble for you to type in the passages of scripture you want to memorize as part of your routine. Instructions as to how to do this are given later in the documentation. I have included 975 verses of the NIV NT with the Scripture Memory System. The program comes with a 1 passage of scripture in the review deck, that is, the file containing the scripture you have already learned. This passage is 1 Corinthians 9:24-27. I can use any feedback you may have and can be reached by Email at memoryhelp@istar.ca. Lets practice using the program ........ When you first start up the program you will see a screen divided into two sides. What you type will appear on the left side. The correct scripture will appear on the right. Start up the program and look at the information at the bottom of the screen. It will tell you which passage of scripture is being tested. Each command option is described in detail later in this documentation. Press [F8] and you will see the passage of scripture on the right side. Press [Esc] when you are done looking at the scripture. Press [F7] if you wish to view an outline of the chapter the current passage is in. Press any key when you are done looking at the outine. Press [Enter] to enter testing mode. (You can do this whenever you see the words 'Press [Enter] to start' near the bottom right corner of the screen. If the left side of the screen is blank you can press [F4] for a hint. Start typing the passage as best you can remember it. Press [F5] when you are done - this will mark your work. Press [SHIFT-F5] (if you wish) to undo the [F5]. Continue typing in the passage. If you like, press [F5] again. When you are done working with the passage, press [F6] to mark your work again and go to the next passage. Press [F9] to exit testing mode When you type in a passage and press [F6], the computer will go onto the next passage only if you had a score of at least 92%. If you had less than this it will ask you to do it again. If you wish you can press [F9] (to exit testing mode) then [F3] to skip the current verse. When you want to add a new verse to the review deck, you may press [F9] (exit testing mode) [F2] (options) then 'N' DETAILED GUIDE TO PROGRAM USAGE. When you start the program, you will see a screen which will look similar to the one below: ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ»ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ» º ºº º º ºº º º ºº º º ºº º º ºº º º ºº º º ºº º º ºº º ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍͼÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍͼ PH Chapter 3 Verses: 12-14 Para: 5 Press [Enter] to start <------- Reviewed 21 times as of 07/24/1996. [F9] Clear the left and right hand sides of the screen and exit testing mode [F10] Exit to DOS [F11] Clear the left hand side of the screen EXAMPLE OF PROCEDURE TO TEST A VERSE. 1) Start typing in the verse. It will appear on the left hand side of the screen. 2) When you are done, you can push [F5] to have the computer mark the verse. You will notice that the computer corrects minor spelling errors and does not require you to type the entire word. The first letter will do. This saves a lot of time because it is easier to type 't l j c' instead of 'The Lord Jesus Christ'. Also the system is very forgiving on punctuation and capitals. A little experimentation is needed to understand how it works. 3) If you like you can push [Shift-F5] to undo the [F5] and continue typing in the paragraph. 4) [F11] clears the left screen to start over. 5) [F9] clears the left and right screen and exits testing mode 6) [F4] presents you with a hint. (The first four words of the paragraph. This works when the left side is blank. 7) [F6] marks the verse and saves the score and goes on with the next verse. Note that [F5] can be pressed multiple times to re mark but [F6] can only be pressed once. Each paragraph you type in must achieve a score of at least 92% for the computer to count it as tested. Any verse you type in will be flagged to be reviewed during the next cycle if your final score [F6] was less than 92 %. OPTIONS MENU This menu is displayed if [F2] is pressed from the screen described first in this document. ---------------------------------------------------- S. Select review sort order E. Enter/Edit paragraphs in master scripture file N. Bring a new paragraph into the review deck. Z. Show a selected chapter outline. R. Reports submenu. I. Data file integrity check C. Clear files. A. Stack review deck ---------------------------------------------------- The following is a description of the commands shown above: S. Select review sort order This allows you to select the order in which the verses are presented to you. The options are: 1) Book and chapter sequence. Passages are presented as thy occur in the Bible. 2) Date last reviewed. Verses not reviewd for a long time presented first 3) By score. Poorly learned verses are presented first 4) Auto sort. Computer decides optimum review order. The computer sorts them based on past performance and date last reviewed. When you are tested on a verse, or you skip over it, it is placed at the back of the review deck. You will periodically have to ask the computer to re-sort the verses for you. This is described below under the option 'Stack review deck'. 5) By Topic. Passages are presented by topic/title A. Stack review deck This function examines all the passages in your review deck and sorts them with the ones most needing review first. If you use the autosort option, you will have to use this function periodically. Note that when the review deck is large, or if you have a slower computer, this function will take a few moments. E. Enter/edit paragraphs in master scripture file This function allows you to work with the text of the passages entered into the master scripture file. When this function is accessed you will see a long list of scripture references. One for each of the passages in the new testament plus whatever ones you may have added from the old testament. You can use the arrow keys to move up and down through the list. Press [INS] to add a new passage reference. You will be asked for the book name, chapter number and paragraph number. You can also type in the text of the passage Press [DEL] to remove a passage reference from the system. Press [Enter] to edit the information associated with the passage. Many of the passages do not yet have the actual bible text entered yet, so you can enter it here. If you want to clear all the text out of the master file start the program up with the '/CLEARTEXT' switch ie sms /cleartext. You will want to do this if the NIV is not your version of choice for memorization of scripture. It will clear out the text, but leave the paragraph definition in the file. N. Bring a new passage into the review deck. This is the way to introduce new passages of scripture into the review deck. You will be shown a list of all the passages of scripture in the master file. Highlight the passage you wish to add to the review deck and press enter. Verify that you wish to add the passage by answering 'Y' to the question on the top left of the screen or 'N' if you do not want to add it. Press [Alt+j] to jump to a specific book. Z. If you have access to an HP laserjet III or better, then you can use the Scripture Memory System to print verse cards. The program prints 10 business card (2 x 3-1/2 inch) cards on a page. You can use the perforated card stock available at stationary stores or plain paper. If you use plain paper, you can get the program to draw a grid on the paper to serve as a guide for cutting. The program allows you to select a group of verses to print. R. Data file integrity check. If you have had a system crash, or the program is just not acting the way it should then pick this item. C. Clear data files Use this with caution. It will clear out all the files containing the review work you have done. It will not clear out the master file where the actual scripture has been typed in, but it will clear out the review deck so that it it is empty. ============================================================================= NOTICE ============================================================================= The Scripture Memory System can be considered freeware for private use.
